Abstract

AbstractReading is one of several skills that students must master in learning English. Teacher needs proper methods especially in teaching reading. Implementing the teaching method affects student learning outcomes, so the teacher should consider the appropriate teaching methods by initiating the class environment and the student's condition. The aims of this research are; 1. To identify how the implementation of choral reading and SQ3R methods are used by the teacher, 2. What the problems are found by the teacher in applying these methods, and 3. What the teacher’s ways are to overcome the problems in applying these methods in teaching reading at the seventh-grade students at MTsN 1 Ponorogo. This research was conducted at MTsN 1 Ponorogo by using descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected through observation, interview, and documentation. The data from interview and observation were obtained in the form of interview and observation transcripts, and the documentation results were in the form of lesson plan. The data were analyzed using the theory of Miles and Huberman. The steps were data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. To test the validity of the data, the researcher used triangulation of data sources. The researcher found that the implementation of Choral Reading and SQ3R methods was divided into some steps. The steps of the choral reading method were the teacher gave an example of the correct reading, the students were repeated after the teacher, and the teacher went around to check the students' mistakes. The steps in the SQ3R method were survey, read, recite, and review. The problems faced by the teacher in applying these methods were students were not enthusiastic about following the lesson, and students often did not bring dictionaries. Meanwhile, the problems were solved by announcing that the students must submit an assignment, and the teacher consistently used the methods over several meetings and instructed the students to borrow a dictionary from a friend in another class or at the library. Keywords: Teaching Method, Teaching Reading, Choral Reading, SQ3R

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light numerous challenges in the field of English language learning, including the need for strict adherence to health protocols like school closures, mask mandates, and frequent handwashing. This period required a swift adaptation to blended learning, fostering critical and creative thinking to address COVID-19 issues. This study aims to investigate various strategies utilized by English teachers to enhance reading skills amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic. Transcription data were gathered through observational methods and interviews involving three participants – one teacher and two students. Grounded theory was employed for data analysis, revealing eight strategies for improving students' reading abilities. These strategies include utilizing E-learning (WhatsApp) as a platform for delivering reading materials, employing visual aids like PPT presentations and YouTube videos to illustrate texts, identifying and marking challenging vocabulary in PDF texts, translating sentences using online tools (Google Translate), facilitating oral reading through WhatsApp's voice-notes feature, assigning reading tasks on specific websites or PDFs, engaging in Q and A discussions on WhatsApp, and conducting project discussions via virtual platforms like WhatsApp and Google Meet. This study contributes to the understanding of reading teaching practices for junior high students during the COVID-19 pandemic, thus expanding the knowledge of strategies employed by teachers in the teaching of reading.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translator's voice in the discursive creative translation of the song Pura-Pura Lupa by Mahen. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research seeks to explore the translator's role in reconstructing meaning through linguistic adaptation and cultural reinterpretation. The primary data consists of the song lyrics in the source language (Indonesian), performed by Mahen, and their translation into the target language (English), performed by Emma Heesters. Data collection was conducted using a documentation method by gathering and comparing both versions of the lyrics. The theoretical foundation of this study is based on the theory of discursive creative translation, which emphasizes the translator's active role in shaping discourse. Following an interactive model, the analysis process consists of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the translator's voice is reflected in structural and semantic changes, idiomatic adaptation, and shifts in perspective. This study reinforces the idea that translation is not merely a mechanical process but a discursive act that requires linguistic and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

This study examines the use of narrative techniques in depicting trauma and fragmented memories in the short story "Dimensions" by Alice Munro. This research aims to reveal how the narrative structure of the short story reflects the traumatic experience of the protagonist, Doree, by using Gérard Genette's narrative theory (1980) as an analytical framework. This research uses the short story "Dimensions" as the material object and is studied with a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis reveals that Munro employs several narrative techniques—ellipsis, focalization, and analepsis—to depict trauma. Ellipsis conveys the characters' inability to access or fully process certain aspects of their traumatic experiences. The shifting focalization between external and internal perspectives reflects the dissociation and fragmented sense of identity often associated with trauma. Meanwhile, analepsis illustrates how characters continue to relive their past traumas through persistent flashbacks. This research reveals that the narrative structure of "Dimensions" functions not only as a storytelling tool, but also as a direct representation of the characters' own traumatic experiences. Keywords: Alice Munro, Trauma, Narrative Technique, Gérard Genette, Ellipsis, Focalization.
