Abstract

Millennial lecturers are considered to be proficient in teaching by making use of the technology in their classrooms. Nine millennial lecturers were involved in this study. It was carried out as qualitative research. The data collection technique was open-ended questionnaires then analyzed through thematic analysis. Three research questions were aimed to be examined. The first one was the investigation on the variety of the online applications used in the EFL classrooms; the second one was questioning about the lecturers’ attitudes in getting the benefits of online application, and the third one was observing the lecturers’ attitudes in overcoming the limitations that they found in incorporating the online application in the EFL classroom. The results showed that seventeen types of the online mobile application that were used by the nine millennial lecturers in this study. The millennial lecturers took advantage of the online applications by establishing communication, encouraging students’ self-study, improving the assessment, motivating the students, and improving the teaching instruction. Other result showed that they overcame the limitations of online mobile applications by giving more information and giving assignment to solve the learning management issues and also adjusting the learning when tools issues occur. Keywords:   millennial, lecturer, online application, EFL

Abstract

Learning English during this time globalization is exceptionally critical. People aspire to speak fluent in English. This proves that the presence of English during this time globalization is exceptionally imperative and considering that English is an international language. However, many Indonesians people cannot master vocabularies well, due to lack of understanding when studying in the class. The population of students were 130 within the eighth grade, but researcher using 1 class, there are 35 students within the class for this study. Thereby, the aims of this research is to find the vocabulary improvement of Total Physical Response (TPR). The researcher used qualitative method. Interview and test used as instrument of this research.The result showed that students more understand and truly remember of recent vocabularies when using Total Physical response (TPR) as a way. It can be concluded that students can improved their vocabularies well through TPR. Keywords:  Vocabulary, Total Physical Response

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out how the condition of students’ interest in reading English novels in Faculty of Letters, Muslim Nusantara University Al-Washliyah. As a student majoring in English Literature, reading novels is one of the activities that must be carried out because most of the subjects given are closely related to centrality, one of which is an English-language novel. This research was conducted at the fifth semester students of the Faculty of Literature at Muslim Nusantara University Al-Washliyah. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The instruments used were observation and interviews. Based on the results of the study it was found that the condition of students’ interest of reading English novels in Faculty of Letters, Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah University is very poor. Keywords:  Analysis, Reading, Novel

Abstract

The aims of this research to find deixis and spatial deixis used of song lyrics from King of Dangdut by Rhoma Irama. Descriptive qualitative method used to collect the data. The classified into type of deixis on the own criteria and the findings that the types of deixis like person deixis and spatial deixis used song lyrics of Rhoma irama. From the result, it can be concluded that person deixis and spatial deixis of finding and discussion is found in all song lyrics, personal deixis is the most being founding 81 words that is the word “Aku, Daku, Ku, Kamu, Mu, and Nya, dominate all songs. The position is the spatial deixis 20 words. It can be seen of the result analysis person deixis and spatial deixis can be many found in the six-song lyrics. Keywords:  Person deixis, Spatial deixis, Music

Abstract

Character education is closely related to moral education, which is to shape and train individual abilities continuously for self-improvement towards a better life. Novel is a literary work that can convey the values of character education. The research aims to analyzing the values of character education in the novel 5 cm by Donny dhirgantoro. This research is a qualitative study using a descriptive design method. the data analysis technique by reading the entire data, analyzing the data in more detail and restating the data by described and interpreting the data. The result of this study are the value of character education  contained in the novel “ 5 cm” by Donny Dhirgantoro, namely, religious, hard work, love to read, friendly and communicative, social care,  and love  the homeland.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to analyze the word formation process of slang words in Dat Stick song. Word formation is a change of words from old form to the new form. This research used descriptive method because the researcher described the word formation process of slang word in the song into the word or sentence in detail. This research used a documentation method to collect the data. The researcher used Yule (2010) theory to analyze the slang word. There are 10 types of word formation process which consist of coinage, borrowing, compounding, blending, clipping, and back-formation, conversion, acronym, derivation, and multiple process. Based on these 10 types, the researcher found 5 type of words formation process of 16 slang words. There were 9 from the clipping process, 1 from multiple process, 3 from acronym process, 1 from coinage process and 2 from blending process. Abstract

Communication is the process to share the information to other and understand the purposes between the speaker and hearer. This research contains a discussion identifying the adjacency pair as uttered by speaker which applied in Stork 2016 movie and to finding out the structures of Adjacency Pairs and analyze the conversations. An adjacency pairs is identified by different speakers between the second utterance as related to the first that composed of two turns produced which are placed adjacency. The study applied a descriptive-qualitative method. The conversation was analyzed by the type of adjacency pair (Sacks et al., 1974). It was found that in the movie there are greeting-greeting, question–answer, question–question, suggestion–acceptance, information–question, offer–refusal, question (inserted question - answer)–answer.Keywords: adjacency pairs, conversation analysis, utterance

Abstract

This research aims to find out the use of ellipsis and substitution in Ridwan Kamil’s conversation on interview. There are three types of ellipsis, namely nominal ellipsis, clausal ellipsis and verbal ellipsis. While, substitution has three types, there are nominal substitution, verbal substitution and clausal substitution as cited by Halliday (2014). The method used in this research is quantitative and qualitative method. To collect the data, the writers used several steps. First, downloading the video in internet. Second, transcript the dialogues into the texts. Third, reading the conversation texts. After that, identifying the sentences of Ridwan Kamil’s conversation. Then, counting the sentences which includes to ellipsis and substitution. And the last, describing the reason why the sentences includes ellipsis and substitution. From the data, the writers found seven sentences are defined as an ellipsis and substitution. One sentence as a nominal ellipsis, one sentence as a clausal ellipsis, and verbal ellipsis was not found in the data. Five sentences included as a substitution. Two sentences defined as a nominal substitution, one sentence included as a verbal substitution and two sentences as a clausal substitution.

Abstract

Reading is a process of communication. The process of reading can be stated through direct communication or by writing as well imagination of the reader that can be expressed in daily activities. This article discussed how to apply the Duolingo application using techniques that apply a scientific approach method in teaching reading process. The subject of this research consist of 38 students. The aim of this article was to find out the extent of the students understanding in reading seeing the right words and readings that are in the application. Descriptive qualitative was used in this research. Abstract

English is an international language learned in Indonesia. One of the difficulties of student learning is when learning to read. They tend to read without knowing the meaning of the text they are reading. On this occasion the researcher tried to teach comprehension reading using cooperative learning through jeopardy games to increase students’ interest and ability in learning reading comprehension. In addition, researchers also want to find out what difficulties students face when learning to use jeopardy game through this jeopardy game. This research was conducted on students of class VIII E Semester 1 SMPN 1 Cililin which consists of 36 students. This research was conducted using the Classroom Action Research (CAR). From the results of the pretest and posttest, there were 20 pretest results from 36 students or 56% who succeeded in reaching the minimal completeness criteria. Whereas in the posttest there was an increase to 28 out of 36 students or 78,85% who successfully reached the minimal completeness criteria. Then it can be concluded the use of games in learning increases the ability of students in reading comprehension. However, there are some students who still find it difficult to learn to use this method because their vocabulary mastery is still lacking. Keywords:  Reading Comprehension, Cooperative Learning, Jeopardy Game
