Abstract

ABSTRACTThe Indonesian government has recognized the importance of English by including it in the education system for five decades. English has been integrated into secondary school for a long time. English exerts a stronger influence in the modern world and has become an international language. There are also advantages to introducing foreign languages to young students. Therefore, the Indonesian government made a policy to introduce English starting, elementary, middle and high school. At Katapang 1 Junior High School, this policy is optional. That depends on the demands of the school and the community. Schools and communities are responsible for providing teachers, curriculum and facilities. The teacher is one of the most important parts of the educational discourse and teaching and learning process in school. The two research questions formulated are: 1) what problems are faced by teachers in teaching? 2) how they find out the solutions? These questions urged the study to conduct a research at Katapang 1 junior high school. Three English teachers were chosen as respondents.  In qualitative descriptive method, the interview was implemented to collect the data.  As a result the teachers believe that providing good teaching materials can increase positive outcomes for student, the implementation program for teaching English at Katapang 1 Junior High School was very good as a stage of introducing foreign languages before they continued to higher education. Keywords: English teaching, problems, solutions

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know english vocabulary mastery incresed by using picto textual glossesin every meeting in class. The object of this research is 8th grade students in Mutiara 1 junior high school. the main focus in teaching english is to improving students english vocabulary mastery . By improving vocabulary mastery, students will be improving english material easier. The data in this research come from interaction between teacher and students in learning process and it is as students learning activity in the class. the research instruments used test questions.The method of data collecting of the resarch is by using pretest-treatment-postest in the class.  Based on pre test and post test, they showed some improvement on process of get new vocabulary from learning with that method. . The result or the conclusion can be got from the resarch by using picto textual glosses method, data from pre test and post test showed that there were some benefits of picto textual glosses method: 1. Develop of students’ memory ability to increasing vocabulary, 2. Having a fun learning situation. The data showed HI is accepted, because Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) worth 0,000. because the value of  0,000 is smaller; of, <0.05. Keywords:  Vocabulary, Vocabulary mastery, Picto textual glosses, SMP Mutiara I, 8th grade.

Abstract

In general, students' difficulties in understanding of reading is in expressing the meaning and purpose of the reading. The researcher found these problem while conducting research at one of the Islamic Schools in class VIII  at SMP PLUS YPP DARUSSURUR CIMAHI. This study aims to improve the reading ability of students through English-language storybook media. This research used Classroom Action Research design which includes planning, action, observation, reflection or evaluation activities. The study was conducted SMP PLUS YPP DARUSSURUR CIMAHI. The sample of the research is class VIII C that contain of 26 students. The results showed that before treatment was given using the English-language storybook media, after reading comprehension learning using English-language book story at the first cycle the average value of reading comprehension skills of students increased  still in the medium category In cycle 1, the researcher discover that 70% or 18 out of 26 students got the score under KKM, and learning was done on the second cycle was found that 86.20% of the students or 25 out of 26 students got the score more than or equal to 70 related to the Minimum Mastery Criteria of reading comprehension ability of students experienced an increase in average value with a very high category. Keywords:   Reading, Media Story Books, CAR

Abstract

The study is aimed at describing the effectiveness of two stay and two stray in enhancing students’speaking ability. The paper is derived from the research result conducted among 30 students of SMK Budi Bakti Utama Padalarang. Classroom action research design with 2 cycles was applied to encourage students’ speaking skill. Observation checklist, fieldnote and speaking test instruments were used to catch on students’ progress (reflection and evaluation) . Observation was finished to see how clear the strategy was understood and performed by the leraners. Fieldnote aimed at jotting down success and restraint of the strategy usage and tes instrument was managed to assess the grading and scoring development whole the first and second cycles. Reflecting and evaluating were organized at the end of every cycle. Based on observation and fieldnote that the students’participation were getting upgraded in every cycle. Besides, the average score and grade at the end of 2 cycles were getting improved. Mean score of cycle 1 was 59.00, and cycle 2 was 65.00. It could be concluded that two stay and two stray strategy boosted speaking ability for English department students of SMK Budi Bakti Utama Padalarang in academic year 2018/2019.

Abstract

The title of this research is An Analysis of Connotative Meaning in the Proverbs of the Besemah Language (A Semantic Study).  Besemah language is identical of a phonem /e/ from indonesian phonem /a/. The language is used in some areas of south Sumatra especially in Lahat district, South Oku district, Bengkulu Province, and Pagar Alam City. This research was aimed to describe the connotative meaning in the proverbs of the Besemah Language. The object of this research was taken from secondary data which is the dictionary of Besemah Language written by Mahdi (2017). The writer used descriptive qualitative method in this research and some semantic theories both grand and supported theories to analyze the data. The results of this research showed that that the connotative meaning in the proverbs of Besemah Language are having great differences to denotative ones for it depends on individual experience. It means that we will understand the meaning of the proverbs from someone’s experience both through the direct story from the older people (anchestors) and witten book/dictionary. Besides, the connotative meaning of the proverbs in Besemah language mostly corelate the meaning of its proverbs to human life such responsibility, social concern, hard work, patience and love.

