Abstract

People visiting built environments are desirous of accomplishing their aim of visiting such place within the shortest possible time, devoid of negative feelings/ spatial anxiety. Meanwhile, some environment such as hospital, academic setting among others are known for complex structures whereby navigation can become daunting especially when characterised by poor wayfinding system. This therefore necessitated a study on development of wayfinding signage adapting flat design which ordinarily was a design concept invented for digital screens. Innovatively, the wayfinding system was printed for Fine and Applied Arts Building, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun Campus, relying also on colour psychology, typography, shape and user experience. Research method adopted for the study was mixed method: experimental and survey. User perception of the wayfinding system was sampled using questionnaire administered to 313 respondents. After thorough analysis, results indicated there is consistency in the interior and exterior signage colours, signage textual information are bold and descriptive. The wayfinding system with its shapes added better aesthetic to the environment. This study succeeded in demonstrating how creativity can be put into practise. Thus, recommended that Visual designers (especially in Africa) should be open to new and diverse design concepts for effective visual solution.

Abstract

Mahapatih Gajah Mada was a great figure who united the archipelago in his time, but no statues have been found that depict the figure. Archaeologists disagree on the accuracy of the human head statue artifact referenced by Mr. Muhammad Yamin, as it does not have any markers that indicate it is a statue of Mahapatih Gajah Mada. To design an accurate visualization of the character design of Mahapatih Gajah Mada, this design is divided into 2 stages: data mining and character design. Data mining involves a data search related to Mahapatih Gajah Mada and culture during the Majapahit Kingdom Era. Character design involves designing the character design of Gajah Mada using data from the references that have been obtained. Data searches have revealed that Mahapatih Gajah Mada is likely to be the Brajanata/ Kertala character in the Panji story and the Bima character in the Mahabarata story. The character has a large, tall body, strapping, crossed mustache, and wavy curls, using a headdress in the form of a foreheadband with carvings, upper arm bands made with snake motifs, a belt with a Kala head patterned buckle, and an upawita (caste rope) that crosses from the left shoulder to the right waist depicting Gajah Mada's caste. For weapons, Gajah Mada carries a keris with a cundrik type (not notched) and an oval mace, which means that Gajah Mada is one of Lord Vishnu's attendants who has a guardian nature. The design of the oval mace takes reference from door guard statues. Keywords: Character Design, Gajah Mada, Majapahit kingdom

Abstract

This research using qualitative research methods and a descriptive and semotic approach aims to analyze the values and symbolism contained in Javanese traditional wedding processions. With the development of technology and the influence of globalization, the younger generation in Java, Indonesia, tend to leave the traditional Javanese procession in their marriage. This threatens the sustainability and preservation of the cultural heritage. Data was collected through direct observation, interviews and literature study. The series of procedures for traditional Javanese wedding processions and the values contained in each procession are analyzed in depth. The results of the study show that each Javanese traditional wedding procession contains various symbols that reflect the social, religious and cultural values inherent in Javanese society. These symbols have a deep philosophical meaning and are a reflection of the relationship between the bride and groom, family and society. Although it is not an obligation, the use of Javanese traditional ritual processions in marriage for couples with Javanese ethnicity does not have a significant effect on the wedding ceremony or the days afterward, but some couples choose to do it as a form of respect for their ancestors and inherited values, and hope that life their marriage was filled with goodness and blessings passed down by the ancestors.

Abstract

Cinematography is about combining and capturing images to form a series of images that tell a story. In practice, cinematography has several compositions, such as the rule of thirds, visual composition, and camera angles. "Melawan Restu" is a music video that applies visual composition to highlight the theme of romance. Unlike other music videos, many visual compositions emphasize the meaning of each song’s lyrics. This study aims to show the visual composition that builds dramatization of the song lyrics in the music video "Melawan Restu". The method used is qualitative by using a purposive sampling technique. This study uses Gustavo Mercado's theory which discusses visual composition in cinematography. The results of this study indicate that visual composition not only provides aesthetics but also the meaning of each shot so that it can be understood by the audience. In the music video for "Melawan Restu", there is an application of the visual composition showing serenity which connotes the lyrics of the song. While several other visual compositions show sadness, powerless, and turmoil in the bad situations experienced by the female characters in the story.
