Abstract

Abstract This research aimed to find a way to improve writing skills through mind mapping. This study was conducted in three cycles following the procedures for action research, namely planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. This research used pre experimental research consisting of two cycles, and each cycle consisted of two sessions. Besides, the research was preceded by an initial reflection to know the subjects' pre-existing ability in the pre-cycle. The whole process of the present study consisted of three main phases: pre-cycle, cycle I, and cycle II, in which each cycle consisted of four interconnected activities: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The researcher used a pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire to analyse the significant improvement. The researcher used statistics using the main score formula to analyse the data. The finding shows that the mean post-test score is higher (87) than the pre-test score (70). Based on these results of the post-test, the questionnaire result showed positive responses from the subjects toward implementing the mind mapping technique. In other words, this study establishes that 8th-grade students' writing ability in SMPN 3 Abiansemal, Badung, Bali could be enhanced by her mind mapping technique. Abstract

Filial Piety is a value rooted form Confucianism. This value demands one to respect parents. As this value spreads widely in East Asia, this study aims to investigate what filial piety values contained in Doraemon and Kobo Chan, and to examine which same filial piety values shared in both comic books. Doraemon and Kobo Chan are chosen since these two comic books are originated from Japan whose society adopts filial piety. These two comic books are important to be studied since the two were highly popular in Indonesia in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and were enjoyed by many Indonesian children. This study found that acquiescent respect and care respect are two values having the highest numbers of appearances in Doraemon and Kobo Chan, respectively. While the values contained in both comic books are acquiescent respect and respecting the ancestors. It is hoped that future studies could examine the relation between these values contained in both comic books and Indonesia’s young generation’s decision to take a role as a sandwich generation.

Abstract

Answering questions is considered more popular than asking questions. Socratic questioning is a method of learning by conversation or discussion where students are faced with some eccentric problems that create a series of questions. This research uses a qualitative descriptive design by collecting data from documents, observations and interviews. Then the data is analyzed using qualitative data analysis. Miles and Huberman show the theory about collecting data analysis which includes data collection, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. In Socratic Method develops the expansion of cognitive and analytical abilities, Socratic method could be an appropriate way to teach English. This method involves asking questions in a way that allows everyone to share ideas and also helps to create a positive environment for learning. Questioning where the types of questions most widely used by students are questions that explore information, reasons, evidence, and causes. Questions for clarification appeared. Questions about viewpoints and perspectives appear, followed by questions that explore assumptions, questions about questions and the least common question is questions about implications/consequences. As a way to train critical thinking skills, speaking and critical thinking skills are very important in the learning process that requires both skills and analytical process while students have lack of grammar and vocabulary, facts and evidence. How to make students enjoy learning speaking that would be a challenge for the writer when he taught at senior high school students' of Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Fath. Another thing the result of the research: theoretically could become a new way in practicing speaking by using Socratic Method especially for critical thinking skills in English.

Abstract

Academic writing has always been one of the hardest skills to develop as it requires mastery of the language. With the unforeseen pandemic, developing the said skills of the learners in this generation has become harder as new modes of instruction that are unfamiliar to both teachers and students emerge. With that, the main focus of this study is to identify the types and frequency of errors the students commit in writing academic papers in an attempt to provide the best possible interventions to remediate them. To achieve these objectives, 15 position papers were collected and analyzed. Error analysis designed by Gass and Selinker in 2008 was applied. In the end, results have been tabulated in descending sequence in which grammar appeared as the most frequent error. Strategies, such as the use of AI in checking grammar, and interventions, such as giving feedback and drafting, are recommended.

Abstract

Abstract In the educational realm, all stakeholders must take part in the overall well-being of students, regardless of their age, economic status, abilities, and individual uniqueness. Teachers are at the forefront of keeping the process going; parents are on the side, especially when supplemental assistance must be provided to the learners. This study aimed to understand home follow-ups in support of classroom-based remediation in enhancing reading comprehension skills through the lived experiences of five parents involved in their child’s learning. The study was anchored on the data gathered through a semi-structured interview to deeply understand the parents’ side on this topic. Through an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis qualitative approach, the researchers divulged how parents’ involvement takes hold of their child’s performance in school. In this paper, five superordinate themes with corresponding sub-ordinate themes were determined: the spectrum of parents’ impressions on the idea of classroom-based remedial sessions; help given at home through follow-up sessions; reasons of parents for stepping up and taking extra actions; the difficulties and challenges encountered; and the essence of home follow-ups to the students’ holistic being. The experiences of parents revealed that home follow-ups positively impact the child, and this is a practice every parent must endeavor.

Abstract

This study examines how modern education uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to improve student engagement and speaking skills. This study emphasizes the importance of tailored learning experiences and the potential of AI to transform language learning in the context of Education 5.0. The research seeks to fill the gap in education literature by showing how AI-driven classroom talks can improve student engagement and speaking skills. The study carefully evaluates AI-facilitated speaking activities in primary and high schools using a qualitative research design. The research shows how AI transforms student learning, improving engagement and speaking competency through case studies. The findings suggest using AI to supplement instructors rather than replace them. The study also explores Education 5.0's theoretical foundations, showing how AI can be used to personalize education, use big data to improve education, and increase education quality. Future studies should examine AI's effects on other language skills and its application to varied student demographics. This research advances the discussion on AI and education, enabling more nuanced studies of technology-enhanced learning.
