Abstract

Background. The accuracy in timing the ratio of exercise to rest durations during interval training affects athletes’ performance and success in completing their training programs. Therefore, when designing a training program, a coach must ensure synchronization between training objectives and the application of training loads, such as exercise intensity. This study contributes new evidence regarding the relationship between work-to-rest ratio, training intensity, and interval training performance. Objective. This study aims to determine the level of achievement of a 100% intensity interval training program with a work-to-rest ratio of 1:¾. Method. This study used a survey to determine the level of achievement of the interval training program with a 1:¾ ratio. The research design was quantitative and descriptive, and the research instruments used were the Balke test to measure VO₂ max and interval training. The study population consisted of basketball athletes from the Central Java Student Sports Education and Training Center, with a sample size of nine athletes. Results. The results showed that 8 athletes achieved a 100% completion rate, 1 athlete achieved an 87% completion rate, and the average completion rate was 99%. Conclusion. Athletes were able to perform 400-meter interval training at 100% intensity with a training volume approaching twice the distance of the VO₂ max test; however, since each athlete has different physical conditions, the training must be adjusted to each athlete’s individual capabilities. The implications of this study for coaches are that it serves as a reference for developing measurable interval training programs to improve endurance, thereby preventing overtraining caused by excessively heavy training loads.

Abstract

Background. Compensatory training sessions (MD+1) play a critical role in football microcycle management, yet systematic comparisons with competitive match demands using metabolic power remain limited, and no such comparison has been reported in Bulgarian professional football. Objectives. The purpose of this retrospective observational pilot study was to compare the external load profiles of competitive matches and compensatory (MD+1) training sessions in a professional Bulgarian first-division football club, using average metabolic power (AMP) as the primary discriminant metric. Method. GPS data (Barin Sports PRO, 10 Hz) were retrospectively analyzed from two match–training session pairs: Match 1 (07.02.2025)/Training 1 (08.02.2025) and Match 2 (08.03.2025)/Training 2 (09.03.2025). Variables included total distance, AMP, sprint count, sprint distance, accelerations, decelerations, and top speed. Training-to-match ratios were expressed as percentages against a 50% adequacy criterion. Results. Total distance ratios were 85.7% and 88.2% (mean 86.9%); AMP ratios were 71.3% and 77.5% (mean 74.4%), both exceeding the 50% threshold. Sprint count reached only 43.2% of match values, and sprint distance 46.0%. Accelerations exceeded match values (112.9%), while decelerations reached 72.4%. Conclusion. Compensatory sessions replicated metabolic intensity adequately but revealed a persistent sprint-specific deficit. AMP demonstrated greater discriminant sensitivity than total distance for evaluating MD+1 session adequacy in professional football.

Abstract

Background. Physical education plays a vital role in promoting students’ physical and psychological well-being, yet it is often undervalued compared to other academic subjects. In many schools, physical education classes are placed at the end of the schedule or canceled to make room for completing the academic curriculum. Despite this, students often express enthusiasm and enjoyment during physical education sessions, reflecting a motivational climate that significantly influences their psychological engagement. Objectives. This study aimed to develop and implement a motivational climate scale for secondary school students in physical education lessons and to identify the level of motivational climate among students in traditional and applied lessons based on the variables of age and educational environment. Method. A descriptive design with a survey and correlational approach was used. The study involved female secondary school students aged 14–17 years in Nasiriyah city and the Ur district during the 2023–2024 academic year, with a total population of 7,972 students from 87 schools. Results. The results indicated that the four groups under study (urban and rural areas) achieved significant differences in both traditional and practical lessons, with higher scores observed in practical lessons, supporting the validity of the motivational climate scale. Conclusion. The motivational climate was found to be higher among urban female students compared to rural students, and among fifth-grade students compared to second-grade students, due to environmental factors and sociocultural traditions affecting motivation.

Abstract

Background. The main problem in this study is the lack of adequate Physical Education (PE) teaching materials for Phase F that are aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum learning outcomes. This limitation results in learning that is not student-centered, and teachers struggle to provide independent guidance that is appropriate for the school’s available facilities and infrastructure. Objectives. The objective of this study is to develop valid, practical, and effective Phase F Physical Education teaching materials for the Merdeka Curriculum at State Senior High School 4 Malang. Method. This study employed the R&D model based on the Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate (ADDIE) framework. Data collection involved direct observation, interviews, and questionnaires, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques. Results. Validation results from subject matter experts yielded a score of 92% and from media experts, 94%, indicating that the textbook is highly valid in terms of content, presentation, and visual design. Additionally, the small-group pilot test yielded a percentage of 83.8% (categorized as “highly suitable/practical”), and the large-group pilot test yielded 88.2% (categorized as “highly suitable/effective”). Conclusion. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the Physical Education textbook is highly suitable, practical, and effective for use in learning activities. This textbook, which contains four chapters of content, visual images, integrated QR codes, and Student Activity Sheets (SAS), makes a significant contribution to facilitating differentiated learning and supporting students’ independence in movement literacy in accordance with the philosophy of modern physical education.

Abstract

Background. Athlete development at basketball academies requires professional coaching and management to support the gradual and sustainable improvement of athletes’ performance. In their operations, basketball academies still face challenges such as unstructured training programs, limited facilities, and inadequate financial management. Objectives. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of coaching management and financial management on athlete development at the Cirebon Region III basketball academy and to identify the management obstacles and solutions encountered in the development process. Method. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with a Sequential Explanatory design. Quantitative data were collected through a survey of 222 respondents and analyzed using multiple linear regression. Qualitative data were obtained through interviews and observations of 40 informants selected via purposive sampling. The analysis was conducted using SPSS 26. Results. The results of the quantitative data analysis using multiple linear regression in the “ANOVA” output yielded a Sig or p-value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating that coaching management and financial management simultaneously have a significant effect on athlete development. In the “Coefficients” output, the sig. value of 0.238 > the probability of 0.05, indicating that coaching management has no partial effect on athlete development, whereas the sig. value of 0.000 < the probability of 0.05 indicates that financial management has a partial effect on athlete development. The qualitative data reveals the main obstacles to be limited facilities, a lack of standardized training evaluations, dependence on athlete dues, and low funding transparency. Conclusion. It is concluded that the professionalization of coaching, standardization of evaluations, and diversification of funding are essential to achieving more effective and performance-oriented athlete development. This study contributes to the development of an athlete development model based on professional coaching management and sustainable financial management at the Cirebon Region III basketball academy.

Abstract

Background. Mental health problems and declining academic motivation are increasingly prevalent among college students, while evidence regarding the role of physical activity in supporting psychological well-being remains limited. Objectives. This study examined the influence of physical activity on college students’ mental health and academic motivation. Method. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from 199 college students using the DASS-21, Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), followed by semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, regression, and t-tests, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Results. Students reported low depression, moderate anxiety and stress, and high exercise motivation. Exercise motivation was significantly associated with lower psychological distress, whereas exercise frequency and duration did not significantly predict stress levels. Qualitative findings highlighted the importance of personal relevance, autonomy, and social support in maintaining physical activity and promoting psychological well-being. Conclusion. Exercise motivation plays a more important protective role than activity volume alone in supporting college students’ mental health and academic motivation. These findings provide evidence for developing person-centered physical activity programs in higher education.
