Abstract

Several regional languages in Indonesia have experienced a decline in vitality, some even becoming extinct. Javanese, with the largest number of speakers, could potentially experience the same condition if not maintained sustainably. One factor contributing to the marginalization of Javanese is the growing popularity of imported foods among the millennial generation, which distances them from traditional culinary vocabulary in Javanese. This study aims to examine the role of traditional culinary tourism in sustaining the existence of the Javanese language in Tulungagung. The research employed a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach through field observations, interviews with culinary business owners, and discourse analysis of language use in promotion and interactions among entrepreneurs, tourists, and local communities. The findings reveal that Javanese continues to be consistently used in the naming of traditional foods, transactional communication between sellers and buyers, and culinary history narratives passed on to visitors. The use of Javanese in these contexts strengthens local cultural identity while promoting intergenerational language transmission. The study also identified 22 traditional culinary products that remain preserved, with language practices combining Javanese Krama and Ngoko, as well as code-switching with Indonesian depending on communicative needs. These findings affirm that traditional culinary tourism in Tulungagung not only contributes to the preservation of gastronomic heritage but also serves as a strategic medium for the maintenance and revitalization of the Javanese language in the era of globalization.

Abstract

Parental divorce is a social phenomenon that greatly affects children’s development, particularly in their social and emotional aspects. This study aims to describe the representation of children’s experiences in coping with parental divorce in Indonesian children’s and young adult literature, as well as its implications for social-emotional competence. The research employed a qualitative method with a content analysis approach on three Indonesian literary works with divorce as the main theme: Seruni by Almas Sufeeya, Another Sorry by Fahrul Khakim, and the picture book Bagai Bumi Berhenti Berputar (As If the Earth Stopped Turning) by Clara Ng. The data, in the form of textual excerpts, were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s model. The findings indicate that parental divorce is represented as having an impact on children’s interpersonal difficulties, emotional regulation, sense of loss, grief, and inner conflict. Seruni highlights emotional struggles and impulsive decisions; Another Sorry portrays sibling dynamics; while Bagai Bumi Berhenti Berputar presents a nurturing approach that supports children’s emotional stability. Positive representations reveal that parental support can reduce the negative effects of divorce. The analysis also shows alignment with the five dimensions of CASEL’s social-emotional competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Thus, children’s literature serves as both a reflective and educational medium to foster emotional development in children experiencing parental divorce.

Abstract

Knowledge of culturally influenced emotionality is an important set of knowledge for culturally responsive counseling practice. Culture influences the perception, control, and expression of emotions not least within counselling where much emphasis is laid on sensitivity to cultural norms and values. The purpose of this research is to describe forms of emotional languages in Madurese culture and discuss the implications for culturally responsive counseling. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, where data is obtained through literature review, interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of this study show that the Madurese people manifest their feelings to others directly (blak-blakan) and indirectly using symbolic language with the values of dignity (martabat), propriety (tengka), patience (sabbhar), and social solidarity. An understanding of these ways of communicating emotions is critical in counseling for the development of therapeutic relationships that are both effective and culturally sensitive. The study suggests the need for integrating more empathy, contextually and culturally sensitive training approach that takes into consideration local value system as well as the need to tailor interventions to reflect local cultural sensitivities as a way of improving the effectiveness of psychological support.

Abstract

This study explores the ecological dimensions of Semerbak Mayang, a poetry anthology by D. Zawawi Imron, through an ecocritical lens. Situated within the cultural framework of Madura, these poems reveal a deep interconnection between humans and nature, where natural elements are not merely background settings but living subjects that reflect identity, memory, and ethical consciousness. This research aims to examine the forms, meanings, and ecological messages conveyed in the poems using a qualitative approach and ecocritical theory. The findings indicate that Imron's works are rich in local wisdom, reverence for nature, and subtle critiques of environmental degradation brought about by modernization. Symbols such as the sea, the land, and the wind are employed not only as poetic imagery but as mediums of contemplation and cultural expression. The poems function as an aesthetic space that also embodies environmental advocacy rooted in indigenous perspectives. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the role of literature, particularly poetry, as a powerful tool for ecological awareness and cultural education. Abstract

Menulis paragraf merupakan keterampilan yang esensial untuk dimiliki mahasiswa. Keterampilan ini berperan fundamental dalam pengembangan keterampilan lainnya, seperti berpikir kritis, berpikir logis, berpikir kreatif, dan penyampaian gagasan secara efektif serta efisien. Meskipun demikian, esensi ini perlahan terabaikan akibat penyalahgunaan teknologi. Salah satu upaya untuk menguatkan pemahaman dan mengasah keterampilan menulis paragraf adalah dengan inovasi pembelajaran berbasis gamifikasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan menjabarkan implementasi chain writing berbasis gamifikasi di kelas perkuliahan Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini memanfaatkan metode kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa kelas Pendidikan Bahasa Indonesia. Data berupa deskripsi pelaksanaan pembelajaran yang dikumpulkan dengan observasi dan paragraf hasil tulisan mahasiswa yang dikumpulkan dengan dokumentasi. Analisis data dilakukan dengan model alir. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa (1) sintaks pembelajaran chain writing dapat diterapkan dengan berbasis gamifikasi; (2) paragraf yang ditulis mahasiswa menggunakan beragam piranti kohesi (kohesif); (3) paragraf yang ditulis mahasiswa memuat hubungan parataksis dan hipotaksis sehingga membentuk koherensi; (4) sebagian besar mahasiswa memberikan respons dan perspektif yang positif terhadap strategi yang diterapkan. Dengan demikian, disimpulkan bahwa strategi chain writing berbasis gamifikasi merupakan strategi yang andal untuk membantu mahasiswa memperdalam pemahaman dan terampil menulis paragraf.

