Abstract

BackgroundAdolescents require support from those closest to them when facing psychosocial challenges related to identity formation; such support helps prevent failures that could lead to depression. Beyond parents, siblings serve as a primary source of support, as positive sibling relationships tend to lower depression levels compared to situations marked by constant conflict between them.ObjectiveThis study aims to analyze the relationship between sibling relationship patterns and levels of depression among adolescents in East Jakarta.MethodsA quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional design on an age group in East Jakarta, Indonesia. Four hundred forty five adolescents were participated in study that selected with probability sampling using cluster sampling.  Sibling relationship quality was measured using the Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (SRQ). Level depression was measured using the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI). The data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, the ANOVA statistical test was used for bivariate analysis.ResultsThe findings indicate that adolescents exhibit a “warmth” relationship pattern (M = 36.25) and mild levels of depression (60.2%). There is a significant relationship between warmth (F = 33.803, p < 0.001) and conflict (F = 4.565, p = 0.033) relationship patterns with depression levels.ConclusionAs the mean score for sibling relationship patterns increases, depression levels become less severe. Therefore, adolescents are encouraged to develop healthy sibling relationships as a supportive aspect of their self-exploration. Further research is recommended to examine the relationship between sibling relationships and other psychosocial issues among adolescents. Keywords:Adolescents, depression, sibling relationship

Abstract

BackgroundThe Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) is widely used to assess depressive symptoms; however, its validity among Indonesian nursing students has not been established.ObjectiveThe objective of this study to translate the BDI into Bahasa Indonesia and evaluate its psychometric properties among Indonesian nursing students.MethodsThe study followed the framework of adaptation and validation of instrument scale by Sousa and Rojjanasrirat. A total of 709 nursing students in Indonesia were participated with eligible criteria: actively enrolled; no history of mental health disorder and not currently on routine medication prescribed by a psychiatrist. Validity testing included exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses (EFA and CFA), concurrent validity, and assessment of ceiling and floor effects. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha.ResultsEighteen items were retained. Internal consistency was high (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.914). EFA supported a three-factor structure: Negative Attitude, Somatic Symptoms, and Impaired Performance with factor loadings  0.376 to 0.684 (KMO= 0.946; Bartlett’s test p < 0.001). CFA demonstrated acceptable model fit. Ceiling and floor effects were minimum (7.7% amd 0.01%, respectively). Concurrent validity showed a strong correlation with the DASS-21 with depression subscale (r = 0.72, p < 0.001).ConclusionThe 18-item Indonesian BDI is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing depression severity among Indonesian nursing students and can be recommended for assessing depression among nursing students.KeywordsDepression, mental health, nursing student, reliability, validity

Abstract

ObjectiveThis phenomenological study explored sociocultural factors influencing men's participation in family planning (FP).MethodsA descriptive qualitative phenomenological study was conducted in X Jakarta, Indonesia, from February to March 2026. Participants were recruited using purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step phenomenological method. Trustworthiness was ensured through member checking, peer debriefing, audit trails, and reflexive journaling. Ethical approval was obtained, and written informed consent was secured from all participants before data collection.ResultsFour interrelated themes emerged from the analysis. Men's understanding of FP was shaped by unequal reproductive health socialization and limited access to male-oriented reproductive health information, resulting in FP being perceived primarily as a woman's responsibility. This perception was reinforced by socio-cultural norms and traditional gender expectations. Despite these influences, contraceptive decision-making was generally characterized by communication and mutual agreement between spouses. However, men's participation remained constrained by psychological concerns regarding contraceptive safety, unequal access to reproductive health information, and prevailing masculinity norms.ConclusionMen's participation in FP is influenced by gendered reproductive health socialization, socio-cultural norms, marital communication, and multiple barriers to engagement. Gender-inclusive FP programs, including male-focused education and couple-centered counseling, are needed to promote shared reproductive responsibility.KeywordsFamily planning, men’s participation, phenomenology, sociocultural factors

Abstract

ObjectiveTo analyze the relationship between physical activity levels and low back pain (LBP) complaints among young adults in Beji District, Depok City, Indonesia.MethodsA quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 287 respondents aged 18–29 years.  The villages were randomly selected, while respondents were recruited using a convenience sampling technique. Physical activity levelswere assessed using the Baecke Questionnaire, which evaluates work, sports, and leisure-time activities. LBP complaints were measured using the Nordic Body Map Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square.ResultsMost respondents demonstrated a moderate level of physical activity, mild pain was the most commonly reported complaint in the middle back/waist, lower back, and buttock regions, while severe pain was reported by only a small number of respondents.  Physical activity level was not significantly associated with the severity of middle back/waist pain (OR = 2.106; p = 0.551). However, significant associations were found between physical activity level and lower back pain severity (OR = 21.572; p < 0.001) and buttock pain severity (OR = 42.058; p < 0.001).ConclusionPhysical activity level was significantly associated with lower-back and buttock pain severity but not with middle back/waist pain severity. Moderate physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of lower back and buttock pain among young adults. Promoting regular physical activity and ergonomic practices may support musculoskeletal health and reduce the risk of LBP.Keywords:Low back pain, physical activity, young adults

Abstract

ObjectiveThis study examined the effectiveness of the Reproductive Information for Healthy Empowerment (RISE) intervention in promoting improvements in reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported skills among female adolescents.MethodsA quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control group study was conducted among 130 female students aged 15–19 years from a vocational health school in Indonesia. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling and allocated at the class level to an intervention group (n = 65) and a control group (n = 65). The RISE intervention was delivered over four weeks through structured modules combining video-based learning and interactive discussions.  Data collection was conducted using a structured questionnaire assessing reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported skills. Statistical analyses included paired and independent t-tests, followed by multivariable linear regression to adjust for potential confounders.ResultsThe intervention group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in reproductive health knowledge (mean difference = 1.91, p < 0.001), attitudes (mean difference = 3.63, p < 0.001), and self-reported skills (mean difference = 1.15, p = 0.003) compared with the control group. Multivariable analysis confirmed that the RISE intervention remained significantly associated with improvements in all outcomes after adjustment for confounding variables.ConclusionThe RISE intervention effectively improved adolescents’ reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported skills, supporting its integration into school-based reproductive health promotion programs.
