Abstract

This paper examines the credibility of source persons for community service projects in improving financial literacy for vocational school students in Indonesia. Improving financial literacy among Indonesian youth is a long-term effort that requires multi- collaboration between the government, financial institutions, educational institutions, NGOs, and other stakeholders. Despite its substandard position to Singapore, Myanmar, and Malaysia, Indonesia’s financial literacy proficiency has improved significantly—one of which—after being catalyzed by the government’s cooperation with higher education institutions through community service programs. However, amid these improvements, greater attention must be given to capital markets, whose literacy level is most deficient compared to the banking, insurance, financing, pension fund, and financial technology sectors. By referring to the source credibility theory and PROSEM (problem rooting, solution treatments, and measurement) procedures, this study aims to improve vocational school students’ capital market literacy and determine the better expert (academician versus regulator experts) in providing basic capital market training to Indonesian vocational school students. Using 118 trainees, 59 each in classrooms trained by an academic and a capital market regulator separately, descriptive analysis along with ANOVA, paired- sample test, and independent samples test was used to observe the pre-and post-test of capital market literacy training. The results demonstrate significant improvement in students’ capital market literacy after the training. This study has demonstrated that credible trainers, especially those perceived as experts, are more effective as financial literacy sources for the trainees in capital market basic training. It provides a better guide for similar community services regarding selecting credible trainers or source persons.

Abstract

This study investigates the early formation and historical development of student service-learning in Indonesia from a global context. Employing a qualitative approach, it utilizes archival research methods for examining the inception of student service- learning, a community empowerment program conducted by the students in the country. It analyzed international documents sourced from Google Books archives, which are available through various online platforms and supplemented by the use of Google Ngram Viewer. The findings indicate that the concept of student service- learning was introduced in Indonesia during the academic year 1971/1972 and adopted by numerous universities before it became mandatory for end-year students starting from 1973 to 1974. This study represents the inaugural archival investigation that revealed that the local community warmly welcomed the arrival of students at the time because their contributions significantly improved societal well-being. Students benefited from direct experiential learning with the community, while the community received assistance and empowerment through resources provided by the universities. Furthermore, the study highlights that in discussions, especially after the establishment of Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) or service-learning as a mandatory program in 1974, numerous documents (eight in 1975 and twelve in 1976) cited KKN as a reference in the international arena. This recognition positions KKN as an exemplary service- learning program on a global scale.

Abstract

The decreased use of indigenous language among the young generation of an indigenous community in the Southern Philippines has introduced apprehension among cultural practitioners, the chief administrator, and the community of elders. With the articulated need to strengthen language learning and sustain the culture among the young Talaandig members of the tribe, the chief administrator has proposed a community engagement process for addressing this concern. This study explores the Talaandig language learning and cultural sustainability through the active involvement of an indigenous community of parents–teachers, leaders, and culture practitioners of the Talaandig tribe in Bukidnon, Philippines. Indigenous research methods and ethnographic approaches have resulted in an orthography of sight words and decodable texts culled from community group discussions, which serve as sources of reading materials for early readers of the School of Living Traditions. The findings illustrate the following points for the sustainability of language and culture: (a) the orthography drawn from decodable texts and sounds advances reading comprehension and interest; (b) indigenous knowledge derived through community engagement promotes the attainment of education for sustainable development; (c) outcomes gained from community-engaged research builds foundations for a sustained community and academe relationship; and (d) community book writing centered on indigenous culture promotes community integrity, education for the environment, and language sustainability. It is hoped that the findings could become a basis for strengthening the Talaandig language learning and cultural sustainability in the future, contributing to the literature on Education for Sustainable Development 2030.

