Students who tend to only follow directions from the teacher cause learning to be meaningless. This meaningless learning causes students to be unable to master mathematical concepts and principles, so that when given a problem students are unable to work on the problem independently. Therefore, this study aims to describe the mathematical understanding ability of MTs students on algebraic material using descriptive qualitative. The research subjects used were 6 students who were taken using purposive sampling technique. The test instrument is in the form of a description of algebraic material consisting of 7 questions that are adjusted to the indicators of mathematical understanding ability according to the Ministry of National Education and non-test in the form of interviews. The data analysis technique used in this research is data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the student's instrument will be analyzed based on indicators of mathematical understanding ability by converting the score into percentage form. The results obtained from 7 indicators of mathematical understanding, 5 of which are already above 50% and 2 others are still below 50%. These results indicate that students' mathematical understanding abilities are still not optimal because students still have difficulty applying their understanding in solving algebraic questions, especially on indicators of building necessary conditions and applying concepts or algorithms in problem solving.

Online learning during the pandemic makes students less understanding of mathematical concepts so that student learning outcomes decrease when learning is again carried out face-to-face. Therefore we need an approach that is able to make students understand mathematical concepts through meaningful experiences without depending on the teacher. Then the problem-based learning approach was chosen and carried out by means of group discussions. The research method used in this study is Classroom Action Research conducted through three cycles whose cycle has 1 meeting. The subject of this research are 10 students of class XI TKRO 1 of SMK Karya Bhakti Pusdikpal Cimahi. The data was collected by using a test and then analyzed using percentage techniques with a limit of 85% reached the lower achievement criteria which is 75. The results showed that mathematics learning, could improve student mathematics learning outcome. The average value of the final test given in each cycle has increased. The average value of the final test of mathematics learning outcomes for student in cycle I was 75,6; in cycle II was 82, and in cycle III was 85,3. So it can be concluded that the use of the Problem-Based Learning approach can improve student learning outcomes.

Social arithmetic is material that is directly related to the application of mathematics in everyday life. But the facts show that students find it difficult to learn the material. This study was conducted with the aim of describing the identification of the difficulties of junior high school students in working on social arithmetic problems. In this research using a qualitative descriptive method. The data taken using the technique of giving test questions in the form of descriptions to students with indicators that have been set as instruments consisting of 6 questions, then further analyzing student answers. Data analysis was carried out, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The analysis aims to determine the students' difficulties in social arithmetic lessons. The object of research is 25 students in one of the Cililin State Junior High Schools. The instrument is a test question regarding social arithmetic with different levels of questions. The results showed that there were 3 types of difficulties, namely: (1) difficulties in language aspects, such as students having difficulty understanding and translating questions and even difficulty in retelling in their own language; (2) Difficulty in the prerequisite aspects, the sequence from the language aspect makes students unable to copy back what is known and what is asked, students also understand a little about the concept of determining formulas; (3) difficulties in applied aspects, for example, students have difficulty carrying out counting methods, making it difficult for students to determine the common thread from these answers. This difficulty is caused because students do not fully understand the social arithmetic material.
