Abstract

In the professional sector, both spoken and written English communications become essential skills to be mastered by vocational students. However, as a non-native speaker, errors in writing are still faced as an obstacle for the students in applying their English capability. This research aimed at identifying the grammatical errors occurring in vocational students’ writing to overcome the error fossilization. The study was conducted in one vocational school in Denpasar, with a total of 45 students purposively selected. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The data were gained by evaluating the students’ writing through an automated writing evaluation program and the type of writing evaluated in the study was application letter. Then, the data were analyzed through three phases; data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. As the result, there were 268 grammatical errors found in the students’ application letters. From their classifications, these errors were categorized into 17 types, with missing an article, misspelling, capitalization, incorrect number agreement, and incorrect preposition as the highest frequency of errors found. Keywords:  Application Letter, Grammatical Errors, Vocational Education

Abstract

in the recount text. Students errors were analyzed using errors analysis. This research used qualitative descriptive method as the research methodology. The data would be presented descriptively and the result was in explanation of words form which would be following by data presented in form of tables. The errors made by female there are 12 errors of omission, 13 errors in addition, 21 errors in misformation and 1 errors in misordering. while the errors are made by male there are 5 errors of omission, 5 errors in addition, 27 errors in misformation and 1 errors in misordering. The instrument in this research was a test item created by students. From this research it can be deduced that the most mistakes made by female and male are errors in the way of misformation because students lack understanding of how to make stories in the writing recount text. Keywords:  Writing, Error Analysis, Recount text.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of clipping and back formation in a novel titled Treasure Island Novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. The subject of this research is to focus on the introduction of the characters involved in this novel. The novel tells from a first-person perspective that Robert Louis Stevenson is Jim, who takes many important decisions. Other characters in this story are Squire Trelawney, Doctor Livesey, an old captain named Billy Bones, Long John Silver who has a cruel character and Black Dog captain, a blind pew and his gang. This research was conducted using descriptive quantitative methods and to process data using the frequency formula from the Guttman theory frequency. The findings of the analysis showed that the clipping frequency was 79,63% and the back formation frequency was 20,37%. The results show that in the Treasure Island Novel clipping the most dominant appeared. In the novel there are 54 sentences included in clipping and back formation, 43 sentences included in clipping and 11 sentences included in back formation. Robert Louis Stevenson in writing the Treasure Island Novel is only small part of the word that uses the process of cutting or reducing words called the process of clipping and back formation. The word that appears most in clipping is Bill (Billy Bone) and in back formation is mate (soulmate). Keywords:  Back Formation, Clipping, Morphosyntax, Word Formation

Abstract

The purpose of this study to analyze type of illocutionary speech acts that used by Hanan Attaki and identifying speech acts utterance by Hanan Attaki on Youtube. The method used in this study is the qualitative descriptive method because this is done only based on the fact and the writer describes the result in from words and the explanation of the result. Data collection method that used is scrutinized method and make a script, is scrutinize use of language by Ustadz Hanan Attaki, then the data is note and classified based on type of illocutionary. In this result the writer analyze all type of illucationary speech act used by Ustadz Hanan Attaki on Video Ust. Hanan Attaki Youtube Channel. The result of this study found 65 clauses that contain the type of illocutionary speech acts, there are representatives (37), directives (22), declarative (5) and commissive (1) each type of the speech acts are delivering different meaning and representative is the most widely used by Ustadz Hanan Attaki. Abstract

The way an instructor utilizes questions constitutes an essential issue to ponder. By understanding them, the interaction between the instructor and students and the students’ performance of certain tasks can be construed. However, it may be challenging when it comes up to online learning for the situation is different from the situation they commonly experience via a face to face learning. Thus, this study aimed to reveal the questions deployed by the instructor, and the students perceived it during the online learning over six sessions using a WhatsApp group. It was conducted in one university in Bandung city. Twenty-three graduate students and an instructor were involved. A mixed-method with an embedded design was utilized and the data were garnered through online archives and interviews. Through the online archives, the types of questions used were investigated. Meanwhile, some systematic coding procedures were employed to analyze the students' voices of the questions used. The findings revealed that convergent questions were the most frequent type of questions found followed by divergent questions, procedural questions, and rhetorical questions consecutively. Besides, most of the students perceive positive views related to the questions used. However, some challenges still emerged during the online class.

