Abstract

Academic writing in higher education requires students to demonstrate critical and reflective thinking skills. However, writing instruction rarely provides a systematic model that integrates metacognitive reflection into the writing process. This gap causes students to experience difficulties in linking self-reflection with the development of academic argumentation. This study aims to develop and examine the effectiveness of a meta-reflective writing model that integrates self-assessment and inquiry-based learning to enhance students’ critical thinking skills. The study employed a research and development (R&D) approach encompassing a preliminary study, model design, expert validation, limited trials, and effectiveness testing. The participants consisted of two expert validators and 20 students enrolled in a language education program. Validation results indicated that the model was highly feasible, with a mean score of 4.47. Findings from the limited trials demonstrated improvements in the quality of students’ written argumentation. Effectiveness testing using a one-group pretest–posttest design revealed a statistically significant increase in critical thinking scores from 22.1 to 44.4 (p < 0.001).These findings confirm that the meta-reflective writing model is effective, practical, and relevant as a pedagogical approach for strengthening critical thinking in academic writing, although further refinement of indicators at the pre-writing stage is still required.

Abstract

The phenomenon of political dynasties is a contemporary issue that continually generates controversy, particularly with regard to moral legitimacy and the personalization of power within democratic practices in Indonesia. The ethical heritage of Javanese literature offers a value framework that is relevant to this issue, one of which is the value of nobility as taught in Serat Wicara Keras. This article is the result of research that applies the hermeneutic method to reveal the teachings of the value of nobility in Serat Wicara Keras as the formal object of the study, with the phenomenon of political dynasties in Indonesia serving as the material object. Library research was employed as the data collection method, beginning with planning, data inventory, data analysis, and classification. The results of the study are as follows: (1) Serat Wicara Keras is a literary work written by Yasadhipura II within the context of Javanese feudal culture. The work reflects Yasadhipura II’s critical reflection on social conditions during the leadership of Pakubuwana IV as the successor of the Islamic Mataram dynasty. (2) The value of nobility in Serat Wicara Keras is referred to as awirya, which constitutes the principal value that must be realized in order to avoid bilai (calamity). According to Yasadhipura II, nobility is not grounded in lineage, but in how an individual undertakes spiritual and ethical discipline (lelaku) until achieving mental and spiritual readiness for attaining nobility. (3) The practice of political dynasties in Indonesia is rooted in a culture of patronage and political personalization found in the leadership of several political parties. Yasadhipura II views the occurrence of political dynasties as a natural phenomenon; however, such dynasties must maintain nobility by adhering to processes that conform to the established moral order and principles.

Abstract

Abstract

Ecocritical studies in Indonesian literature have developed rapidly; however, most still focus on the human–nature relationship without adequately integrating gender and postcolonial contexts into their analyses. This study aims to fill this gap by analysing the representations of the relationships between women, land, and power in Indonesian fiction through a postcolonial ecofeminist framework. The study focuses on three works: Tanah Tabu by Anindita S. Thayf, Saman by Ayu Utami, and Sihir Perempuan by Intan Paramaditha. This study used a qualitative approach with narrative and thematic analyses conducted through coding processes and comparative synthesis across texts. The results revealed three main patterns. First, women are represented as ecological victims in colonised and exploitative landscapes. Second, women appear as agents of resistance who negotiate power relations through their bodies and spirituality and through social practices. Third, women function as epistemic mediators who utilise local myths and spiritual knowledge to challenge the dominant ecological discourses. These findings show that literary works not only represent environmental crises but also produce alternative ecological knowledge that is grounded in local contexts. This study contributes to the development of ecofeminist studies by emphasising the importance of intersectional perspectives from Global South contexts in Indonesian literary studies and by expanding ecocriticism as a field of knowledge production and ecological resistance.

Abstract

Research on polygamy in Indonesian cinema has largely been dominated by Western feminist perspectives and moral-sociological approaches, often overlooking the progressive theological dimensions embedded within Islamic teachings. Yet Islam offers the exemplary figure of Khadijah Ra. bint Khuwaylid, whose life embodies ethical leadership, economic autonomy, and gender justice. This study formulates the concept of “Khadijah Feminism” as a theological-ethical framework and examines the representation of women and polygamy in four Indonesian films: Berbagi Suami (2006), Surga yang Tak Dirindukan (2015), Madu Murni (2023), and 1 Imam 2 Makmum (2025). Employing Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, the research integrates textual-narrative analysis, cinematographic interpretation, and Islamic feminist hermeneutics through the ethical lens of Khadijah. The findings demonstrate that most films continue to reproduce patriarchal religious discourses by portraying women’s patience and obedience as the primary indicators of piety while marginalizing Khadijah’s model of agency, justice, and moral leadership. In contrast, Madu Murni and Berbagi Suami present female protagonists who challenge patriarchal norms through economic independence, ethical reasoning, and resistance to injustice. Furthermore, polygamy is predominantly represented as a male privilege rather than as a morally accountable institution constrained by the Qur'anic principles of justice articulated in An-Nisa (4):3 and (4):129. This study contributes to Islamic feminist scholarship by introducing “Khadijah Feminism” as an alternative analytical framework that integrates faith, gender equality, and spiritual agency, while recommending more theologically grounded and ethically responsible representations of Muslim women in contemporary Indonesian cinema.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of ecological discourse in the reporting of the collapse of the Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo as covered by Detik.com. The study employs a Critical Eco-Discourse Analysis approach, combining Stibbe’s ecolinguistic framework and Fairclough’s critical discourse model, to examine how events, actors, and ecological ideologies are represented in online news texts. Data were collected from Detik.com articles reporting the chronology, causes, and impacts of the building collapse. The findings indicate that the media primarily framed the incident as a technical tragedy while largely overlooking ecological and regulatory factors such as dense spatial planning, soil conditions, and limited building standards. The role of supervisory institutions and eco-boarding school mitigation practices was rarely mentioned. These results highlight the need to strengthen ecological discourse in pesantren reporting by involving diverse sources and emphasizing environmental, governance, and student safety aspects. This study concludes that Detik.com’s coverage tends to marginalize ecological dimensions and institutional responsibility, thereby limiting public understanding of the structural and environmental factors underlying the incident. The study contributes theoretically to the ecolinguistics of pesantren and practically to the development of safer and more sustainable pesantren management policies.

