Abstract

Food security requires transformation of the agricultural sector through the application of technology. This article discusses a community service program aimed at addressing water scarcity and low interest in agriculture among young people at Ittaqollah Islamic High School in Ambon. The method used was community development with an interdisciplinary approach, combining geophysics for water exploration and Internet of Things (IoT) technology for smart irrigation. The activity began with subsurface mapping using geoelectric resistivity, which revealed a groundwater depth of >52 meters. This finding became the basis for implementing a rainwater harvesting solution installed on the school's roof. Next, an automatic irrigation system based on an ESP32 microcontroller was built and installed, integrated with a soil moisture sensor and controllable via smartphone. The program also included outreach and practical training for students and teachers. The results showed that the irrigation system operated optimally in both automatic and manual modes. This program demonstrates that the integration of geophysics and IoT can create sustainable solutions for water security, improve irrigation efficiency, and empower young people as future agricultural actors.

Abstract

The Open Unemployment Rate (OUR) in Sidoarjo Regency reached the highest in East Java at 6.49% as of August 2024, underscoring the urgency of enhancing local human resource competencies. In Kragan Village, there is a lack of integrated development programs specifically addressing post-layoff recovery and MSME advancement social resilience of individuals and their families (Muqsith & Abidin, 2023). In response, this community service program was designed as a proactive intervention to build economic resilience in Kragan Village, Sidoarjo, a community heavily impacted by job losses. Utilizing a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the program integrated three key thematic training modules: financial literacy, human resource empowerment, and digital marketing. The methodology engaged community members—including the Village Head, the PKK Women's Group, and the Karang Taruna Youth Organization—as active collaborators in a phased intervention. Quantitative pre- and post-test data from 15 participants showed a substantial increase in knowledge, with average scores rising from 45.67 to 82.67 (p<0.001). This finding, supported by qualitative insights from group discussions and a positive perception survey, demonstrates the program’s effectiveness in enhancing participants’ understanding and capabilities. The findings highlight that a collaborative and practical training model can significantly boost community members' confidence and skills in managing personal finances, pursuing new employment opportunities, and launching micro-enterprises. The program successfully enhanced human resource capacity and digital literacy in Kragan Village. This integrated program proved effective in stimulating community-based economic self-reliance.

Abstract

A community service program (PkM) was carried out with the aim of applying appropriate technology in the form of a corn sheller machine and strengthening the marketing capacity of harvested products through education on distribution strategies and product packaging for the Sitambiri Farmers Group. Corn is recognized as a strategic commodity suitable for cultivation in dryland areas. From the demand side, corn serves as a primary raw material in the animal feed industry, making its price relatively stable and tending to increase. The Sitambiri Farmers Group, consisting of 15 members in Lumban Dolok Village, Silaen District, Toba Regency, chose to cultivate corn as an effort to increase income. However, the use of conventional corn shellers remains a challenge due to inefficiency in time and labor, as well as poor ergonomics for farmers. This PkM activity aims to improve efficiency and production quality through the application of appropriate technology in the form of a corn sheller machine. In addition, the program provides education on marketing strategies, opens opportunities for product diversification, and encourages the improvement of farmers’ welfare. The method applied in this activity was the design of a corn sheller machine using the Axiomatic House of Quality (AHOQ). The second stage of the program focused on marketing management strategies through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with members of the farmers group. The implementation of the corn sheller machine significantly increased capacity, reaching 17 kg per minute. The machine is more ergonomic as it reduces farmers’ workload, produces more uniform kernels with less product loss, and generates positive economic impacts. In the second-stage FGD, partners actively participated in discussions on distribution strategies, market segmentation, and the potential development of processed corn products. Active participation of the farmers group in discussions and simulations demonstrated an increase in their capacity to design marketing strategies suited to local conditions, such as online store marketing. Thus, the corn sheller machine improves efficiency and production quality, while marketing strategies strengthen the capacity and competitiveness of the farmers group.

Abstract

The coastal communities of Bangka Regency rely heavily on local resources, including marine fisheries and agricultural commodities. Besides being sold fresh, these commodities can also be processed into downstream products, such as renggining crackers. The purpose of the PKM activity is to empower the community by improving the skills of partners in making innovative squid-cassava renggining crackers. This activity was carried out from June to September 2025 at partner locations, namely Yayasan Lentera Orientasi Nusantara untuk Generasi Edukatif (Longe Foundation) in Balunijuk Village and SMAN 1 Merawang in Baturusa Village, Bangka Regency. The activity method was implemented using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach that emphasizes the active involvement of partners in every stage of the program. The training stages start from preparing ingredients, making dough, molding, steaming, drying, frying, to packaging. The results showed that technical training activities and demonstrations or direct practice related to the process of making squid-cassava renggining crackers were well understood by partners. Knowledge transfer to partners regarding local food processing included the transfer of knowledge, technical skills, and technology. Improving skills in the downstreaming of agricultural, marine, and fishery commodities is a concrete action in the effort to implement the agromaritime concept. Small-scale renggining production can improve partners' knowledge, such as recording costs and business results, developing packaging designs, strengthening entrepreneurial capacity, digital marketing, and local product branding strategies. Fried renggining was tested such as taste, aroma, appearance, texture, and testimonials so that partners were able to make renggining with quality improvements according to input obtained from testimonials. These renggining products also demonstrate increased economic added value, diversifying businesses and income sources, and strengthening the concept of coastal food security. Empowerment through an agromaritime approach not only strengthens partners' technical capacity but also leads to the formation of a local entrepreneurial ecosystem. Evaluations conducted in this community service include understanding raw material processing techniques, food sanitation and hygiene, dough formulation, and product packaging and storage techniques.

Abstract

This community service program aims to empower the coastal community of Huangobotu Village through an innovative approach to utilizing organic waste from the Inengo Fish Auction House (TPI) by converting it into nutrient-rich dry fertilizer. Organic waste generated from auction activities—such as fish residues, entrails, bones, skin, and scales—has not been optimally utilized. This condition has led to various environmental problems, including unpleasant odors, water pollution, and declining sanitation around the TPI area. Limited knowledge and inadequate waste-processing technology have further exacerbated the situation. Therefore, community empowerment initiatives are needed to transform this waste into more valuable products. Through a participatory approach, the implementing team engaged coastal residents, particularly youth groups (karang taruna), in technical training and mentoring for the production of dry fertilizer. The activities included raising awareness of proper waste management, demonstrating processing techniques, and applying simple methods using microbial activators. The results showed an increase in participants’ knowledge and skills in converting organic waste into useful, marketable fertilizer. Participants were able to independently apply basic processing techniques using microbial activators. Management and production levels improved by 70% and 75%, respectively, indicating the program’s effectiveness in enhancing awareness of proper waste handling. Beyond addressing environmental issues, the program also fostered greater understanding of circular economy practices within the community. Furthermore, the dry fertilizer innovation has encouraged the emergence of local business opportunities based on fishery waste. This waste-management model is expected to contribute to reducing coastal pollution and supporting environmentally friendly agricultural development in Gorontalo. The program effectively strengthened the community’s capacity in processing organic waste, and the dry fertilizer innovation has strong potential as a sustainable waste-management solution.
