Abstract

Analyzing speech production acoustically by using PRAAT software and by taking minimal pairs as research data will help us to examine pronunciation accuracy. The causes of mistake and the factors affecting pronunciation phonetically may be detected through this analysis. This study aimed to measure the accuracy of the pronunciation of English vowel sounds by third-semester students majoring in English Education by comparing them to the standard pronunciation by a native speaker of English and to find factors causing pronunciation problems. This descriptive qualitative research was conducted by following the research phases, that is, (1) data collection, (2) data analysis, and (3) presentation of the result. The results show that, out of four participants, there was only one participant who can distinguish front and back vowels correctly while the other three participants failed to do so at certain vowel sounds. The most common mistake was at long and short vowels ([i:] : [I] and [u:] : [?]). Participants failed to distinguish long and short vowels even though they have been informed that they are different. Furthermore, the problems of pronouncing [æ], [?:], and [?] varied across the participants. The first language interference, attitude toward English, and lack of motivation are indicated to be the factors affecting pronunciation. Keywords: Acoustic phonetics; vowels; pronunciation; PRAAT; formant frequency ABSTRAKMenganalisis produksi suara dengan menggunakan perangkat lunak PRAAT dan dengan mengambil pasangan minimal sebagai data penelitian akan membantu kita untuk memeriksa keakuratan pelafalan. Abstract

Textbooks that are too difficult to read will decrease students’ motivation in learning, while textbooks that are too easy to read will make students less interested in reading them. Therefore, the readability analysis needs to be done so that the textbooks used as learning media are suitable for the students who become the target readers of the books. This study analyzes the texts in Junior High School English textbooks entitled “English in Focus” grades VII, VIII, and IX published by the Center of Book Archieve of the Department of National Education by using cloze procedure. The tests were carried out in SMPN 1 Gunungputri and SMP Sejahtera 2 Cileungsi, involving students in grades VII, VIII, and IX. The texts tested were adapted to their grade levels. The tests were made in the form of 100 words which were then omitted at every 5th word. The readability results of “English in Focus” textbook are that not all texts in the book are suitable for students who use it. If the books are considered as suitable teaching material, these books need some changes because there are 6 texts from the total of 24 texts that are considered too difficult for students. Keywords: textbook assessment, readability, cloze procedure

Abstract

Advertisement is a medium of communication between producers and consumers. An advertisement can be done through various media such as newspapers, magazines, internet, radio and/or television. In advertisement, producers try to create a sign to make a hidden message (mitos) behind.  Advertisement plays significant role in promoting such products because it spreads wider. Literacy of advertisements, through mass media is very essential in helping audiences to better see and understand how messages in the form of text, verbal and nonverbal are displayed through audio visual. The hidden message is created to convey consumers. So that, they can truly understand the message. Television is as one of the media to represent hidden message contained in an advertisement. This study aims to analyze how the signs contained in the texts displayed in the SGM formula advertisement, version "Aku Anak SGM" on television. The methodology used was qualitative with a semiotic analysis approach. Semiotic approach from Barthes will be used by researchers to reveal the signs in these advertisements, by using signifier and signified to get hidden meaning inside. From this analysis can be revealed signs that are relevant to the message that the producer wants to assure the consumers. The existence of advertisements in audio-visual media with other media certainly has a different effect. Television is a complete media, because it can contain messages in the form of audio and visually. Commercial advertisements will have more selling power if they succeed in taking advantage of the advantages possessed by the media.
