Journal of Research on English and Language Learning (J-REaLL) with ISSN numbers 2721-5016 (online) and 2721-5024 (printed) is an international journal that is published twice a year in the months of February and August. The aim of this journal is to promote a principled approach to research on English Language Teaching and Learning-related concerns by encouraging inquiry into the relationship between theoretical and practical studies. The journal welcomes contributions in the areas of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), Teaching English as a Second and Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL), English Language Testing and Assessment, Curriculum and Development, Linguistics, Translation, ICT-based Learning, Teaching English for Your Learners (TEYL), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), English Language Teaching and Learning (ELT), Teachers’ Training and Education in ELT, and Review Papers (Scoping/Systematic Literature Review (SLR)/Bibliometrics). Journal of Research on English and Language Learning (J-REaLL) has been publishing the articles since February 2020 precisely since the release of Volume 1, Number 1, 2020. Journal of Research on English and Language Learning (J-REaLL) has been accredited by Science and Technology Index (SINTA-4) since December 7th, 2022 (from Vol. 1 No. 2 up to Vol. 6 No. 1). Journal of Research on English and Language Learning (J-REaLL) is indexed in the database Google Scholar, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Indonesia One Search, Garba Rujukan Digital (Garuda), Ministry of Religious Affairs Reference (Moraref), Scilit, WorldCat, Crossref, Dimensions, Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE), Public Knowledge Project (PKP|Index), Every submitted manuscript will be read by the editorial team. Manuscripts that are evaluated by editors and deemed not in accordance with the criteria of the journal will be rejected without external review. Then, a manuscript that has a special interest to readers is sent to peer reviewers, with two (2) different reviewers for each article by using the double-blind system. After reviewing the manuscript, it will be returned to the author for the revision process. In this journal, we have forty-one (41) reviewers. The editorial team makes decisions based on reviewers’ recommendations. The Editorial Board invites the authors to submit the best manuscripts to be published in this journal.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the challenges Islamic high school students faced in speaking English, focusing on the different levels of speaking ability among students. Using a qualitative approach and narrative research design, the study involved three students with different speaking abilities (high, medium, and low) selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews which took around 10 minutes for each student that revealed various internal and external factors affecting students' speaking ability. The results showed that students faced various difficulties, including lack of confidence, nervousness, vocabulary, limited access to resources, and peer support. In addition, an educational environment that emphasizes religious learning reduces students' opportunities to practice English. Nonetheless, students also developed strategies to overcome these challenges, such as increasing self-confidence and finding study buddies. The findings provide important insights for educators and researchers to design more effective interventions to improve English speaking skills among students of different ability levels. This study is believed to highly contribute to both students and teachers in practice and teaching and as a reference for the future researchers.

Abstract

Learning outcomes are significantly and positively influenced by students’ interest in learning. This means that students will learn more effectively if they are more interested and satisfied with what they are learning. Unfortunately, the issue of students' lack of interest in learning English has not been thoroughly studied yet. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find out the aspects that cause students' lack of interest in English lessons. A survey design was used with tenth grade students of a high school in Malang, Indonesia, as the subjects, using 14 sets of items in the questionnaire as the research instrument to obtain the data. The data were verified through interviews to confirm their consistency with the questionnaire result. The data were analyzed and displayed using percentages. The findings show that, on average, from the teacher’s side, the students’ lack of interest in English lessons were mostly due to the teacher’s materials and methods of teaching and personal relationship with the students. From the students’ side, most of their lack of interest is due to their own unreadiness to learn English. These findings suggest that teachers should improve their teaching methods, materials, and student engagement strategies to enhance students’ interest in learning English and achieve better learning outcomes.

