Abstract

Individuals use language as a means of communication everywhere and at all times. In today's world, figurative language is often encountered in everyday life, such as in song lyrics. Figurative language is a way of describing something without saying it directly. This research aims to investigate the figurative languages found in the lyrics of the song "Grenade" by analyzing their context and attempting to decipher their meaning. The data tool is song lyrics found on the internet, and the research approach is descriptive qualitative analysis. The results revealed that this album employs figurative language such as metaphor, hyperbole, and repetition. Furthermore, the most figurative words used in the lyrics is hyperbole. Each figurative language's contextual sense is often clarified in relation to the lyric's situation. Keywords: Figurative Language, Song lyrics, Contextual Meaning

Abstract

AbstractVocabulary is one of the essential elements of English Language Teaching. It is therefore important to ensure that the students are able to obtain sizable vocabulary knowledge during their academic performance. Extensive reading strategy played a major role in that process. Two research problems were proposed in this study. The first is to know the effectiveness of extensive reading strategy in vocabulary class. The second is to discover the significant improvement of English Language Education students’ vocabulary knowledge through extensive reading strategy. In this qualitative study, three research instruments: observation, classroom survey, and focus group discussion were employed. Qualitative content analysis was implemented to draw meanings out of the data gathered. Five major findings were as follows: (a) ELESP students viewed vocabulary as an important element in English language mastery (b) Loved reading extensively (c) Had limited time to read (d) Lose their reading motivation easily (e) Suggested regular checking of vocabulary books.Keywords: vocabulary, extensive reading strategy, qualitative content analysis

Abstract

In a learning process of learning English, teaching materials are needed to support the learning process such as textbooks. Therefore, this research analysed English speaking material in “Bahasa Inggris” English textbook for twelfth grade of Senior High School Published by Kemendikbud 2018. The research problem of the study were: (1) What types of speaking material are there in “Bahasa Inggris” English textbook?, and (2) How is the content of the material on speaking English textbook for twelfth grades published by Indonesian government?. Therefore, the purposes of this study were: (1) To describe types of speaking material in “Bahasa Inggris” English Textbook., and (2) To identify the contain of material of speaking skills found in English textbook for twelfth graders published by Indonesian government. In carrying out this research, researcher used a qualitative approach with content analysis method. Data collected by carrying out evaluation checklist, interview, and documentation. The main research findings were: (1) The speaking materials contained in “Bahasa Inggris” English textbooks for twelfth graders published by Indonesian governmentcontains material in the form of dialogue, and (2) The speaking material in the book can help students based on the teacher's perspective and evaluation checklists. Keywords:  Speaking Material, Textbook Analysis, English Textbook

Abstract

The evolution of pictures has brought changes to communication in the current time. From smoke signal to smartphones as a medium of communication, has enabled people to keep in touch with one another easier. The development of technology produces internet which is essential to every humankind around the world. With the help of internet, people could now upload pictures, especially Selfies, and post them on social media for others to view and respond to them. Through this medium of sharing over the social media, Selfies are used to deliver messages to facilitate communication better by saying their mind out on what they see and think. Hence, this study was carried out to examine the effects of Selfie as prompt to generate ideas for narrative writing among undergraduates in a local higher education in Malaysia. The findings had shown significant improvement in undergraduates’ writing in term of ideas coherency and text length. It was observed that undergraduates were able to narrate their experiences and stories related to their own Selfies as compared to non-pictorial writing. As a whole, the use of Selfie as prompt had improved undergraduates’ writing ability as well as their level of confidence in language expression.

Abstract

This study aims to identify types of deixis. research focus on speeches conducted by Anies Baswedan in condolences for acts of terrorism that occurred in the city of Christchurch, new zealand, which was uploaded on the Jakarta provincial government on youtube channel. The researchers used qualitative descriptive methods. It starts with searching and downloading videos on Youtube, recording speeches delivered in the video, and analyzing what types of deixis are used. in this study obtained a total of 25 data and all types of deixis used by Anies baswedan in his speech, namely person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. Keywords:  Deixis, Anies Baswedan’s Speech.