Abstract

It is a necessity for educators, parents, and policymakers to understand and optimize the developmental patterns of early childhood language. This research examines the current and future projection of the developmental patterns of early childhood language aspects (receptive, expressive, and literacy). The findings of this study will serve as a practical guide for educators and parents, helping them design appropriate social and personal interventions according to the unique needs of each child. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data obtained from document analysis of accreditation results from several early childhood education institutions in East Java. Data analysis was conducted simultaneously using the interactive model approach by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, which includes data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was ensured through source and method triangulation. The results show that receptive language is stimulated through activities such as storytelling and expressive language through question-and-answer sessions. Some educators have not yet facilitated children to retell something they know or to express ideas in writing or scribbles. The use of IT to stimulate children's language skills is one of the essential things. It is predicted that there will be a shift towards a more holistic, integrated, and play-based approach, combining all three aspects of language into a complete unit by leveraging IT in the future. In conclusion, language development requires a balance between technological innovation and quality human interaction to optimize a child's linguistic potential.

Abstract

The appropriate use of language register is crucial in BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) learning. However, many learners still struggle to adjust their language choice according to the communication context. This study aims to (1) describe the types of errors made by BIPA learners in choosing language register and (2) describe the factors causing these errors. Using a qualitative approach with the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method, the study analyzed eight academic sources from the last 15 years, obtained from Google Scholar and Science Direct, focusing on errors in language register selection and BIPA learning. The findings reveal common errors, including difficulties distinguishing formal and informal registers, limited understanding of informal expressions, interference from native languages, confusion in recognizing language register differences, speaking anxiety, inappropriate use of formal registers in informal settings, impolite word choices, and use of informal registers in formal contexts. Contributing factors include limited awareness of audience-based register selection, insufficient practical learning, restricted vocabulary leading to interference, the influence of local dialects, nervousness and fear of mistakes, weak grammar knowledge, inappropriate word choices, and differing cross-cultural standards of politeness. These findings highlight the need for more contextual teaching materials in BIPA to enhance learners’ communicative competence.

Abstract

Dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA), pemahaman basa-basi berperan penting dalam mengembangkan kompetensi pragmatik dan sensitivitas antarbudaya. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan wujud dan fungsi tuturan basa-basi pemelajar BIPA dalam komunikasi dengan penutur asli. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan sampel sepuluh pemelajar BIPA Universitas Negeri Surabaya yang dipilih secara purposif. Data berupa tugas keterampilan berbicara dalam bentuk audio dan video dianalisis melalui transkripsi, identifikasi konteks, klasifikasi fungsi basa-basi, dan triangulasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemelajar mempraktikkan basa-basi berupa sapaan, pujian, negosiasi, hingga penutup interaksi, baik dalam konteks formal maupun nonformal. Tuturan tersebut mencerminkan kesadaran pragmatik dan nilai kesantunan Indonesia. Temuan ini berimplikasi pada pengembangan materi ajar BIPA berbasis interkultural yang menekankan strategi komunikasi sopan dan efektif lintas budaya.

Abstract

Through the beauty of its metaphor, poetry has a very strong appeal to the listener and the reader. The existence of poetry is often an important part of the means of communication, especially in preaching. Barzanji's poem is a form of representation of the life of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH which is framed in the form of a very beautiful metaphorical sentence. This study aims to analyze and describe religious values in the form of metaphorical sentences in the poem Barzanji by Abu Ja'far Al-Barzanji which is related to the religious values of the Prophet. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive with data in the form of word order. The data were analyzed referring to religious values consisting of exemplary values, glory, purity, respect, and compassion. The results of this study show that Barzanji's poems contain religious values that are shaped in metaphors. The analysis of religious values in Barzanji's poems is important as an effort to provide an understanding that the existence of literary works has a very important role in strengthening spiritual identity in the present and the future. Through the study of Islamic literature, it can teach about the importance of strengthening religious teachings as a guide to achieve the true goals of life. This research produces references in maintaining Islamic values in the world of education. The richness of religious values in Barzanji's poems which is directly guided by the behavior of the Prophet can be one of the reasons for the importance of analyzing Islamic literary works.

Abstract

Lack of reading corner facilities, teachers often give questions with the ability to understand and remember, making the literacy ability of reading non-literary texts still low at the level of junior high school grade VIII. The purpose of analyzing and describing students' abilities in working on reading literacy at the level of analyzing, evaluating, and creating. The method used in this study is quantitative with a descriptive approach. The sample in the study amounted to 78. Data collection in this study was in the form of tests, the data in this study were the results of literacy scores reading non-literary texts, and the analysis technique in this study used IBM SPSS statistics 26 starting from the mean, mode, median, highest and lowest values. The results of the study obtained a score of analyzing 76.99 with a high category, a score of evaluating 80.71 with a high category, and creating with a score of 46.79 with a low category. From the results of the study, it is necessary to have reading literacy exercises with the levels of analyzing, evaluating, and creating (C6). Improving students in analyzing abilities is given exercises related to structure and spelling marks. Then at the evaluating level, namely providing practice questions related to assessing correct work, defending an argument, criticizing texts that are right or wrong. Then, at the creation level, increase practice in creating texts, creating creative ideas, and creating titles for non-literary texts.
