Abstract

Listening is a critical ability to have, not only because of the time it takes in interactions but also because of its role in daily life. This study has been designed to explore the use of digital audio in promoting listening proficiency. Further research is required to determine how this position affects speakers of Indonesian who are learning English as a foreign language (EFL). A comparative study served as the foundation for this study's design. In this study, the research participants were at the upper secondary level, and their listening ability was examined in relation to the effects of digital audio (online podcasting on Spotify). Sixty students were involved in the study based on their performance on the placement test. Findings from the post-test showed that the group exposed to digital audio experienced an increase in their listening proficiency level, while the group not exposed to digital audio showed a little improvement in their proficiency level. By looking at the N-gain of their results, the group whose participants were not taught using active listening had an N-gain of 0.62, while the improvement of the second group resulted in an N-gain of 0.76, indicating that the group increased their listening proficiency level. The findings of this study showed that, with a result of 0.0235, there was no significant difference between the two teaching groups, where the significant value was greater than 0.005. claiming that while there is some difference between the two methods, it is not very much, and that both improve listening skills.

Abstract

The aim of this study to know students’ perception of Google Translate as Media for Translating English Descriptive Text at Fifth Semester of English Department Nommensen HKBP University. Questionnaires which formulated in google form are formulated as instrument to collect students’ responds on the usage of google translate in translating source to target. The questionnaire sheet consists of twelve questions about students’ perception of Google Translate as media for translating English descriptive text. The source of data in this study was taken by the fifth-semester student of English Department. There are twenty students have been filled the questionnaire sheet. This study was applied a descriptive qualitative design. The findings from the data analysis, Students have different positive and negative perception about Google Translate as media for translating English descriptive text. Students really like using Google translate as media for translating English descriptive text because make students easier. Students can translate text faster than open a dictionary. Google translate help students improve vocabulary with good intonation. They feel happy because it is easier to use but Google translate incorrect to translate in level of sentence. Based on their perceptions state that Google translate can be used as an alternative ways in teaching and learning activities.

Abstract

Nowadays supporting in communication ways in easier by Electronics many applications using to communication as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Line and others. The development of era has been influence in communication and interaction way. Many of slang word used in communication in verbal, orally or written. Slang is one of effect of social life in language it is part of language variety which are informal which used to communication as members in social community. With slang people used, is one indicating people are modern and impressive. Objectives of this Research is gives points about Sociolinguistics Slang Word; using on Social Media especially in WhatApp Application. From these article wish we found what kinds of Slang word used on WhatsApp Media. Method used in this research is qualitative method to analyze data. Data obtained came from WhatsApp Application that used teenagers in Author WhatsApp Group. For collecting the data, Author used the method of observation. Author found some slang words that using teenagers in popular slang as : “Jelly” meaning Jealous, “Swag” means Cool, “Y” means why, “Zzz” Means Sleeping, “Imo” means In my opinion and others.

Abstract

As the last stage of language learning, many students have difficulty mastering writing skills. Likewise, at SMPN 1 Tembuku where the eighth-grade students in the second semester have problems in writing, especially writing recount text. Thus, Picture Word Inductive Model can be used as an alternative strategy in teaching writing and overcome the difficulties mentioned to explore whether applying PWIM has an effect on students’ skill in writing recount text. A quasi-experimental with posttest only control group design was used as the research design. The result of data analysis showed that the experimental group mean score was 76.09, while the control group mean score was 72.25. It showed that the mean score of experimental group was higher than the mean score in control group as well as the effect size calculation was in medium category with the result 0.651. Thus, there was significant effect of using Picture Word Inductive Model on students’ skill in writing recount text. PWIM helped students in writing process and make students easier generate their ideas well into writing. Therefore, it was suggested to use PWIM as an alternative strategy in teaching writing.