Abstract

The tittle of this research is An AnalysisDeixis in “Nom nom’s Entourage” Manuscript on We are Bare BearsMovie Seaso. Deixis is one of branch from pragmatics that shown relation between language and context in that language it self. The aim from this research is to know and identify the type of deixis in Nom nom’s Entourage movie season. That have some steps to collecting the data firs is watching the We Are Bare Bears movie season with Nom nom’s Entourage title. Second is reading the script of that movie. Third, selecting and collect the data. Fourth is classifying the type of deixis and the last is produce the conclution. This research using descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The result from this research is that have five type of deixis there are person deixis, time deixis, place deixis, social deixis and discourse deixis. Person deixis divided to three part there are firs person as speaker, second person as hearer and third person as other, with 195 word in that movie. Time deixis shows a certain period of time, consist of 10 word in that movie. Place deixis describe the location in a conversation, consist of  26 word in that movie. Social deixis is show how the social differences when talking with other, consist of 18 word in that movie. Discourse deixis is show deitic expressions which point to prior succeeding parts of the discourse with 4 word in that movie. Keywords:  Pragmatics, Deixis, Movie

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe the implementation of teams game tournament in learning English at SMP Pasundan 1 Cimahi. The research using descriptive qualitative method, and took 33 samples from seventh grade students. The writer collected data by interviewing and spreading questionnaires asked the students motivation which have 10 items adopted from Muhlisin, (2018). Percentage and descriptive explanations are applied in data processing. Based on this study, the writer found that; 1. The students became more active in learning activities, 2. The student’s teamwork and courage were increasing while discussing group time, and 3. The materials were easier to be accepted and understood by students. Those results indicated that the implementation of this method has enhanced the interest of students in learning English. From the questionnaires and interviews most of  the students choose to agree statements too. So, it showed us that the implementation of cooperative learning type teams game tournament method was successfully improving student’s motivation in learning English.Keywords:  Cooperative Learning, Teams Game Tournament, Students Motivation

Abstract

The objectives of this study are; 1) to determine the ability in implementing online learning and multimedia use, 2) to determine the difficulties in online learning and difficulties in providing multimedia-based learning. 3. to assist participant in making multimedia-based learning media with the Kinemaster application. Researchers use descriptive qualitative methods. Respondents in this study were prospective students participating of English Education study program. 62.5% of respondents when teaching always use multimedia, 25% sometimes use multimedia in teaching, and 12.5% rarely use multimedia. Regarding difficulties in class management as much as 50%, in time management 25% and difficulties in operating software 25%. Other obstacles experienced are; 42.9% of the obstacles are networking, then 42.9% of the software application systems are not easy to operate and electrical energy sources 14.3%. The number of respondent 100% not only know but have also used the kinemaster application in making multimedia-based learning media by 62.5%, and 37.5% who never used the kinemaster, 62.5% of respondents said it was easy and 37.5% still had difficulties,. kinemaster really helps respondents in learning as much as 50% stated that they were helped, 12.5% did not feel helped, and 37.5% stated that it was normal. Keywords:  Kinemaster, Multimedia, English Online Learning

Abstract

Writing is an important skill for students because it helps them in their life but sometime they have difficulties when they start to writing. Therefore, the teacher must be able to find and use the right strategies for teaching writing activity especially choosing teaching media. One of the media that can be used in teaching writing is comic strips. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is an influence of using comic strips media to improve writing skill in the tenth grade students. This research employed pre-experimental design and used test questions as the instrument. The sample was the tenth grade students in one of SMKN in Cianjur, consisting of 36 students. The research compared the mean of the pre-test and post-test to identify the influence of comic strips media in improving writing skill.

Abstract

Reading is considered an important aspect for students because of its valuable benefits in developing knowledge. In English, one of the skills that must be mastered is reading skill. However, to comprehend the contents of the text well there were still many students who find it difficult, it is caused by inappropriate technique used by teachers in teaching English. Therefore, to improve their reading comprehension proper technique must be applied. The aim of this reseach is to investigate whether there was an improvement by using jigsaw technique in students' reading comprehension in eighth grade students at SMPN 2 Pasirkuda. The researcher used 33 students as a sample of this research using a pre-experimental design. The research instrument used a test in the pre-test and post-test. The result of this research presents that using jigsaw technique had the positive effect in improving reading comprehension. We can see the results from paired samples t-test that there is a significant difference for the pre- test score (M = 47.45, SD = 7,55) and post-test (M = 68.85, SD = 6,38), t (32) = -19,40, p <0.05. It concluded that the jigsaw technique improve the students’ reading comprehension. Keywords: Jigsaw Technique, Reading Comprehension
