Abstract

Preventing suicide: Information for teachers is a 42-second animated video, publication media for the WHO 2019 anti-suicide campaign, discussing suicide among adolescents is a real and inherent phenomenon in society, through this illustration other important information will be conveyed through animated videos. Against this background, the urgency in this research is to analyze the content of the animated video which contains elements of framing devices (methaphors, catchphrases, exemplars, depictions, and visual images) and reasoning devices (roots, and appeal to principle) based on Gamson and Modiglani's framing theory model. The results of this research can show the visual elements in the animated video that contain elements of framing devices and reasoning devices displayed in the animated video. The benefit of this research is to understand how framing analysis frames or conveys problems by displaying creative visuals that can attract the attention of its target audience.

Abstract

Pagoda roofs as a characteristic of Chinese-style mosques have a multilevel design and can affect the interior aspects. The impact of the pagoda roof on the interior is still quite limited. This research aims to examine the shape of the pagoda roof at Cheng Ho Mosque Surabaya on the function of interior natural lighting, and find the meaning of the roof shape. The method used is architectural morphology analysis based on Nicola Marzot's theory, direct observation data collection and documentation. The results showed that the Cheng Ho Mosque pagoda roof functions as an efficient natural lighting element, has an octagon pattern with stained glass openings, and is a symbol of acculturation of Islamic-Chinese culture and spirituality. This research is expected to contribute theoretically, enriching the understanding of traditional architectural functions that are not only symbolic, but also functional and ecological in the context of cultural acculturation and space efficiency. Abstract

Manga utilizes character expressions to convey complex emotional narratives. This is especially true when text is limited or omitted, such as scenes in Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond manga. Miyamoto Musashi, the strong and masculine main character, has several expressions of holding back tears. Reflecting emotions are depicted through facial elements such as forehead, eyebrows and eyes. The research aims to analyze the character of Musashi holding back tears in volume 32. The method used consists of three, namely analysis of shading techniques, analysis of facial expressions and gesture analysis.  Data collection through non-participant observation and literature study. The result is that the combination of visual techniques, facial expressions, and body gestures is able to bring to life the character's inner emotions in a strong and expressive manner. This research is useful in revealing the role of visual elements in strengthening emotional narratives and deepening characterization, as well as making a significant contribution to the study of visual works and comic media. Abstract

Sikka ikat weaving is one of the cultural treasures of the archipelago originating from Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Made with skills that are passed down from generation to generation, but not much has been studied in depth in the context of visual elements and their functions in social life and their meaning content. This research becomes important in the realm of Visual Communication Design to analyze the visual elements and symbolism of weaving motifs to reveal the social functions and meanings they contain in the lives of Sikka people. The urgency of this research lies in the importance of preserving local culture as well as in-depth understanding of the values contained in the visual elements of weaving, and there are also not many studies that identify the relationship between visual elements and their functions in daily life. The purpose of this study is to analyze the visual elements of Sikka ikat weaving to determine their social function and symbolic meaning for the local community. This research uses a narrative literature review method based on Greenhalgh's theory, with data collection techniques through literature study. The research found that Sikka ikat woven fabric not only functions as a wearable object, but also as a medium of cultural communication that is full of symbolic meanings, social functions, and undergoes value transformation in the contemporary context. This research is useful for enriching visual studies, as well as supporting the preservation and development of Sikka ikat weaving as a socially relevant and creative medium of cultural communication. Abstract

Sustainable design indicates that one of the criterions to achieve sustainability, is working with natural resources, local material in particular. Majalengka Regency, West Java province in Indonesia that has local material terracotta (clay) wishes to build its Cultural Centre. This proposed design utilizes local material terracotta (clay) that is mixed into rammed earth due to availability of the materials. The phases of the process of utilization will be expressed according to the cradle-to-grave paradigm, well known as Life-Cycle-Assessment (LCA), a method of assessment to sustainable product. The method is action research based on design models, including the method of LCA and method of design, and many aspects of the design that would be concerning sustainable manner. The sequential phases from a to z will show how designing with local material, in this case rammed earth, according to the assessment tool, responsible for the process of extraction–forming–usage–benefit–waste disposal. This proposed design hopefully will increase the willingness of designers to adopt and apply design with local material which is rarely utilized. Hopefully, the results will be popularizing the usage of local material to achieve more sustainable design Keywords: LCA; sustainable; terracotta; rammed earth

Abstract

Traffic safety is a crucial issue that requires serious attention, particularly among adolescents, who often constitute one of the most vulnerable groups in traffic accident statistics. Their risk-taking behavior and lack of driving experience make them highly susceptible to road-related incidents. The recent surge in traffic violations and accidents involving students in Cirebon City highlights the urgent need for educational interventions that are both communicative and contextually relevant. This study employs a qualitative case study approach with a design-based component, aiming not only to explore adolescent perceptions of traffic safety but also to develop a culturally appropriate print comic as an educational medium. The research was conducted at SMAK Terang Bangsa Cirebon, selected as a representative site for contextualizing comic-based intervention. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and thematic content analysis of student responses. The research was carried out in two phases: an initial exploratory stage to understand students’ knowledge, behaviors, and media preferences, followed by the design and evaluation of a comic showcase tailored to their socio-cultural realities. The findings suggest that comics can effectively convey traffic safety messages in a relatable and engaging manner, stimulate personal reflection, and raise awareness of safer driving behaviors among high school students. These results demonstrate the potential of thematically designed educational comics as an alternative medium for promoting traffic safety awareness among adolescents, especially within the context of urban secondary education.   Keywords: Cirebon, Comics, Traffic, Adolescents, Case Study

Abstract

ChoSik as the flagship product of Sikka Regency, requires a packaging design that is not only attractive but also reflects the local identity. The packaging design of this chocolate product has undergone four changes since 2018 to date. This research focuses on the design changes between the 2019 and 2023 editions, with the aim to analyze the changes in the form and visual design of Sikka Chocolate product packaging from the 2nd edition 2019 to the 3rd edition 2023, as well as evaluating its impact on the packaging function and representation of local cultural identity in the context of marketing strategy and consumer segmentation. Using an analytical method based on the principles of totality and time according to W. H. Mayall developed by Dr. Ahadiyat Joedawinata, this research evaluates aspects of function (performance), aesthetics (form), and symbolic value (value) in packaging design. Elements such as shape, color, illustration, and typography were analyzed to identify the visual change factors. The results show that there is a significant change in the visual design that leads to modern and minimalist styles, thus reducing the representation of the previously strong local cultural identity. This study provides important insights for designers and the packaging industry in developing products that are in line with local cultural values and market needs. With this approach, design changes not only provide aesthetic benefits but also economic value for regional superior products. Keywords: Sikka Chocolate, Packaging Design, Change, Design
