Abstract

This study discusses the designer and manufacture of rattan benches with the application of traditional Kina motifs originating from Bandung Regency. The main focus of the study is to produce a real product in the form of a rattan bench prototype that integrates Kina motifs aesthetically and functionally, so that it not only preserves local cultural heritage but also presents added value in contemporary furniture design. This study uses a design/creation method based on design, with stages of visual exploration of Kina motifs, development of rattan bench design concepts, prototype creation, and evaluation of results through expert and stakeholder interviews to assess the feasibility of the design visually, ergonomically, and culturally. The results of the study in the form of a rattan bench prototype show the success of the integration of Kina motifs, with embossed details on the seat cover and pattern stylization on the rattan frame, which are positively appreciated by local craftsmen and the community. The benefits of this design result include the preservation of traditional motifs in the form of real products, increasing the aesthetic value of local furniture, and developing product potential to support the culture-based creative industry.

Abstract

The limited space in modern residences, especially in urban areas with high population density, demands innovative solutions in the design of efficient and multifunctional furniture. This article aims to design a foldable coffee table that meets both aesthetic and functional needs while optimizing space usage in limited dwellings. The design process begins with data collection through user needs surveys, identification of common challenges in arranging small spaces, and ergonomic analysis. Material selection is focused on lightweight, durable, and environmentally friendly materials, such as high-quality, long-lasting teak wood and corrosion-resistant metal. The folding mechanism used employs modern hinges that are easy to operate and highly durable to ensure the safety and comfort of users. Additionally, a minimalist design with simple aesthetic elements was chosen so that the table can blend with various interior styles. Observations indicate that this table effectively saves space when folded, without compromising its stability and durability when used as a coffee table. The design methodology includes identifying user needs, functional analysis, and exploration of practical folding mechanisms and materials. This article contributes to creating innovative furniture solutions that are relevant to the needs of urban communities. By emphasizing ergonomic, flexible, and environmentally friendly design principles this foldable coffee table is expected to become an ideal alternative for residents   of houses or apartments with limited space, while supporting a practical and efficient modern lifestyle.

Abstract

There is growing public concern that using Artificial Intelligence (AI) may threaten human aesthetic values and creative expression, potentially undermining the preservation of local cultural heritage. However, some argue that AI integration in the arts could enhance artistic inclusivity by expanding accessibility and fostering more interactive and engaging artistic experiences. Thus, it is crucial to explore AI's application in art with a nuanced understanding and a balanced approach to safeguard the essence of inclusivity. This study examines the impact of AI integration in artistic works, particularly its implications for artistic inclusivity. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with five art professionals recruited via snowball sampling. Thematic analysis was conducted using artistic inclusivity as the primary interpretive lens. The findings reveal a consensus among participants that AI's presence in art is inevitable. However, they contend that AI will not fundamentally alter the nature of art or replace human creativity. Instead, AI is perceived as a potential tool to strengthen inclusivity, particularly by enhancing accessibility. This study contributes valuable insights into AI's impact on artistic inclusivity and offers guidance for artists to leverage technology responsibly, creating inclusive, sustainable, and culturally rich artworks. The findings also prompt further discussion on the ethics of AI in art and the need to balance technological innovation with the preservation of cultural identity.

Abstract

This study reviews the in-depth deconstruction of the Pinjaik Patah Embroidery Gallery logo to identify and interpret the semiotic meaning contained therein. As a visual icon, this logo is considered a representation of the values and cultural identity inherent in the handicraft business from Nagari Panampuang, West Sumatra. This study adopts a qualitative paradigm and uses Peirce's semiotic analysis. Through this approach, the study aims to analyze and interpret the meaning and signs contained in the logo design. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation and literature study. The results of this study found that the analyzed logo consists of two main elements, namely a logogram in the form of a broken needle stylization that functions as the main icon by directing to the source of life and unifying and a logotype that adopts organic motifs typical of Minangkabau so as to give a soft and natural impression. Through a semiotic approach, this study seeks to provide theoretical contributions to visual communication design practitioners in systematically identifying the various semiotic elements used in certain design works.

Abstract

The characters in the animated film Nine (2009) are one example of an animated film that highlights the depiction of characters based on shape, posture, and attributes as their visual selling point. According to Mars Caroline in her book Animated Character Design, the behavior and traits of a character can be seen based on the body shape and attributes it wears. This study aims to determine the influence of form and attributes as a medium to express the depiction of traits in animated character design. The research method uses descriptive qualitative data by collecting primary data, namely observation and documentation in the film Nine (2009). The secondary data by reading similar research on the topic of character design. This study took three main figures as samples, namely Number One, Number Eight, and Number Nine, as a limitation of the problem to be studied. The data that has been obtained is then analyzed by considering the elements of character design. The results of the study showed that posture and attributes had a significant effect on the depiction of character traits and behaviors. The more complete and distinctive the attributes worn, the easier it is for the character to be recognized both in terms of character and behavior. Meanwhile, posture, especially through body movements and poses, can provide an idea to know the behavior of the character visually. This research is expected to contribute as a reference both in the process of designing animated character designs and as a reference for research.

Abstract

This study examines the aesthetic reconstruction of digital calligraphy as a form of adaptation by local artists to the advancement of digital technology and the dynamics of contemporary art. Digital calligraphy is not merely understood as a technical transformation of traditional practices, but as a new creative domain that facilitates the exploration of form, color, composition, and integration with modern visual media. The primary objective of this research is to identify how local artists reinterpret the aesthetic values of calligraphy through digital mediums, along with the challenges and strategies they employ in the process. The study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. Data were collected through literature reviews, visual observation of digital calligraphy works, and in-depth interviews with two artists representing distinct artistic backgrounds. The findings reveal that digitalization provides expanded opportunities for visual expression, technical efficiency, and wider dissemination of artwork. However, it also presents issues related to authenticity, the perception of artistic value, and the difficulty of preserving the essence of traditional calligraphy. The study concludes that digital calligraphy is not merely a substitute for conventional techniques, but a medium that broadens aesthetic horizons through an interdisciplinary approach that combines technology, visual culture, and traditional values. Therefore, digital calligraphy artists are required to possess not only technical proficiency but also philosophical understanding to ensure their works remain authentic and meaningful in a modern context.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze local pandan woven products in West Sumatra, especially Sijunjung Regency, into a more modern product innovation form through strategic design. Pandanus weaving has a long history and strong cultural value but faces challenges such as declining demand due to shifting market preferences and competition from manufactured goods. Using a qualitative and explorative approach through the "Design Strategy" method, this research focuses on integrating natural and synthetic materials by combining pandanus weaving with synthetic leather to create functional, aesthetic, and commercial products. The study explores weaving techniques fused with synthetic materials, resulting in unique colors and characteristics from both the pandanus weave and the synthetic leather. This reveals the potential of pandanus weaving to be applied in product prototypes that cater to market preferences while preserving regional cultural identity. The innovation is expected to not only enhance the competitiveness of pandanus weaving products in the modern market but also introduce design novelty in functional products through material integration. Moreover, it supports the sustainability of the local creative economy and reintroduces the uniqueness of this cultural heritage to a wider audience. The research method involves observation, surveys, and studies of pandanus weaving artisans’ practices, followed by exploration of weaving pattern integration as the main material. The application and assembly technique of synthetic leather to the pandanus weave patterns in various functional product types lead to product innovation.
