Abstract

Kebon Gedang Block is one of the few areas of natural dye batik craftsmen in Indonesia. The activity of using natural dyes for batik has been carried out from generation to generation. This study aims to analyze the transfer of ethnobotanical knowledge of natural dyes based on age class (KU), analyze ways to regenerate and analyze the policy scheme for retention of ethnobotanical knowledge of natural dyes in the Kebon Gedang Block. The main methods used in this study were semi-open interviews, observation, and documentation. The selection of respondents was carried out by purposive sampling by considering age (years), namely I (30-39), II (40-49), III (50-59), IV (> 60). The results showed that the level of knowledge of natural dyes and retention was highest in KU III because the people were still healthy, strong, and generally still actively following the development of the batik industry. However, KU III is the group with the highest change in knowledge and is feared to be lost. While at other KU levels, the inheritance of knowledge is still going well. The policy of retaining ethnobotanical knowledge of natural dyes can be carried out in several ways, including by creating books, booklet or electronic sites about knowledge of natural dyes, as well as by registering intellectual property rights. This research can record the current state of knowledge so that efforts can be made to avoid losing this knowledge.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and identify the potential of betel palace leaves (Cissus discolor) as a natural antibiotic candidate in overcoming increasing bacterial resistance. Conventional antibiotic resistance has become a serious problem in the treatment of various diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Betel palace leaf is one of the traditional plants believed to have antibacterial and antioxidant properties. However, it has not been widely explored scientifically. The research method used was a mixed method involving exploratory and experimental approaches. Exploration was conducted to identify the morphology and characteristics of the betel palace plant. The research design used a completely randomized design (CRD) with three variations of extract concentration, namely 50%, 75%, and 100%, as well as positive control (chloramphenicol) and negative control (distilled water). Antibacterial test was conducted against E. coli bacteria using the disc diffusion method. Antioxidant test with DPPH method was tested in various concentrations of 10%, 20%, 50%, 100%, 150%. Phytochemical screening test was used to identify bioactive compounds in the extract. The results showed that the keraton betel leaf extract had weak to moderate antibacterial activity with the largest zone of inhibition obtained at 100% extract concentration. This research contributes to the development of herbal medicine by providing new scientific data related to the potential of Cissus discolor as a source of antibacterial compounds and antioxidants.

Abstract

Dry eye syndrome is a multifactorial condition that disrupts the tear film and ocular surface, causing discomfort, visual disturbances, and damage to the ocular surface. Sargassum cristaefolium, a brown alga found in Indonesia, contains the active compound Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has anti-inflammatory potential. EGCG can inactivate interleukin-1B signaling, thereby triggering the activation of MMPs that play a role in epithelial barrier degradation and maintaining lubrication of the corneal surface. EGCG also exhibits functions comparable to Cyclosporin A, a drug used for dry eye syndrome. This study aims to determine the performance of EGCG in suppressing interleukin-1B to inhibit the production and activation of MMPs through an in-silico approach. The method involves several stages, namely molecular docking, ADME prediction, and toxicity prediction of the active compound EGCG. EGCG is predicted to have potential equivalent to Cyclosporin A in inhibiting interleukin-1B. EGCG shows advantages such as good distribution in blood plasma, no effect on CYP3A4 enzymes, and no influence on OCT2 substrates. In addition, EGCG has a slower excretion rate, is non-mutagenic, does not cause skin sensitization, and is non-hepatotoxic. Thus, EGCG found in Sargassum cristaefolium may serve as an anti-inflammatory agent and inhibit interleukin-1B protein in dry eye syndrome through in silico mechanisms.

Abstract

Biology learning is often dominated by a theoretical approach because many theories cause students to feel bored and less interested. The research aims to determine the learning interest of MA Mazro’atul Huda Karanganyar Demak students towards learning biology using practical methods of cell membrane transport material. This type of research uses quantitative descriptive methods. The research subjects were 26 students of class XI MIPA. The data collection technique uses an instrument in the form of a questionnaire which aims to obtain information regarding students’ learning interests. The research data were analyzed by calculating student questionnaire scores, then converted into percentages and interpreted into categories of very good, good, poor, and not good. The research results showed that 74% of students had a fairly good interest in learning while following the biology learning process using the practicum method. The indicator of learning interest with the highest average value is student involvement in biology subjects, namely 81% with a very good category because students are directly involved in the practicum process to work together in organizing, communicating, and interpreting practicum results. The implication is that in biology learning, specifically cell membrane transport material, teachers should use practical methods because it can foster students’ interest in learning.

Abstract

Springs are groundwater that comes out on its own to the surface of the earth. Water sources originating from springs are generally suitable for direct consumption because they undergo natural purification. However, the high demand for clean water causes springs to experience anthropogenic pressure, which can reduce the quality of spring water. The study aimed to determine the Bacteriological quality of spring water in Toobaun village. The method used in this study was the Most Probable Number (MPN), using a series of five tubes with a variety of 5-5-5. The test included three stages, namely the prediction test, the confirmation test, and the complete test. The data obtained were presented in the form of a table, then compared with the MPN table value and analyzed descriptively by comparing the MPN value with the water quality standard, namely PP No. 22 of 2021 (class I). The results of the study showed that the Fecal Coliform value found was 220 MPN/100ml and did not meet the quality standards of PP No. 22 of 2021 (Class I). In the complete test using EMBA media, three types of bacteria were found that had characteristics similar to Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. Klebsiella sp. Based on the results of water testing at the Toobaun spring, it cannot be consumed directly without first being processed.

Abstract

An effective understanding of curriculum analysis is crucial for prospective Biology teachers, as it lays the foundation for their future teaching practices. Recognizing the extent of students' foreknowledge in this area is essential to adapting appropriate teaching methods to enhance the student's overall learning experience. This study was conducted in August 2024 to assess the initial knowledge of third-semester Biology Education students at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang regarding the course material. Data were collected and analyzed quantitatively using a closed questionnaire consisting of 10 questions, distributed via Google Forms, with a sample size of 77 students. The primary objective of this research was to evaluate students' prior understanding of the curriculum analysis topics in biology. The results indicated that the average knowledge score among students was only 38.83 with low category, suggesting that many students lacked a solid understanding of the curriculum analysis course material. These findings highlight the need for enhanced instructional strategies and resources to better prepare students for the curriculum analysis course, ultimately improving their comprehension and performance in this essential area of their studies. The novelty of this research is that it reveals learning strategies and policy recommendations that are appropriate to the needs and initial level of understanding of students in taking the Biology Curriculum Review course.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries experiencing a food crisis. One of the aspects that makes Indonesia experience a food crisis is due to a decrease in food production due to limited agricultural land. The researcher developed Biometaversia media as an innovation in sustainable agriculture to educate high school students as one part of the community in hydroponic farming that can be done on limited land. In addition, another goal is to enrich students' knowledge about plant growth and development materials. This is done as an effort to create a food-secure society. This study was conducted on September 14, 2023 at SMA Negeri 1 Ciruas with a research population of 21 students in grade XI using the random sampling method. This research was conducted quantitatively with a quasi-experimental research method. Based on the results obtained, in the assessment of learning outcomes based on the average post-test score, an increased score of 66.79 from the pre-test score of 55.24 on the T Test which showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, that there was a difference in student learning outcomes after being given treatment. Then in the assessment of psychomotor aspects (skills) at the time of hydroponic farming, the percentage of average scores with the very good category was obtained. This shows that students have skills in hydroponic farming because they are able to apply their hydroponic knowledge well.