Abstract

This research used descriptive qualitative. The writer used tenth-grade Hotel Accomodation’s students of SMK Dwi Putra Sindangkerta as a subject research. In the process of English enrolling, the writer found out the problem on the subject in grammar, especially simple present tense. This skill is a structure that often used in daily conversation. But the students has more difficulties in enrolling simple present tense while it is very important to enroll because it can help them when they meet the foreign guest in the hotel later. We teach simple present tense easier using any method. One of them is the jigsaw method. This method often used more teacher in Indonesia because of this method easy to implement it.  Thus, the writer researches the student to teach simple present tense to implement jigsaw method in other to understand easier by them. The writer applies jigsaw in some steps; they are pre-activity, divided into groups, the group leader selection, group reviewion activity, submitted an assignment, and evaluation. Teaching simple present tense used jigsaw can make a enrolling effectively, and it is improving students motivation to enroll simple present tense. Keywords:  AKP’s Students, Simple Present Tense, Jigsaw Method

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve students' interest in English vocabulary through picture media in TK Nur Assalam. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The participants of this research were 6 students. The results obtained from efforts to the improving students interest in English vocabulary using the picture media involving active learners in the learning process. The role of picture media in learning activities is very important for children, especially in the next education level. Teaching and learning activities in early childhood will quickly develop if parents and teachers intensive to develop it. There are several attempts to create a sense of pleasure in early childhood by using picture media in the learning process. From the result of research indicate that when pre-action take result (15%). In cycle I, it increased to (55%) sufficient criteria. In cycle II, it increased again to (85%) good criteria. So, the increase that occurred from the pre-action to the cycle I that is (40%). The increase from cycle I to cycle II that is (30%). And increase from pre-action to cycle II that is (70%). From the research results obtained, then to the improving students interest in English vocabulary can be improved by using picture media in the learning process.Keywords : Students’ Interest, Vocabulary and Picture Media

Abstract

Vocabulary is very important in learning English. To master four skills in English, we need mastery vocabulary first. So, the researchers use word game in the classroom to make students interest to learn vocabulary. The objective of this research is to know that the word game is effective to improve students’ vocabulary or not, through word game strategy among seventh-grade students of SMP Muslimin Cililin in the academic year of 2018/2019. The method used in this research is quantitative technique and the pre-experimental as a research design. This research was conducted in one class. The population in this research is seventh-grade students of SMP Muslimin Cililin with the total number of the population are 273 students consisting of 7 classes, and the sample is class VII.C that consist of 30 students. The data were collected with the pretest and posttest as an instrument. The researchers conducted the tests before (pre-test) and after (post-test). After that the researchers gave students treatments consists of five meetings. The result showed that  Sig. 0.000 and it was lower than 0.005 so, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that teaching English vocabulary using a word game was effective to improve students’ vocabulary at seventh-grade. Keywords:  Word game, students’ vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

This study is revealed based on the observation on the tenth grade of SMKN 3 Cimahi.  The subjects of this study consisted of 34 students. The purpose of this study was to improve the students’ reading comprehension using Cooperative Integrated and Reading Composition Method. The research design was Classroom Action Research (CAR) which following Arikunto model. It is used to obtain the results of qualitative data using two cycles described through planning, implementing, observation, and reflection on each cycle. The result of the study showed that there was a development on the students’ reading comprehension. It could be seen from the result of the test. The Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) of English lesson was 70 (seventy).  The students mean score in the first test was 50,  in the first post test the mean score was 65, and in the second post test the mean score was 85. In addition there were 3 students (8.8%) who passed KKM on pre test. In the first pretest there were 9 students (29.41%) who passed KKM. In the second pretest there were 31 students (91.18%) who passed KKM. Then, from the result of observation and interview it showed the positive responses from the students. The students can be more active and improve their ideas. The researchers conclude that Cooperative Integrated and Reading Composition method could improve students’ reading comprehension. Keywords:  Reading Comprehension, Cooperative Integrated and Reading Composition, Narrative Text, CAR

Abstract

This research about spoken language which is discussed in discourse analysis. In this research, researcher only focused on turn-taking, especially in the overlap and interruption section. Reseacher used quantitative methods and Guttman scale in processing data obtained from conversation in a movie called Trolls. Researcher choose a movie because in general a movie always contains conversations as well as in that movie. In the movie, researcher only analyzed 2 characters, Princess Poppy and Branch. The purpose of this research was to determine how much turn-taking was used by Princess Poppy and Branch. The results of the analysis showed that the turn-taking by Princess Poppy was 157 while the Branch was 110. The researcher used a table to show the results based on the theory of turn-taking. We can see in table 1 and table 2 that the amount of overlap is more dominant than interruption. The result of the analysis showed frequency overlap Princess Poppy is 82% of the total 128 and interruption frequncy is 18% of the total 29 times. While in tabel 2 it shows that the number of overlap conducted by Branch was 81 with a frequency of 74% and 29 interruption with a frequency of 26%. Keywords:  Discourse Analysis, Interruption, Overlap, Spoken Language, Turn-taking