Abstract

This study addresses the development of an automated egg incubator with backup power supply that could benefit farmer communities through the developmental research approach. A prototype is developed to respond to the needs for uninterrupted incubation which is affected by the frequent power outages that reduce its efficiency in egg handling. In this project, the automated egg incubator with a backup power supply is designed to hatch a capacity of 150 eggs (75 setters and 75 hatchers) every 21 days, ensuring continuous operation even in the absence of a consistent power supply. An inverter, connected to a battery, ensures a 12 hr uninterrupted power supply, maintaining a warm internal environment. The thermostat-controlled heater regulates the incubator’s temperature within the range of 36 °C–38 °C. In case of a power outage, the incubator can seamlessly switch to grid power during brownouts, maintenance, or the rainy season. Based on rigorous testing, the incubation period is confirmed at 21 days, with an initial hatch rate of 70%, increasing to 80% in subsequent tests. The average chick weight, measured a few hours after hatching, stands at 40.8 g. To assess its practical impact, the researchers extended the device to a local game-fowl farmer, resulting in substantial income generation and improved breeding efficiency. Beyond direct economic benefits, the automated egg incubator represents a novel technological achievement, showcasing how science and technology can empower communities, foster economic growth, and contribute to the greater good within a practical context.

Abstract

This article discusses the health promotion program among Indonesian migrant workers and their children living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, aiming for a better awareness of their health condition. In particular, this article describes and analyzes the community engagement program in Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) and Muhammadiyah Malaysia (PCIM) to provide health education and screening. Based on the preliminary study, Indonesian migrant workers and their families have limited access to healthcare facilities and programs. The program covers topics such as healthy reproduction and sexual vigilance for the youth, well-being and healthy lifestyles, as well as the importance of basic health screening. The program employs a qualitative study, employing the pre- and post-tests to measure the increase of knowledge before and after the program using descriptive statistics. As a result, an increase in awareness regarding health conditions among the youth can be identified after being exposed to the program. Meanwhile, the health screening program successfully identifies the health profile of migrant workers: a tendency to be overweight and a suffer from degenerative diseases. The screening results made them to be more aware of their health condition. The program was well received, as shown by the number of participants and further requests for a regular health screening. This finding indicates that future studies are required, to identify the daily diet of migrant workers and other health indicators. A similar phenomenon might occur with migrant workers globally, showing the importance of the provision of access and health programs for them.

Abstract

This study explores the do-it-yourself (DIY) project in an urban context, a candle making with recycled used cooking oil (UCO), aiming to empower housewives in Gaga Village, Tangerang, Indonesia. UCO, a household waste material, becomes a trigger for this project because it pollutes the environment and reduces soil fertility if discarded unresponsible. In this scenario, involving the participation of urban housewives can be a way to address this issue. Urban housewives have spare time between their daily activities and present great potential in such a project. Recycling UCO for candle- making material arguably can increase the family’s economic capacity and, at the same time, reduce environmental pollution. This project, which involved four stages— preparation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation—is assessed to examine the response of the participating housewives. The assessment employed a qualitative study, examining the project based on pre- and post-test conditions. The results show an increase in knowledge of UCO by 81.1%, utilization of UCO by 82.1%, understanding of making UCO candles by 39.3%, and understanding of economic opportunities from making UCO candles by 80.9%. Even though the DIY activity is highly interesting for housewives, 78.6% still do not know whether candle-making can be considered an economic opportunity. Through this program, other productive and creative DIY activities can also be identified that can be an extra income for their families without leaving the house. It can be concluded that further intensive and interactive training is necessary to empower housewives with further potential economic opportunities.

Abstract

This community engagement program aimed to improve the innovation of artpreneurs, a combination of artistic qualities with business sense in cultural sectors, overcoming the impact of the disruptive moment, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This program used the Asset-Based Community Development method to explore the needs of the community. The exploration process used an appreciative inquiry approach to determine strengths, opportunities, aspirations, and results based on the inquiry from the community. This program was conducted in Ngestiharjo Village, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, as a part of the community service learning program Wiradesa conducted by the students and organized by Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta. The participants were five artpreneurs who were members of the Ngestiharjo art community and own small and medium-sized enterprises. This community engagement program successfully defined the potential resources of the Ngestiharjo artpreneurs. The potential resources are intangible (network, cohesion, experiences, creativity, and quality) and tangible (venue and digital equipment) assets. These potential assets become an important element in developing a program using the Theory of Change (ToC). The results of this community engagement program are expressed in the ToC scheme which could be a guide for the members of the Ngestiharjo art community to improve their capacity to achieve their goals. Despite its limitations, this method of community development is replicable for communities with similar situations, striving toward innovations in maximizing arts and culture.
