This is a descriptive qualitative study which aims at revealing the ideology of acceptance, self-love and self-perseverance of the song ON by BTS through Halliday’s (2004) Systemic Functional Linguistics and Fairclough’s (1995) concept of CDA by analyzing the transitivity, mood types and metaphors. The followings are the results namely i) the transitivity comprises 46 material process, 8 mental process, 16 relational process, 3 behavioral process and 2 verbal process; 2) the mood system consists of 47 indicative declarative, 3 indicative interogative and 25 imperatives; and 3) there are 5 metaphors found in the song. In a nut shell, this song delivers an important message of accepting and loving their true selves, self-reliance and perseverance towards prejudice and bullying from others, as well as confidence towards any challenges ahead.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the types and most prominent illocutionary acts used by the main character in James Gunn's fantasy movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. The research conducted a descriptive qualitative using Searle's taxonomy of illocutionary acts theory. There were 42 utterances found. The data analysis was performed by categorizing into representative, directive, commissive expressive, and declarative. The results showed that the most prevalent type of speech act was representative (69%) which included predicting, informing, asserting, rejecting, claiming, thinking, and believing. It was followed by directives (21%) in commanding, advising, and asking. Expressive (%) involved gratitude, apologizing, regretting, and like. Commissive (2%) contained committing the speaker to do something in the future. The dominant illocutionary act used by the main character were representatives. The main character tended to convey his utterance for describing states or events in the world that he believed it to be. Meanwhile, the main character did not use declarative at all since this act requires authority and status to do. Thus, the main character lacked any sort of power or authority in any position in the world to change the world through words.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the use of the Malay language in the capital city of Riau Province, Pekanbaru. The problem of the study is to find out the factors that influence the use of the Malay language from positive and negative aspects according to the culture of the community. This study consults 5 informants: traditional leaders, youth leaders, intellectual figures, Pekanbaru City Government, and Riau Traditional Institutions in Pekanbaru City. This research uses a triangulation method to explain that facts cannot be checked with a degree of confidence with one or more theories. For this reason, the best step to take is to look for comparative explanations by parsing the pattern of relationships and including explanations that emerge from the analysis to find comparison themes based on the possibility of available data. The results of the analysis show that there is still a lack of awareness of the people of Riau to maintain the Malay language in the city of Pekanbaru because of the low sensitivity to cultural preservation, especially regional/local languages.

Abstract

Using the A- Analyze, D- Design, D- Produce, I- Implement, and E- Evaluate (ADDIE) instructional design approach, this study aims to develop and evaluate video clips as instructional materials in teaching English 7 learners. This research was done to establish which lessons should be included, as well as the content validity and acceptance of the created video clips. The researcher used the descriptive survey and developmental methods of study to create the video clips. The following were the critical measures that were taken: 1) planning, 2) video clip development, 3) validation/evaluation, and 4) result stage. Moreover, the researcher used two sets of questionnaires/checklists to gather pertinent data on the content validity of the developed video clips in terms of objectives, lesson, organization, language, and relevance; and the level of acceptability along with suitability, adequacy, and relevance. The suggestions were consolidated and integrated into the revision of the developed video clips in English 7. Students and teachers in public schools should try out the generated video clips in English 7 as extra educational material, according to the researcher. It can also be used to remedy the lack of educational materials that cover the entire teaching and learning process. More changes to the created video clips should be made to accommodate learners' frustration levels. Finally, it is recommended that the school administrators should advise and encourage teachers to produce and come up with instructional materials in the different subject areas for additional learning materials. Also, an in-service seminar-workshop on instructional design in every subject area should be organized and conducted by education authorities in the division or in the region.