Abstract

Increased global attention to BIPA has encouraged the use of the Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach, but research on this topic is considered inconsistent and individualistic. This study aims to map publication trends, collaboration patterns, and the impact of CLIL research citations on BIPA using bibliometric analysis assisted by R Studio Biblioshiny. The results of the analysis show a significant surge in publications in 2021 due to pandemic adaptation, with Indonesia identified as a major knowledge center. However, critical findings reveal a clear gap in international collaboration, with publications dominated by Single Country Publications (SCP). This indicates a lack of research partnerships between Indonesian researchers and other countries. The study concludes that there is a need to transform individual initiatives into a strategic national agenda. Implicitly, policymakers need to prioritize cross-border research collaboration as an instrument of language diplomacy to strengthen the relevance and existence of BIPA globally.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the pragmatic markers, meanings, and functions of sarcastic humor in Instagram Reels comments on the @laporpak_trans7 account during August–September 2025. Sarcastic humor on social media functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for socio-political criticism and public responses to policy issues. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach based on integrative discourse pragmatics. The data consisted of 50 sarcastic utterances collected from comments on five Instagram Reels videos. Data were gathered through observation and note-taking techniques and analyzed using cybertextual contexts. The findings indicate that sarcastic humor is marked by hyperbole, identity-based wordplay, direct satire, evaluative diction, and emoticons that help convey sarcastic intentions in digitalcommunication. The meanings expressed through sarcastic humor include criticism of government policies, public officials’ behavior, the use of state facilities, and policy transparency. Functionally, sarcastic humor serves as a medium for emotional expression, social criticism, symbolic reprimand of those in power, and representation of public opinion. The study concludes that sarcastic humor represents a multimodal form of communication and symbolic social resistance in digital spaces. Its novelty lies in integrating the analysis of pragmatic markers, meanings, and funct ions within cybertextual contexts, providing a more comprehensive understanding of sarcastic humor as socio-political expression in the digital public sphere.

Abstract

This article explores the phallic and patriarchal imaginaries structuring Ahmad Fuadi’s widely celebrated Islamic Bildungsroman Negeri 5 Menara. Focusing on the recurrent motif of the minaret and other vertical architectures, this study reads these structures as a chain of lingga-like monuments that concentrate male creativity, religious aspiration, and class ascent, while rendering female figures structurally marginal. The analysis builds on a qualitative close reading of the novel’s narrative, triangulating Daniélou’s conception of the lingga as sacred sign of male creative power with Lacanian concept of the phallus as empty signifier, the formation of subjectivity, and phallogocentrism. Through this lens, Alif Fikri and the Sahibul Menara emerge as paradigmatic subjects whose desires, failures, and eventual success are organised around the minaret as symbolic centre, whereas women—Amak, Alif’s sister, and other peripheral figures—are confined to what the one-sex model and phallic norm encode as remainder, lack, or abject. The article shows that, beneath its inspirational rhetoric of “Man Jadda Wajada” and its celebration of perseverance, Negeri 5 Menaraquietly reproduces a long-standing pattern in Indonesian prose whereby the project of “building civilisation” is reserved for masculine bodies aligned with the phallus. This article reframes a widely acclaimed pesantren novel as a key site for rethinking gendered subjectivity, Islamic schooling, and class formation in contemporary Indonesian literature.

Abstract

This study explores the latent structure of digital reading strategies among medium-frequency social media users by integrating three dimensions: reading behavior, interaction patterns, and text characteristics. The study responds to a gap in digital reading research, in which these dimensions are often examined separately even though online comprehension requires simultaneous navigation, evaluation, interaction, and integration of multimodal texts. Anchored in interactive reading theory, the construction-integration model, and the new literacies perspective, the study employed an exploratory quantitative survey involving 226 students of Makassar State University who accessed social media for 1-3 hours per day. The questionnaire measured reading behavior, interaction patterns, and text characteristics, with each dimension represented by 10 statement items. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The results showed a feasible factorization matrix (KMO = 0.664; Bartlett's Test of Sphericity, p < 0.001) and produced one latent factor with an eigenvalue of 2.132 that explained 71.07% of the variance. High factor loadings for reading behavior (0.890), text characteristics (0.873), and interaction patterns (0.760) indicate that the three dimensions form a single construct, termed the integrative digital reading strategy model. The findings provide a theoretical basis for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), instrument refinement, and literacy interventions that strengthen students' strategic, critical, and evaluative engagement with digital texts.
