Abstract

This article examines the crocodile skin trade network that operated between Merauke the southernmost district of Dutch New Guinea (Nederlands Nieuw-Guinea) and Singapore as the principal entrepôt port of Southeast Asia during the Dutch colonial period, approximately from the early twentieth century until the territory's transfer to the United Nations in 1962. Drawing on Dutch colonial archives, marine biology reports, and international literature on the exotic skin trade, this article argues that the commodification of crocodile hides in Merauke constituted part of a broader system of natural resource exploitation linking colonial peripheries in Papua to European luxury markets via Singapore as a redistributive node. The Dutch trading company IMEX (Import en Export Maatschappij) emerged as a key actor integrating local hunters of the Marind-anim and Asmat peoples into global commodity chains. The article further demonstrates that large-scale unregulated hunting imposed serious ecological pressure on saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) populations in the region, planting the seeds of conservation discourse that emerged at the twilight of the colonial era.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), as the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, currently face demands for management transformation in order to remain relevant to contemporary developments without losing their distinctive Islamic and traditional identity. This article aims to examine how visionary leadership contributes to the transformation of pesantren management, covering vision formulation, institutional restructuring, human resource development, digitalization, and organizational culture strengthening. This study employs a qualitative library research method, reviewing and synthesizing thirty-three prior studies published between 2018 and 2025, analyzed using content analysis based on three thematic categories. The findings indicate that the kiai's visionary leadership functions as a direction setter, change agent, spokesperson, and role model in realizing a more professional, transparent, and accountable transformation of pesantren management, while still preserving its Islamic and traditional values. The implication of this study is the importance of sustainable regeneration of visionary leadership so that pesantren can survive and thrive amid the dynamics of the digital era.

Abstract

Industrial Work Practice (PKL) is a core component of vocational education aimed at improving learners’ work readiness through learning experiences in the industrial world. However, previous studies have typically assessed Industrial Work Practice in isolation, focusing on participant satisfaction, competency gains, or graduate employment without offering a comprehensive evaluation across all levels of Kirkpatrick’s framework. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Industrial Work Practice in the Motorcycle Engineering Skill Program at Vocational Schools using the Kirkpatrick Four-Level Evaluation Model. The study used a qualitative approach with a multi-case study design at two Vocational Schools in Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, structured observation, and document analysis involving alumni, supervising teachers, industry supervisors, workshop heads, and school management. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, while data validity was ensured through triangulation, member checking, and peer debriefing. The findings reveal that Industrial Work Practice is effective at all four levels of Kirkpatrick evaluation. The program provides authentic learning experiences that improve technical and professional competence, encourage behavioral change in the form of increased discipline, responsibility, and communication skills, and strengthen school-industry partnerships and graduate work readiness. Nevertheless, the evaluation system and feedback mechanism for Industrial Work Practice are still not optimally structured. This study’s novelty lies in the comprehensive application of the Kirkpatrick Evaluation Model through a qualitative multi-case approach, producing empirical evidence that supports the development of the Industrial Work Practice evaluation system and the strengthening of school-industry partnerships in vocational education.

Abstract

The Moving Class System is one of the learning environment innovations that has the potential to improve the quality of learning in Vocational High Schools (SMK), but its implementation in the context of vocational education in Indonesia has not been comprehensively studied. This study aims to analyze the planning process, implementation, supporting and inhibiting factors, and the impact of Moving Class implementation on student learning motivation, teacher professionalism, and facilities and infrastructure management. The study used a qualitative multi-site case study approach at two SMKs in East Java, namely SMK Islam 2 Wlingi and SMK Unggulan NU Mojoagung. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 22 participants, observation, and document analysis, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman through within-site and cross-site analysis. The results identified four main themes, namely system planning, Moving Class implementation, supporting and inhibiting factors, and their impact on students, teachers, and institutions. Moving Class implementation was proven to increase student learning motivation, strengthen teacher professionalism, and optimize the use and management of school facilities and infrastructure when supported by strong leadership and integrated planning. The novelty of this study lies in the Integrated Moving Class Management Model (IMCM), which combines strategic leadership, integrated planning, dynamic implementation, and pedagogical as well as institutional outcomes in vocational education. These findings provide practical implications as a reference for schools and policy makers in designing more systematic Moving Class implementation to improve the quality of learning and the effectiveness of vocational education management