Abstract

The rapid development of the times can lead to a lack of understanding of culture. A lack of understanding of a culture can lead to a lack of understanding of the message conveyed by a work of art. One of the cultures in Indonesia is batik. Batik is the result of a touch of art and technology. Likewise, the Riau Islands have batik, that is Gonggong batik. Therefore, this study has the objective of knowing the signifier, signified, denotative and connotative meanings of the five Gonggong (Strombus Canurium) batik themes created by Mr Yuspiq. In this study using qualitative descriptive research methods with Roland Barthes semiology analisis approach. The results of this study indicate that the denotative meaning of Gonggong is an icon of the Riau Islands. The connotative meaning is to describe Malay community leaders as having courage, religion, social spirit, harmony, sincerity, and humility in facing life

Abstract

This study attempts to examine the many linguistic idioms employed in English-language commercial and coke advertisements on the internet. By gathering five coke advertisements from the internet and using them as documentation, this research employed a qualitative descriptive methodology. Data condensing, data visualization, and conclusion/verification drawing are some of the data analysis techniques employed. As a result of this research, the researcher discovered three language styles used in analyzing the data: comparison, problem solution, hard sell, soft sell, lecture and drama, straightforward style, demonstration, and slice of life. The researchers also discovered three language styles used in coke product advertisements comparison, problem solution, hard sell.

Abstract

Professional Development Program (PDP) is essential for effective education, especially for teachers. Teachers' participation in PDP can improve their skills in many aspects, such as instructional strategy practice, performance, and teaching behaviour. This study aimed to determine whether or not there is a significant effect of EFL teachers' participation in PDP on their teaching behaviour. There were 101 EFL teachers who were involved in the study. The data were collected by using Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) questionnaire from Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). This study showed that there is a significant effect of PDP on EFL teachers' teaching behaviour.

Abstract

Vocabulary is the words that has a meaning and used by people to communicate with other and it support skills in English, namely Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. In the reality, the students at the Eighth grade of SMP Swasta Idanoi had a problem in vocabulary that effected in their Writing skill, namely: students were not able to know the English words and uses, students were not able to recognize the translation words and difficulties in memorizing the long syllable and unfamiliar words. Based on the problem, this research aimed to overcome the problem by using Bingo game. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) that consists of Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. The result of the research in cycle I showed there were 13 students did not pass the MCC of 21 students and the average of students’ mark was 63. The lowest score was 10 and the highest was 90. In the cycle II, all the students passed the MCC with the average of students’ mark was 93,33 with the lowest score was 80 and the highest score was 100. The researcher concluded Bingo game improved students’ vocabulary and overcome the students’ problem in this research.

Abstract

This study attempt to discuss student’s difficulties use transition signals when writing descriptive paragraph of SMP Gajah Mada Medan sophomores. The subject of the research is to know the types of transition signals that are difficult for the students to use in writing descriptive paragraphs. The researcher wants to discover the dominant types of transitional signs that are difficult for students to use when writing descriptive paragraphs. The population for the research was 18 second-years SMP Gajah Mada Medan students. The study used descriptive qualitative research. The result of the research showed that there were four types of students’ difficulties in using transition cues when writing descriptive paragraphs, namely: additional idea, opposite idea or contrast, example and cause effect. The dominant type of transition signals that are difficult for students to use when writing descriptive paragraphs was cause and effect with 9 cases (33,3%). This thesis is suggested to students and teachers of the English department as a source of valuable knowledge and information on students’ difficulties in using transition signals.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a skill that refers to a high level of proficiency in processing words in a language. The students at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli lacked vocabulary mastery, so they found it difficulty to understand texts properly and did not achieve the minimum competency criteria (MMC) that has been set at school. The purpose of this study was to improve the students' ability to vocabulary mastery. In improving students' vocabulary mastery, the researcher used Word Cloud and applied it in Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was conducted in Cycle II, there were four steps in conducting research, namely: planning, action, observation and reflection. . In Cycle I, there was no student who was classified in "very good level", there were two students (5.72%) in "good level". Instead of that, there were 19 students (54.28%) in "fair level", 14 students (40%) in "poor level". In addition, the average of the students' mark was 53.00. The results show that many students were at enough and less levels so it really needed to be improved in the next cycle. In Cycle II, there was 1 student (2.86 ) in “poor level”, there were 7 students (20%) in “fair level”, there were 6 students (17.14%) in “good level”, and 22 students ( 62.86 % ) in “very good level”. In addition, the average of the students' mark was 86.42. The students' average mark was higher than the MMC that was 75. Based on the explanation above, it is concluded that the Word Cloud can improve the students' vocabulary mastery at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023.