Abstract

Gamification is gaining momentum together with technology-infused training as an advancement to inspire and engage students in their learning process. The correlation between game play and increased motivation and interaction is shown by strong evidence. More and more games of learning appear, offering a promise to help learning a language. This research was designed in descriptive qualitative research; data was collected by short questions to be answered on the application of Kahoot online application in English classrooms. The aim in this research to analyze motivation of the students and to enrich the dynamics of the lessons introducing Kahoot in the English classroom in order to achieve improve the tasks related to vocabulary, aimed at defining vocabulary. The research design was qualitative research concerning phenomenological studies with a sample of 30 students of Junior High School of SMP Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. It used an open-ended questionnaire to collect the data of the students' perceptions. Data analysis of the questionnaires was analyzed qualitatively by interview. With the media Kahoot can improve student learning achievement as evidence that the results of learning English experience a significant increase in value. It is very helpful for students in addition to understanding English subject matter.Keywords:  education, kahoot, learning, motivation, smartphone

Abstract

The objective of the study is to provide the students treatment and make the students easy in learning process of writing descriptive text, therefore to improve the students writing skills in English by using PWIM strategy. The participants are the 7th grade students of Junior High School at Cimahi in academic year 2019/2020 which consist of 32 students. The study using CAR with two cycles to observe the activities and responses of students in classroom. Result of the study could be seen from the improvement score from pretest to posttest 2 with a minimum score of 75 and maximum score of 85 in posttest 2. Keywords:  Writing, Descriptive Text, PWIM Strategy, CAR

Abstract

This study aimed to identify kinds of online assessment implemented by English teachers and to analyze the students‘perception of using online assessment in Tenth Grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta in Academic Year 2019/2020. The researcher collected the data by questionnaire, interview, and documentation. The researcher used technique of analyzing the data by Miles and Huberman which have three phases. They are Data Reduction, Data Display, and Drawing Conclusion. For the trustworthiness of the data, the researcher used Methodological Triangulation. The result indicated that all English teachers have implemented variative online assessment through Google Form, Google Classroom, Edmodo, Quizzes, and Instagram. There are advantages, disadvantages, challenges face by the teacher applied online assessment such as designing the right assessment, controling the student in online, and got bad internet connection. Meanwhile, the students have positive and negative perception toward the implementation of online assessment. The positive perception showed that the student enjoyed the online assessment, obtained feedback immediately, flexible, time saving, effective, and more confident in doing online assessment. However, the student also had negative perception such as need internet data, less motivation, unfocussed, cheating, and need a longer time. Keywords:  Online Assessment, Kinds of Online Assessment, Students’ Perception

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the activities that occur during the teaching process of writing Recount Texts using the Discovery Learning method and to identify the benefits obtained by students from writing the Recount Text using the Discovery Learning method in the 2013 curriculum there is one learning model called Discovery Learning. Discovery Learning can help students to learn better because students can think critically and creative. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The research respondents were English teachers and the tenth grade students of Ngamprah High School. Data obtained from observations and interviews. The results of the study revealed that the results of this study were positive. Students who are taught by using the method of Discovery Learning play an active role in the teaching and learning process. The composition of their writing also shows good results in terms of content, organization, Grammar,vocabulary, and mechanics. Therefore, it is recommended to apply this learning model to teach writing Recount Texts.Keywords:  Discovery Learning, Writing Skills, Recount Text

Abstract

This research aims to describe the teacher’s preparation and explain how the teacher utilized the media in teaching English in one of the elementary schools in Cimahi. This method used a descriptive qualitative. This research was conducted with two instruments. There is observation in the classroom and an interview with the teacher. The research subject was VIB grade students in one school in Cimahi. The result of this research that the teacher did three kinds of preparation, prepares a projector, understands the material for delivery to students and prepares the PowerPoint that uses in the classroom. In utilizing the media, the teacher uses a projector and PowerPoint as a media in teaching English. Keywords:  Visual Media, PowerPoint, Young Learners
