Abstract

Snakehead fish (Channa striata) is a natural source of albumin that plays a vital role in wound healing and post-operative recovery. Despite its high nutritional potential, its utilization in Hanura Village, Teluk Pandan District, Pesawaran Regency, Lampung, Indonesia, remains limited. The main challenges include its strong fishy odor and the lack of product innovation. This condition highlights the need for developing more innovative and acceptable snakehead fish-based products. To address this issue, the community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of local partners in producing snakehead fish albumin capsules through training in manufacturing, packaging, and marketing. The program employed a modified extractor and a freeze-drying method to obtain high-quality albumin extract. It also included education on efficient and simple extraction procedures and training on capsule production processes that can be easily implemented by the community. The program successfully designed and developed a modified extractor unit for albumin extraction. The extraction process produced 500 mL of liquid albumin with a yield of 27.37%, which was subsequently freeze-dried into 35.70 g of yellow albumin powder with a distinctive odor. The Biuret test yielded positive results, indicated by a color change to purple, while heating at 90 ºC caused coagulation, confirming the presence of albumin. The training involved 20 participants and resulted in a significant improvement in understanding, with average scores increasing by 71.7%, from 32.8 to 80.5. Overall, the program successfully improved participants’ knowledge and skills in producing snakehead fish albumin capsules and promoted the sustainable utilization of local resources in Hanura Village.

Abstract

The village of Gading Rejo Utara, located in the Gading Rejo Subdistrict, is characterized by widespread agricultural land use, supported by naturally fertile soil conditions. A significant issue in the community is the improper management of wastewater generated from local, small-scale tofu production. This environmental challenge is directly linked to the limited availability of agricultural fertilizers. The community's primary fertilizer sources are government-subsidized products and animal manure, indicating a gap in local, sustainable production. This training initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of the 'Mandiri' Women Farmers Group (KWT) members in Gading Rejo Utara Village. The project focused on utilizing local resources, specifically tofu wastewater and abundant bamboo, for the production of biofertilizer. A total of 15 KWT 'Mandiri' members participated in the activity. The methodology employed was a participatory approach, comprising several stages: 1) initial observation to identify village resources; 2) a preparatory phase involving practical training on bamboo root bioactivator production; 3) implementation, which included knowledge- sharing discussions and a demonstration of organic fertilizer production using bamboo roots; and 4) monitoring and evaluation. Evaluation results indicated a significant increase in participant knowledge (60%), attitude (82.4%), and skills (81.78%). In conclusion, this community service intervention successfully enhanced the KWT members' knowledge regarding the potential of tofu wastewater for organic fertilizer production. It also fostered increased motivation among participants to independently produce organic fertilizer.

Abstract

Abstract

Bosa Village is categorized as a 3T priority area (Frontier, Outermost, and Disadvantaged), resulting in a lack of dental health facilities and limited public knowledge regarding the dangers of dental caries, as well as a lack of understanding of utilizing plants for disease prevention. Shredded green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) are a widely available commercial product that can be utilized for dental caries prevention due to their antibacterial properties. Therefore, the objective of this community service is to educate the public on dental caries prevention, specifically through the formulation of mouthwash from steeped green tea leaves to enhance knowledge of dental health maintenance using accessible products. The method employed was the lecture method, complemented by the distribution of brochures. This was followed by a recall of the material through a Q&A session. The results showed a significant improvement in the participants' competence between the pre-test and post-test. Although participants initially lacked understanding in several aspects, there was a substantial increase in comprehension following the post-test. This improvement was evident after the community of Bosa, Hamlet II, received education on utilizing green tea leaves as a mouthwash for dental caries prevention. Consequently, the community has begun to understand the prevention and maintenance of oral health, including the use of shredded green tea leaves as an anti-caries mouthwash.

Abstract

Penujak Village, located in Central Lombok Regency, is known as the oldest pottery production center on Lombok Island. Supported by skilled and experienced artisans, Penujak pottery is recognized for its high artistic value and serves as a symbol of local cultural identity. However, the production process still relies on manual techniques that are time-consuming, resulting in low productivity, inconsistent shapes, and unstable quality. Therefore, a sustainable development strategy is required. The purpose of this program is to introduce innovations through the use of the Automatic Pottery Wheel and Electric Spray Gun to improve the efficiency, quality, and production consistency without diminishing the artistic and traditional values of Penujak pottery. The activities were carried out through socialization and training sessions aimed at local artisans in Penujak Village. The implementation process consisted of three main stage: socialization, demonstration, and mentoring. The results of the program showed that the introduction of the Automatic Pottery Wheel and Electric Spray Gun had a significant impact on improving the efficiency and quality of pottery production. The time required to produce simple pottery items such as plates, which previously took around ten minutes manually, was reduced to only five minutes using the automatic tool, while maintaining better shape consistency. The Electric Spray Gun also produced more even coloring without covering the distinctive traditional motifs of Penujak pottery. Furthermore, this program successfully increased artisans’ motivation to continue innovating, enhanced product competitiveness, and fostered the growth of the local creative economy in Penujak Village. Thus, the program has successfully achieved its objectives. The Automatic Pottery Wheel proved effective in saving time through stable rotation that accelerates the shaping process, while the Electric Spray Gun produced smoother and more uniform coloring compared to manual methods.
