Abstract

Critical thinking is a highly valued learning outcome in all educational levels. This study explores students ability to evaluate arguments as one manifestation of critical thinking. Using a newly developed instument (the Argument Evaluation Test), we describe high school graduates’ (N = 2201) ability to distinguish between sound and fallacious arguments, without explicit instruction. The results indicate that about half of the participants were able to spontaneously evaluate arguments and identify logical fallacies. This is significant considering that argumentation and logical fallacies are not part of the school curriculum in Indonesia. Thus, the ability to identify at least some types of logical fallacies could be obtained through informal learning and therefore the knowledge underlying this ability is likely to be implicit. Another finding was that the ability to evaluate arguments seem to vary depending on the type of fallacy, with ad hominem arguments easier to be identified as fallacious compared to ad populum arguments, as well as demographic variables such as gender and ethnicity.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to empirically test the relationship between emotional intelligence, work engagement, and organizational commitment Indonesian Army personnels. A quantitative research method was used, utilizing scales of organizational commitment, emotional intelligence, and work engagement. Indonesian Army personnels of KOREM XX, KODIM, YY, and KODIM ZZ were the population of this study. Data analysis using regression techniques revealed an R value of .482 (p < .001). This showed a significant relationship between emotional intelligence, work engagement, and organizational commitment. In addition, partial correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between work engagement and organizational commitment (r = .447 and p < .001), but there was no significant relationship between emotional intelligence and organizational commitment (r = .129 and p > .05). Effective contribution of work engagement on organizational commitment of the Indonesian Army personnel was 23.2%.

Abstract

This study aim to examine the relationships between job embeddedness, person-organization fit (POF), and turnover intention. Job embeddedness is a variety of conditions that make individuals feel attached to their job and organization. Person-organization fit is the compatibility between the characteristics of individuals and their organizations. Turnover intention is an employee’s conscious desire to leave his or her organization. This study was conducted among employees of a retail company in West Jakarta. The number of participants in this study was 177 employees. Data analysis was performed using Spearman correlation. Results show that job embeddedness was related to person-organization fit and turnover intention. However, there was no relationship between turnover intention and person-organization fit.

Abstract

Female relationship violence (RV) victims often do not get help and are seen as in a negative light, even being subjected to victim-blaming, because they are triggered by sexism. Sexism, as a traditional gender perspective, puts more emphasis on the position of women; and now has an ambivalent quality, with the emergence of two forms of sexism, namely: hostile sexism (the viewing of women in a negative way, and as incompetent) and benevolent sexism (women are being considered to be weak, and so they need protection). This study aims to determine the effects of ambivalent sexism, and attributions of blame to the victims, for the perception of RV victims. The survey, conducted with on 299 students, from four high-schools in Sidoarjo, East Java, for measuring ambivalent sexism, with the Extended Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (EASI), and; the Domestic Violence Blame Scale (DVBS) to measure the attribution of blame to the victim. The perception of RV victims was measured by using a vignette which contained photos and stories about a female RV victim. Regression analysis found that benevolent sexism had a positive effect on the perceptions of victims (β = 0.19, p < .05). Individuals demonstrating high benevolent sexism will tend to view KDP RV victims as traditional women.

Abstract

The nature of social change occurs at the center of human consciousness and based on a commitment, it cannot be reversed, rejected, or canceled (Vago, 2004). Therefore, there are economic and political orders as a result of conflict of ideologies within society. Historically, global social change is caused by the Industrial Revolution and Ideology and Gender Revolution. The invention of telegraph was the beginning of globalization, identified by the 4T revolution (Telecommunications, Transport, Tourism and Transparency). The revolution in agriculture, mining, manufacturing and industry results changes in lifestyle and exploitation of natural resources that can cause climate change. The second source of social change is the revolution of ideology and gender. When colonialism, slavery and deprivation of human rights occurred, the movement to struggle for human rights as its counterculture appeared, resulting in 1980 the pro-human right movement products. The sexual revolution in the 1960s in the USA demanded for equal rights between men and women. The 1975 UNFPA population convention held in Cairo have made an agreement to restrict population growth using contraception, resulting later-on the concept that sex is no longer for reproductive purpose but for recreation. People’s lifestyle has changed since then.

Abstract

A preliminary study of students of a psychology faculty, revealed the fact that there are some students with low life satisfaction and negative affect during their college life. Low subjective well-being (SWB) was associated with decreased productivity and cognitive flexibility, which are important elements for studying. Previous researchers found a significant correlation between gratitude and SWB. The aim of this study is to enhance student SWB through an intervention of gratitude letter. We use two stages in this study: first a descriptive method (N = 282) to have an accurate description of the level of their SWB. Then, we select 60 students with the lowest SWB to participate in the next stage, a quasi-experimental method with multiple group design, consisting of two experimental group and one control group. Measurements were conducted with modified SLS, SPANE, and GQ6. Data a-nalysis revealed significant differences in gratitude and positive affect level that are differrent in each group. Significant improvement in gratitude and subjective well-being based on the pre-test, post-test 1, post-test 2 were only found in the group that writes and expresses the gratitude letter.

Abstract

The transition from senior high-school to university is an important phase for new tertiary students to which they must adapt, particularly in academic matters. This study was conducted with new students (n = 95), commencing studies in 2017 at the Faculty of Psychology, Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung, West Java, to obtain a picture of their abilities in self-regulated learning. The Bachelor of Psychology course, which is a Science subject, involves a great deal of social science, and so requires a unique study strategy, to enable new students to adapt in the academic field. This study utilized the Motivation Strategy Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) measurement instrument scale, supplemented by a survey questionnaire regarding academic results. Some 70% of new tertiary students in the Bachelor of Psychology (BPsych) course organized their goals and regulated their motivation internally (internal goal motivation). The study strategy most used to regulate their cognition was elaboration, whilst there still tended to be a few who capitalized upon peer learning and critical thinking strategies in their learning processes (40%). The aspects of effort regulation and help seeking were found to be able somewhat to predict their Student Achievement Index (Indeks Prestasi Siswa–IPS). For this reason, the learning environment needs to be conditioned so that these two aspects are facilitated optimally.

Abstract

A teacher with self-efficacy is more able to accomplish any task from the management so that he is engaged to his work, and a teacher who regards his work as a calling has the proper motivation to work better. The aim of this study was to find whether there is a correlation between teacher’s self-efficacy and work engangement and whether there is a correlation between the meaning of work as a calling and work engagement of private high school teachers in Surabaya. The subjects (N = 87) were teachers from three private schools in Surabaya. The data was collected through close-ended statements scales with five options of answer that were later analyzed through a nonparametric correlation test with SPSS 19.00. The result showed a correlation between teachers’ self-efficacy and work engagement (r = .08; p < .05) and a correlation between the meaning of work as a calling and work engagement (r = .612; p < .05). Based on the result, it could be concluded that teachers’ self efficacy and meaning of work as a calling could not be treated as one unit, but each correlated independently with their work engagement.

Abstract

Over the course of her career as a psychologist, the writer has encountered a lot of problems in children, which when being explored further on, turned out to originate from problems related to parenting and marriage. On the other hand, throughout the years of being a lecturer, the writer has become convinced that it is essential for Indonesia’s young generation to have entrepreneurial personality characteristics in order to improve the nation’s competitiveness. Her experience as a psychologist and her journey as a lecturer have inspired the writer to explore marital and parenting problems, and how both of them can be worked on to facilitate the development of entrepreneurial personality characteristics in children, for the sake of nation’s advancement.
