Abstract

The transformation of Indonesian shophouses reveals a decisive rupture between the spatial intelligence of their colonial predecessors and the sealed, utilitarian forms that now dominate urban areas. Through a visual analysis comparing colonial photographic archives from Batavia, Bandung, and Makassar (1900–1930) with modern shophouse imagery (2020–2024), this study reveals that the defining features of colonial shophouses, such as arcades, transitional emperan, inner courts, cross-ventilation pathways, and layered spatial sequences, have been systematically erased. This disappearance reflects an aesthetic shift and the loss of an ecological and social logic that enabled these buildings to negotiate the tropical climate, urban density and street-level activity. The findings show that modern shophouse cannot be seen as a natural progression of the colonial shophouse, but rather as a typological departure that has abandoned the organic, climatic and socio-urban relationships that have historically shaped Indonesia's commercial streetscapes.

Abstract

The transformation of coastal areas in Indonesia is now at a critical point due to the acceleration of climate change that triggers sea level rise and the intensity of extreme hydrometeorological phenomena. As an archipelagic country with a coastline of more than 95,000 kilometers, Indonesia faces an existential challenge in protecting its coastal ecosystem from the threat of destructive abrasion. This study discusses the problem of coastal abrasion in Bonto Bahari District, especially in Sapolohe Village, which has eroded about 850 meters of coastline and threatened dozens of residents' homes and the livelihoods of coastal communities. Overlay analysis showed that Sapolohe had the highest level of abrasion risk (score 5.0), followed by Tanah Lemo (3.5) and Bira (3.0), while Benjala was classified as safe (score 0). The results of the Likert scale analysis show that the level of abrasion mitigation efforts is in the category of adequate (48.11%), with community knowledge (50.7%), the implementation of institutional programs (45%), and socio-cultural values (48.65%) still need to be improved. The mitigation efforts implemented include training, socialization, mangrove planting, and strengthening local socio-cultural values. A community participatory approach is considered important to create an effective and sustainable abrasion mitigation strategy in the coastal area of Bonto Bahari.

Abstract

This study examines the loss of Indische architecture in the port area of Makassar, tracing historical visual evidence and key records relating to Passerstraat, now known as Jalan Nusantara, and Wilhelminastraat. The analysis focuses on three documented buildings: De Javasche Bank, the Nederlandsche Handel Maatschappij and Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM) building. The method combines a historical reading with an analysis of the architectural elements of massing, façade composition, and openings, as observable in historical photographs. The findings suggest that the primary pattern of loss in the studied cases is the physical disappearance of buildings, which disrupts typological data and weakens the reconstruction of the Indische period in the port environment. By treating lost buildings as legitimate architectural evidence, this study provides a more accurate estimation of the extent of the loss, indicating that the Indische presence in Makassar historically extended beyond what is visually discernible today.

Abstract

The Leang-Leang Prehistoric Park is a cultural heritage tourism area with considerable archaeological and educational potential; however, its development is constrained by the limited quality of supporting tourism facilities. This study aims to analyze the availability and condition of tourism facilities as a basis for formulating development directions for the area. A mixed-method approach was applied by combining quantitative measurement using a Likert scale with qualitative descriptive analysis based on field observations, documentation, and limited interviews. Facility evaluation was conducted using five indicators: physical condition, functionality, cleanliness, comfort, and maintenance. The findings indicate that the tourism facility availability index reaches 60 percent, categorized as moderate. Facilities with the lowest scores include pedestrian pathways, worship facilities, gazebos, park benches, information centers, and souvenir shops, which negatively affect visitor comfort and experience quality. These results emphasize the need for targeted facility improvements through zoning arrangements, strengthening basic facilities, and implementing conservation-based tourism principles to support the sustainable development of the prehistoric tourism area.

Abstract

Antang Village, as part of Panakkukang District in Makassar City, is experiencing rapid development in the residential sector. This study aims to analyze the main factors that influence people's preferences in choosing housing locations in the region. The methods used include qualitative and quantitative analysis based on field data, literature studies, and document studies related to spatial planning and settlement development. The results of the study show that accessibility factors to the city center and public facilities, the availability of basic infrastructure (roads, drainage, electricity, and clean water), environmental security, affordable land prices, and land ownership certification are the main considerations of the community. In addition, the existence of planned housing such as Bukit Baruga also shapes the pattern of people's preferences for organized and exclusive housing. This study concludes that the preferences of the people in Antang Village are not only based on economic aspects, but also on social, environmental, and comfortable life aspects. These findings are expected to be input for developers and local governments in designing spatial policies and sustainable settlement development

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the thermal performance of fishermen's residential buildings through the integration of field measurement data with computer simulation modeling. This approach is carried out to identify microclimate variables, such as air temperature and humidity, in order to achieve adaptive thermal comfort standards for coastal communities. The data collection method was carried out for five consecutive days at the peak of the rainy season to map extreme microclimatic fluctuations in the coastal environment. The results of these measurements are then validated by software simulations to ensure the accuracy of the data to actual conditions in the field. Further analysis was carried out by evaluating the influence of building envelope materials on heat transmission to formulate effective heat mitigation strategies. This finding is expected to be a reference in the development of vernacular home design that is able to optimize air circulation and maintain the thermal stability of the interior passively. In addition, this study also examines the correlation between the orientation of the building and the direction of the sea breeze in increasing the effectiveness of natural ventilation in residential areas. This mapping of thermal characteristics provides in-depth insights into how design adjustments to architectural elements can significantly affect building performance in coastal areas with high humidity. The integration of this empirical data allows the development of thermal prediction algorithms that are specific to the typology of fishermen's habitation, so that it is able to provide targeted temperature mitigation design solutions for coastal tropical climates.

Abstract

The ideal area of Green Open Space (RTH) is at least 30% of the area of urban areas. However, in reality, the availability of Green Open Space inalmost all cities in Indonesia only reaches 10% of the area on average. The limited availability of Green Open Space and the uneven distributionand concentration of green open space at certain points in several areas result in unequal growth and development of the city and tend to be chaotic. This study aims to identify the availability of Green Open Space and to analyze the optimization of the distribution of green Open Spaceaccording to its type and function in Makassar City. This research was carried out in Makassar City by taking the study location in Banta-bantaeng Village, Rappocini District, Makassar City, with the research time starting from July 2016 to April 2017. The methods used in this studyare qualitative descriptive methods and quantitative descriptive methods. The qualitative descriptive method was used to identify the availabilityof the types and functions of Green Open Space while the quantitative descriptive method was used to describe the need and distribution of greenopen space in Makassar City through the calculation of simple mathematical formulas and projections of the number of population. The results ofthis study show that the availability of green open space in Makassar City, especially in Banta-bantaeng Village, has not met the standard of green open space needs reviewed from the area and the number of population. The results of this study also show that the distribution of open space hasnot been optimally distributed, among other things, due to the limited free space in several areas of Banta-bantaeng Village caused by denseresidential areas