Abstract

The era of globalization that is increasingly rapid requires someone to have English language skills, especially in vocational education where language skills have a direct impact on students' work abilities. Although many studies have explored motivation in learning English, few have specifically examined differences across departments. This study identifies factors influencing English learning motivation among 11th-grade students from various departments with a total of 208 participants from accounting, marketing, visual communication design, and office management at a vocational school in Surakarta, Indonesia. This quantitative study employed stratified random sampling; this study used a structured questionnaire based on the motivation strategy for learning (MSLQ). Data analysis used descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results of the study showed statistically significant variations in English learning motivation across all majors, with a P-value of 0.000 from the accounting department showing the highest motivation with an average of 4.24 and the marketing department showing the lowest average of 3.68. These findings indicate that career relevance, learning environment, teaching methods, and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can significantly influence students' English learning attitudes. This research contributes to understanding the complex dynamics of motivation in vocational education and provides insights for developing targeted English language education strategies that are in line with student's professional aspirations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of presuppositions and implied meanings that create jokes in Jim Gaffigan's stand-up comedy show, “30 Minutes of Jim Gaffigan: Quality Time - Stand Up Comedy,” uploaded to the Comedy Dynamics YouTube channel. This study uses a qualitative method. The data analyzed are Jim Gaffigan's jokes that contain presuppositions. The results show that there are 23 data points containing presuppositions in Jim Gaffigan's jokes, categorized into 7 existential presuppositions, 5 non-factive presuppositions, 4 lexical presuppositions, 4 counterfactual presuppositions, 2 factive presuppositions, and 1 structural presupposition. Based on the study result, the presupposition that is often used in Jim Gaffigan’s jokes is existential presupposition. In conclusion, presupposition not only functions as a communication tool but also as a means to foster social connections through laughter. The impact of using presupposition in comedy is that it creates a quick connection between the comedian and the audience, thus strengthening the effectiveness of the joke. Choosing the right type of presupposition, such as existential, can make it easier for the comedian to deliver accessible humor, while the use of an inappropriate presupposition, such as structural, can reduce the humorous effect as it requires more time to think.

Abstract

Translation plays a crucial role in facilitating communication among people who speak different languages. However, challenges arise in maintaining the acceptability or cultural relevance. Many previous studies have examined translation techniques and translation quality assessments, but few have specifically explored the acceptability of sentences containing religious terms in bilingual books. This research focuses on analyzing types of translation techniques and the translation acceptability in sentences containing religious terms in a bilingual book entitled Prophet Nuh AS. This research utilized translation quality assessment, focusing on the acceptability aspects. A qualitative descriptive method was employed in this research by using the documentation technique to collect the data. The findings show that there are 5 translation techniques used in the translation of sentences containing religious terms, which are established equivalent, modulation, literal translation, amplification, and reduction. The dominant technique is the literal translation technique, while the least is the reduction technique. In terms of translation quality assessment of the acceptability aspect, the calculation of the quality score shows that the translation is acceptable. This research has limitations, including its focus on a single book, which may not adequately represent the broader context of translation. Future research could extend the scope by examining multiple religious texts to gain deeper insights. The results of this study imply that it is important for translators to improve their skills in applying effective translation techniques, as well as pay attention to the acceptability of the readers.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore my experience as an English teacher and an English learner who is struggling to improve English proficiency in spoken and written communication. This study uses an autoethnographic approach to reconstruct barriers in learning English as well as how the English language helped the researcher to grow better as a teacher candidate. I present my teaching journey experience as pieces of information for this investigation. My teaching journey at various levels of education and in different conditions has formed a new self-identity in viewing and learning, which contributes to my English language skills. The study highlights three key findings: (1) self-awareness of English proficiency development, which examines my evolving understanding of my linguistic strengths and weaknesses; (2) experiential learning through teaching practices, which demonstrates how the act of teaching fosters deeper language acquisition; and (3) critical turning points in English language acquisition, which identifies pivotal moments that significantly influenced the progress of acquiring the language. The implication of this study emphasizes the importance of experiential learning and reflective teaching practices for English language educators. Limitations and suggestions are also addressed in this study.

