Abstract

Corn (Zea mays L.) is one of the leading food commodities in Indonesia whose availability is often not optimally met. The decline in productivity in agricultural land caused by pest attacks is a very damaging and detrimental factor. Biological control using biological agents in the form of entomopathogenic fungi is an alternative choice for controlling corn pests that is quite cheap but environmentally friendly so as to maintain the balance of the environmental agro-ecosystem. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of entomopathogenic fungi from exploration using the insect bait method in several lowland soil samples that have great potential as biological agents to control Spodoptera frugiperda pests that attack corn plants. The results of the study showed that the lowland soil samples of Tojan, Klungkung and Saba, Blahbatuh, Gianyar did not find symptoms of entomopathogenic fungi that infect the insect pest S. Frugiperda, while the lowland soil samples of Padanggalak, Sanur found symptoms of entomopathogenic fungi that infect the insect pest S. Frugiperda. The results of the pathogenicity test and macroscopic and microscopic identification showed that the characteristics of the isolates refer to the fungus Aspergillus flavus.

Abstract

A popular practice for weed management in soybean cultivation is the use of Siam weed (Chromolaena odorata L.) organic mulch and oxyfluorfen herbicide. This study aimed to determine the appropriate dose of Siam weed mulch and oxyfluorfen for effective weed suppression, improved growth, and yield of soybean. The experiment was conducted from July to September 2025 in Lawe Sagu Hulu Village, Lawe Bulan Subdistrict, Aceh Tenggara, Aceh, Indonesia. A non-factorial randomized block design (RBD) was employed with 12 treatments; D0:control; D1:12.5 organic mulch; D2:14.0; D3:15.5; D4:17.0; D5:18.5 t ha?¹; D6:300 oxyfluorfen herbicide; D7:500;  D8:700; D9:900; D10:1100 g a.i. ha?¹; and D11:continuous mechanical control, replicated four times. Experimental plots measured 2.5 × 2.5 m, with Siam weed mulch applied as 10 cm chopped biomass spread evenly on the soil surface, while oxyfluorfen was applied at 1 DAS. Observed variables included weed cover percentage, plant height, number of pods, and 100-seed weight. Results showed that Siam weed mulch at 17 t ha?¹ significantly increased soybean height at 20 and 30 DAS. Oxyfluorfen at 900 g a.i. Ha-¹ effectively reduced weed cover and decreased the number of pods per plant.

Abstract

Rice productivity is greatly influenced by the level of soil fertility, which is the main source of nutrients. Rice fields in Soa District, Ngada Regency, consist of irrigated and rain-fed rice fields managed differently. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers without the addition of organic matter is feared to reduce soil quality, so a study is needed to determine the status of soil fertility in both types of land. The study was conducted through a field survey with soil sampling at six locations, three each in irrigated rice fields and three in rain-fed rice fields. At each location, five sample points were taken using the diagonal method at a depth of 0–20 cm. Samples were analyzed at the Soil Chemistry Laboratory of Nusa Cendana University to determine pH, Organic Carbon, Total Nitrogen, Available Phosphate, Available Potassium, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), and Base Saturation (BCC). The analyzed data were then evaluated using the matching method and t-test to see differences between land types. The analysis results showed that the irrigated land is classified as fertile to very fertile with high P and K content, very high CEC and BCC values, and medium Organic Carbon. In contrast, rainfed land showed varying fertility levels from low to high, with the main constraints being low organic carbon, phosphorus, and potassium. The t-test showed no statistically significant differences, but agronomically, the differences between locations were quite clear. This study emphasizes the importance of adding organic matter and implementing balanced fertilization, especially in rainfed land, to maintain nutrient availability and support sustainable rice production.

Abstract

Paddy fields with high agricultural activities greatly affect their quality. The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical properties and quality of paddy fields in Reroja Village. This study used an exploratory method. Soil samples were taken from paddy fields with three rice varieties, namely Inpari, Ciherang, and IR. The variables observed were soil pH, CEC, Organic C, Total N, Total P, Total K, and wet saturation. The criteria used in determining the location were paddy fields with an area of ??1 ha and cultivated rice varieties Ciherang, IR, and Inpari. The variables that had been analyzed were then determined for soil chemistry and soil quality criteria based on the Lowery scoring method. The results of the study showed that the pH of the rice field soil in Reroja Village was acidic with a pH value of 4.48 to 4.98, CEC was classified as high with a value range of 40.11 to 40.93, C-organic was classified as low with a value of 0.78 to 1.80, N-total was categorized as low with an inpari value of 0.08 to 0.15, P-available was categorized as medium and low with an inpari value of 30.10, 5.67 to 30.10, K-available was categorized as high with a value of 79.56 to 86.47, base saturation was categorized as high with a value of 87.90 to 88.11. The quality of the rice field soil in Reroja Village was said to be unhealthy, with a value of 1.7 to 2.0.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the damage caused by Spodoptera frugiperda to maize crops in East Nusa Tenggara (NT1T). The study was conducted on three islands, namely Timor, Flores, and Sumba. The observation method used was the Scouting system. Samples were taken using a ‘W’ pattern approach. The percentage of infested plants was analysed by dividing the total number of infested plants by the number of plants observed and multiplying by 100%. Meanwhile, the intensity of infestation was calculated using the formula ? (ni x vi)/(NxV) x 100%. The results showed that the average S. frugiperda infestation on maize plants across all observation sites was 100%. The percentage of infested plants at all locations indicated that S. frugiperda had spread evenly throughout East Nusa Tenggara. Meanwhile, the highest average intensity of S. frugiperda attacks was in Tuatuka village at 83.52% and the lowest was in Wolofeo village at 22.11%. Affected corn plants showed characteristic symptoms, namely holes and transparency in the leaves, and larvae were found in the leaves and stems with sawdust-like traces of their gnawing.
