Abstract

Introduction: Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being, including maintaining reproductive health, is one of the key targets of the SDGs, which is especially crucial during adolescence when sexual maturity begins, and inadequate knowledge can increase the risk of reproductive-health problems. The use of appropriate and engaging methods and media will be more effective in increasing knowledge. Learning through play using the GenRe Kit can be an alternative to enhance students’ knowledge, particularly about reproductive health. This study aimed to determine the effect of using the GenRe Kit (Snakes and Ladders and Reproductive Organ Apron) as a health promotion medium on the level of adolescents’ knowledge of reproductive health at SMP Dharma Kirti, Karangasem Regency, Bali. Methods: This research was a quantitative study that used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest and posttest approach. It was conducted at SMP Dharma Kirti, Karangasem Regency, Bali, in August 2024, with 30 ninth-grade students as participants. Results: The results of this study showed that before the intervention using the GenRe Kit, the participants (n = 30) were given a pretest, with a minimum score of 45 and a maximum score of 95. The average pretest score was 74.33 with a standard deviation of 13.8. After the intervention, the participants were given a posttest, and the results indicated that the average posttest score was 82.17 with a standard deviation of 10.05. The minimum score obtained in the posttest was 60, while the maximum score was 95.Conclusions: The GenRe Kit intervention produced a significant improvement in adolescents’ reproductive-health knowledge (Δ = 7.84, p = 0.001) and demonstrates its practical value as an interactive learning tool that can support school-based reproductive-health education and strengthen efforts to achieve relevant SDG targets.

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) remains a major cause of vision loss, and while chronic hyperglycemia drives its pathogenesis, inconsistent findings on the VEGF +405G/C polymorphism and the absence of Indonesian data highlight the need to clarify potential genetic susceptibility. The purpose is to determine the association between the VEGF +405C/G rs2010963 gene polymorphism and the risk of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in an Indonesian population. Methods: Our observational case-control study enrolled 100 type-2 diabetes mellitus patients (50 DR patients vs. 50 non-DR)  who underwent comprehensive clinical and ophthalmic examinations. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples, and the VEGF +405C/G rs2010963 polymorphism was genotyped using RFLP-PCR, with results confirmed by sequencing. Results: Our study included a total of 100 participants with no significant differences in baseline characteristics other than poorer visual acuity and significantly higher LDL and lower HDL levels in the DR case group. Allelic and genotypic distributions of the VEGF +405 rs2010963 polymorphism were similar between both groups, with HWE equilibrium analysis showing no significant deviation. Neither crude (GG; crude OR 0.32 [0.87 - 1.21]), age and sex-adjusted analysis (0.41 [0.11 - 1.60]), nor blood pressure, HbA1c level, BMI, and smoking status-adjusted OR of 0.38 (0.70 - 2.06), demonstrated a significant association between VEGF +405 rs2010963 polymorphisms and DR risk in our cohorts. Conclusion: Our study suggests that VEGF +405C/G polymorphisms may not serve as an independent risk factor for DR in the Indonesian population.

Abstract

Introduction: Monitoring the growth and development of children under five is essential for the early detection of stunting and developmental delays. However, the skills of Posyandu cadres in conducting comprehensive monitoring are still limited, especially in interpreting growth charts and assessing developmental milestones. The use of the PRIMAKU application as a digital tool has the potential to improve the accuracy and efficiency of growth and developmental monitoring. Methods: This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of Posyandu cadres through training on Stimulation, Early Detection, and Early Intervention of Child Growth and Development (SDIDTK), combined with the introduction of the PRIMAKU application. A pre–post test design was used with 40 cadres participating. Knowledge was assessed using two questionnaires on growth and development (10 items each), while skills were evaluated using an observation checklist of 13 indicators. Data analysis included t-tests and Pearson’s correlation. Results: The training resulted in a significant improvement in cadres’ knowledge of child growth (from 70 + 5.99 to 91.50 + 3.616; p = <0.001) and development (from 66.50 + 6.988 to 89.00 + 5.905; p=<0.001). Skills in using the PRIMAKU application also increased substantially, with mean scores rising from 1.35 ± 1.31 to 11.45 ± 2.17 (cohen’s=5.63), indicating an extremely large effect size. These findings indicate that combining health education, demonstration, and hands-on practice effectively enhances cadres’ competence in growth and developmental monitoring. Conclusion: SDIDTK training combined with PRIMAKU application use significantly improved the knowledge and technical skills of Posyandu cadres in monitoring early childhood growth and development. The integration of digital tools supports more accurate documentation and strengthens cadres’ roles in early detection efforts. Continued training and long-term follow-up are recommended to maintain the sustainability of these improvements.

