Abstract

Background Physical condition is a fundamental factor that influences the performance and skills of soccer players, particularly goalkeepers, whose position demands optimal speed, agility, and endurance. However, the lack of empirical data on the physical condition and skill profiles of goalkeepers at the professional club level remains a challenge in developing evidence-based training programs. Objectives This study aims to analyze the physical condition and skills of Persipura Jayapura’s goalkeepers and to provide a comprehensive overview of their physical ability levels as a basis for evaluating the athletes’ performance. Methods This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using a survey method that involved testing and measuring five goalkeepers as the total sample. Data were collected using the 50-meter run (speed), the Illinois Agility Run Test (agility), and the multistage fitness test (endurance), and were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of percentages and T-scores. Results The results of the study show that most goalkeepers fall into the “good” category in all components of physical fitness, with endurance being the most dominant component. No goalkeepers were found to be in the “poor” or “very poor” categories, although there were individual variations in speed and agility. Conclusions This study confirms that good physical condition contributes to a goalkeeper’s performance readiness and provides practical implications for coaches in designing training programs based on physical assessments. Theoretically, this study enriches the body of research on the physical condition profile of goalkeepers, a topic that remains underrepresented in sports literature.

Abstract

Background Volleyball is a sport taught in elementary schools and requires good basic techniques, one of which is the underhand pass. Mastering the underhand pass is crucial for success, so it is important to understand students’ proficiency in this technique, especially in extracurricular activities. Objectives This study aims to determine the basic technical ability in underhand passing in volleyball among elementary school students. Methods This study is a quantitative study using descriptive analysis. The population in this study consisted of all sixth-grade students at Muhammadiyah Aimas Elementary School for the 2025/2026 academic year, totaling 41 students. The sampling technique used was total sampling, meaning the entire population was sampled. The research instrument consisted of a test of basic underhand passing skills, while data analysis employed quantitative descriptive techniques. Results The results of the study show that of the 41 students who took the test, 15 students (37%) scored in the “very good” category (scores 10–12), 17 students (42%) were in the “fair/not very good” category (scores 8–9), 7 students (17%) were in the “poor” category (scores of 6–7), and 2 students (5%) were in the “very poor” category (scores of 4–5). Conclusion Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the basic underhand passing skills of extracurricular students at SD Muhammadiyah Aimas, Sorong Regency, generally fall into the “good” category. Therefore, more structured training is needed to improve their underhand passing skills.

Abstract

Background The link between smoking and athletic performance is important to consider, as many people who exercise still smoke. Smoking is thought to negatively impact health, while exercise requires optimal health and performance. Objectives This study aims to review the scientific literature regarding the relationship between smoking and sports performance. Methods A systematic literature review was conducted using the PubMed database following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The keyword “Smoking and Sports Performance” was used to identify relevant studies. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 that discussed smoking and sports performance were screened according to predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 15 articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Results The reviewed studies consistently showed that smoking negatively affects sports performance and physical fitness. Smokers demonstrated lower aerobic capacity (VO₂max), reduced cardiorespiratory fitness, decreased lung function, higher heart rates, slower recovery processes, and poorer physical fitness compared with non-smokers. Several studies also reported increased risks of hypertension, impaired cognitive function, and accelerated biological aging among smokers. Conversely, smoking cessation was associated with improvements in aerobic capacity, cardiovascular health, and overall physical fitness. Conclusion Smoking has a significant negative impact on sports performance and athlete health. The evidence indicates that avoiding or quitting smoking can improve physical fitness, aerobic capacity, and recovery, thereby supporting better athletic performance.