Abstract

As the global gaming market grows, localizing video games has become essential to reaching international audiences. It is not just about translating words; it is also about preserving the emotions behind them. This is especially true for expressive speech acts, which convey feelings like gratitude, apology, or sorrow. While Indonesian-made games are gaining worldwide popularity, little is known about how well their delivery and translations capture the emotional depth of the original story. This study explores expressive speech acts in A Space for the Unbound, a popular Indonesian game with a growing global fan base. It also examines whether the Indonesian translation effectively conveys the emotions found in the original English text. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research compares English expressive speech acts from the game’s prologue and Chapter 1 to their Indonesian translations. The speech acts are categorized using a mix of expert models, and the translation is evaluated based on accuracy, readability, and acceptability. The findings reveal a high frequency of expressive speech acts, evenly distributed to elicit emotional responses in players. The translation quality is excellent, with all three dimensions exceeding 95%. Small adjustments to accuracy (around 5%) seem intended to enhance emotional engagement. This research demonstrates that a successful game translation necessitates a balance between accurate language and cultural and emotional meaning, providing practical insights for game developers and localization experts working across languages.

Abstract

Teaching English to students with special needs is certainly not an easy way. So, teachers need to use teaching methods that best suit their students’ conditions. Therefore, this research aims to explore how teachers design English teaching methods and their implementation. Apart from that, this research also describes the challenges faced by English teachers in special schools (SLB). This research was conducted at SLB-AC Dharma Wanita Sidoarjo Regency. The participants in this research were English teachers at junior high schools. This qualitative research uses interview and observation data collection techniques. The results of this research show that teachers use various methods adapted to students’ ability levels, including severe, mild, and special classes, according to their needs. The methods applied reflect awareness of the importance of individualization to support special needs students in learning English. Challenges faced by teachers, such as grouping students based on ability, handling students’ moods, and preparing appropriate learning materials, were also issues found in this research. The results of this research imply that teachers must understand that each student has special needs.

Abstract

Deixis, a fundamental linguistic concept, refers to expressions whose meanings depend on context, including personal pronouns, temporal markers, spatial indicators, and demonstratives. While deixis has been widely studied in conversational and literary discourse, its role in song lyrics remains underexplored, particularly in shaping emotional resonance and thematic depth. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the use of deixis in Die with a Smile by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, focusing on how deictic expressions contribute to narrative construction and listener engagement. Employing a qualitative approach, the study identifies and categorizes deictic expressions in the lyrics, revealing that personal deixis is the most dominant (64.20%), followed by spatial deixis (18.52%), temporal deixis (13.58%), and demonstrative deixis (3.70%). Personal deixis fosters intimacy and relatability, while spatial and temporal deixis situate the narrative within emotional and situational contexts. Demonstrative deixis reinforces shared references and directs the listener’s focus. These deictic elements effectively convey themes of love, longing, and transcendence, demonstrating the intricate relationship between language, meaning, and audience perception in contemporary music. This study contributes to linguistic and musical analysis by highlighting the interplay between deixis and emotional expression in song lyrics.

Abstract

In the digital era, machine translation tools like Google Translate and ChatGPT have become essential for cross-linguistic communication, particularly in translating formal texts such as news articles. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these tools in translating English news articles from Borneo Bulletin into Standard Malay, focusing on lexical accuracy, syntactic structure, and contextual appropriateness. A qualitative comparative analysis was conducted by translating selected articles using both Google Translate and ChatGPT-4. The outputs were manually analyzed using a qualitative rubric guided by meaning-based translation theory, focusing on word choice, sentence structure, the original tone, and cultural nuances. The results indicate that ChatGPT-4 outperforms Google Translate in maintaining lexical precision, grammatical coherence, and contextual relevance. ChatGPT-4 demonstrated superior handling of idiomatic expressions and complex sentence constructions, producing translations that adhered closely to journalistic norms in Standard Malay. However, both tools exhibited limitations in accurately translating culturally specific references and specialized terminology. Google Translate, despite improvements through neural machine translation, tended to produce overly literal translations, leading to a loss of tone and clarity in formal contexts. These findings highlight the potential and limitations of machine translation in journalism, where accuracy and tone are crucial for public trust and information dissemination. The study emphasizes the necessity for enhanced machine translation algorithms and the integration of human feedback to elevate translation quality in low-resource languages such as Malay.