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Islamic political awareness of Generation Z students specifically those from the Faculty of Ushuluddin and Islamic Studies at UIN North Sumatra in the era of digital democracy. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling, the study selected informants based on specific criteria, active Generation Z status, experience accessing political information via digital media, and prior involvement in campus political discussions or activities. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, limited participant observation, and documentation of digital activities, then analyzed using an interactive model involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the students' Islamic political awareness tends to be normative and symbolic rather than fully developed at a critically reflective level. While social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and X serve as primary sources for shaping political perceptions, limited digital political literacy renders students vulnerable to the simplification of discourse and polarization. Political participation manifests predominantly through digital expressions such as likes, shares, and comments rather than through substantive deliberative engagement in academic forums. These findings highlight a gap between the ideals of Islamic political values and the practice of digital democracy among Generation Z; consequently, there is a need to strengthen critical and integrative Islamic political literacy within Islamic higher education.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of students' understanding in Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh) learning, as reflected in limited classroom participation, low enthusiasm in responding to teachers' questions, and difficulties in comprehending learning materials. These challenges highlight the need for innovative instructional strategies capable of creating a more engaging, interactive, and student-centered learning environment through the integration of interactive digital quizzes. This study aims to describe the implementation of interactive digital quizzes as an instructional innovation in Fiqh learning to enhance students' understanding and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors influencing their implementation at Mauidzul Amin Islamic Junior High School, Pamekasan, Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving the school principal, Fiqh teacher, and students. The collected data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data credibility was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that interactive digital quizzes improved students' classroom participation, learning enthusiasm, and conceptual understanding of Fiqh. Supporting factors included students' learning motivation, teachers' pedagogical competence, and adequate digital facilities. However, implementation was constrained by unstable internet connectivity, limited digital devices, and varying levels of students' digital literacy. Overall, interactive digital quizzes represent an effective innovation for improving Fiqh learning outcomes.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health issue that affects not only physical health but also generates social challenges in the form of stigma toward patients and their families. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of social stigma experienced by tuberculosis patients and their family members in Medan City, Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was employed to explore the lived experiences and meanings attributed by the participants. Data were collected through in depth interviews with TB patients, their family members, and healthcare workers involved in TB management. The findings reveal that stigma against TB patients remains prevalent within the community. The identified forms of stigma include social exclusion, discriminatory treatment, negative labeling, and fear of disease transmission. In addition, family members experience secondary stigma, reflected in changes in community attitudes and feelings of shame when a relative's TB status becomes publicly known. Such stigma adversely affects patients' psychological wellbeing, leading to reduced self confidence, social withdrawal, and reluctance to disclose their illness. Conversely, family support plays a significant role in strengthening patients' motivation to adhere to treatment and cope with social pressures. The study further demonstrates that stigma is shaped by social interactions and inadequate public knowledge of tuberculosis. Therefore, continuous health education, strengthened social support, and the implementation of more inclusive approaches to TB care are essential to reducing stigma and improving the well being of individuals affected by tuberculosis

Abstract

This study aims to reduce depression levels among female college students from broken homes through the application of cognitive behavioral therapy. This study used a single-case experimental design. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling—three female college students from broken homes who were diagnosed with severe depression based on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II). Data analysis in this study was conducted using data triangulation, which involved comparing increases or decreases in depression scores at the beginning and end of therapy sessions, supplemented by interviews and observations of the subjects regarding changes observed in each therapy session. The results indicate an improvement in the psychological condition of all three participants, marked by a reduction in depression levels from the severe category to the mild category. Qualitatively, positive changes were observed, characterized by the emergence of realistic thinking, more stable emotions, and more productive behavior. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the application of cognitive-behavioral therapy can help reduce depression levels in female college students from broken homes