Abstract

Introduction: In 2024, Yogyakarta Special Region ranked among the top three Indonesian provinces for foodborne outbreaks, with 65 reported cases concentrated mainly in Sleman District. These outbreaks highlight the importance of food safety practices, as poor hygiene, sanitation, and food processing skills contributed to them. Initial assessments revealed that health officers needed stronger investigative skills, and the training capacity for food handlers to produce safe food in accordance with Good Health Practice (GHP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) required enhancement. Methods: This secondary data analysis evaluated a community service program conducted in Sleman District (May-August 2025), comprising foodborne outbreak investigation training for surveillance and environmental health officers, and food safety training for food handlers. Knowledge was assessed via pre- and post-tests (0-100), and satisfaction via a Likert scale (1-5). Total sampling was applied, excluding participants with incomplete scores. Paired t-tests were performed using Stata 17.0 (p<0.05). Ethical approval was obtained from Universitas Gadjah Mada's MHREC (No. KE/FK/2027/EC/2025).Results: The food safety training included 21 participants from 14 small-scale catering businesses, focusing on hygiene, sanitation, and GHP/GMP. The epidemiological training involved 49 participants from 25 primary health centers and district officers, with an emphasis on outbreak investigation, case finding, and response measures. Both trainings showed improved knowledge as measured by pre- and post-tests, with mean score increases of 9.15 (95% CI 0.24-15.90, p<0.05) for food safety training and 11.1 (95% CI 7.70-14.54, p<0.01) for epidemiological training. The epidemiological training demonstrated a greater impact. All participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the program’s content, trainers, facilities, and applicability, although 4% suggested improvements in timing and duration. Conclusion: This program demonstrates that simultaneously enhancing the skills of food handlers and health officers can strengthen food safety systems, reduce outbreak risks, and support sustainable public health in Sleman and similar districts.

Abstract

Introduction: Childhood vision impairment can have long-term adverse effects on health, education, and socioeconomic status. Early detection through school-based eye health programs is essential, but often limited by resource constraints. Mobile application-based visual acuity screening tools offer a potentially accessible solution for school-aged children. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of such mobile applications for visual acuity screening in this population. Methods: The review followed PRISMA guidelines and was prospectively registered in the PROSPERO database. Methodological quality was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool for cross-sectional studies and the Jadad scale for randomized controlled trials. Meta-analysis was performed using Meta-Disc and Review Manager software. Diagnostic performance was evaluated through sensitivity–specificity analysis and comparison of mean LogMAR values. Results: Six studies involving 2,891 participants were included. Both analytical approaches demonstrated favourable results for mobile application-based visual acuity screening compared with the reference standard. The S-ROC analysis yielded an AUC of 0.887, indicating strong diagnostic accuracy. The mean LogMAR difference was 0.02 (p = 1.0), showing no significant difference between mobile application-based and standard visual acuity assessments. Factors such as the use of trained examiners and adequate lighting were found to enhance screening accuracy. Conclusion: Mobile application-based visual acuity screening demonstrates reliable accuracy for assessing visual function in school-aged children. Its implementation in school-based screening programs may provide a practical and accessible solution, particularly in resource-limited settings, when supported by relevant sectors and stakeholders.

Abstract

Introduction: The quality of health center services is influenced by various factors, including the proficiency of analysts in performing fundamental tests such as Gram staining. This skill is of critical importance for ensuring the accurate interpretation of results, ensuring that therapy and treatment is in accordance with standard practices. However, the competence of health analysts in the health center's working area varies considerably, which has the potential to affect the interpretation of test results. The objective of this activity was to enhance the knowledge and skills of health analysts at Puskesmas in Jayapura City in performing Gram staining. Methods: This study used a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design (without a control group). The activity was carried out in Jayapura in June 2025, during a one-day training session. The research population consisted of all laboratory analysts who participated, with 11 participants who met the inclusion criteria included as samples using total sampling techniques. Knowledge assessment was conducted using a multiple-choice questionnaire. The data were analyzed descriptively to describe the characteristics of the respondents and the distribution of scores, as well as inferentially using a paired t-test to compare the mean pre-test and post-test scores, with a significance level of 0.05.Results: The implementation of gram staining training resulted in a significant enhancement in the average knowledge score, which increased from 4.45 to 6.73 (an increase of 2.27 points). A statistically significant difference was identified between the pre-test and post-test scores (t(10) = 2.46; p = 0.034), exhibiting a medium-to-large effect size (Cohen's dz = 0.74).Conclusion: The impact of gram staining training on learning outcomes was significant, with a moderate to large effect size (Cohen's dz = 0.74). However, it is important to note that the assessment of skills not included in this study is also necessary.
