Abstract

Folklore serves as an important medium for transmitting cultural values across generations, yet many local narratives are increasingly neglected by younger communities. One of these is the Silampari Myth from Lubuklinggau, which has not been widely examined for its educational potential. To address this gap, this study analyzes the cultural values contained in the Silampari myth as an alternative material for character education. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were obtained from local folktales in Lubuklinggau City in the form of cultural values found in the Silampari myth, which include the nature of human life (MH), the nature of human work (MK), the nature of human relationships (MM), the nature of human time (MW), and the nature of human–nature relationships (MA). The results indicate that the cultural values reflected in the Silampari myth include honesty, tolerance, democratic attitudes, hard work, conflict avoidance or peacefulness, building friendship, and responsibility. Based on these cultural values, the Silampari myth can serve as an alternative material for character education, considering that the values it contains are aligned with national cultural and character values.

Abstract

The increasing manipulation of language in political discourse has renewed academic interest in how power and ideology are embedded in everyday texts—a concern particularly urgent in today's post-truth era. In response, this study investigates how the theoretical foundations of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) are principally informed by the seminal frameworks advanced by scholars such as Norman Fairclough and Teun A. van Dijk can serve as valuable foundations for enhancing critical reading abilities in higher education. CDA theorizes language functions not as a neutral conduit but as a socially embedded practice that simultaneously mirrors and perpetuates existing power relations. Through a classroom-based analysis of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, this study operationalizes CDA as both an analytical and pedagogical framework. Students used AntConc, a corpus analysis tool, to examine rhetorical patterns, slogans, and ideological shifts in the text. The application of CDA enabled learners to uncover how language constructs dominance, distorts ideology, and silences dissent. Key features of CDA—such as intertextuality, hegemony, and discursive strategies—were translated into student-friendly tools for critical textual engagement. The findings suggest that integrating CDA with literary analysis not only enhances students’ interpretive depth but also cultivates their political literacy.

Abstract

Room to Read’s online reading platform, Literacy Cloud, positions itself as a digital literacy resource committed to promoting inclusive and gender-equal learning for children. This study examines how gender equality is represented in stories tagged under the “Gender Equality” category on the platform. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyzes all 19 stories listed under this tag, with particular attention to thematic content related to gender representation. The findings reveal notable inconsistencies between the platform’s stated mission and its content categorization practices. Of the 19 stories examined, only six meaningfully promote gender-equal values in ways that are accessible to children. Eleven stories contain no identifiable gender-related themes, while one story reinforces traditional gender roles despite being classified as a gender-equality text. These results point to a critical issue of misclassification rather than content scarcity, suggesting that current tagging practices may obscure—rather than facilitate—access to genuinely gender-inclusive narratives. The study underscores the importance of accurate curation and rigorous editorial oversight in digital literacy plat-forms that seek to advance gender equality.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the occurrence of material, mental, and verbal processes in the text of the e-book 电子商务基础 / E-commerce Basics by employing the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), with a particular focus on the transitivity system. Within SFL, transitivity explains how human experience is represented in language through different process types, participant roles, and accompanying circumstantial elements. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through literature review of the first three chapters of the book. The findings show that material processes are the most dominant, indicating that the text primarily focuses on real actions and activities in the world of e-commerce. Mental processes reflect the thoughts, perceptions, and feelings of consumers and business actors, while verbal processes describe communication and interactions within digital business activities. The analysis demonstrates that transitivity theory effectively reveals both explicit and implicit meanings in the e-commerce text and enhances understanding of how language structures and conveys meaning in a digital business context.

Abstract

The researcher analyzes the motive of attitude alteration to pursue self-actualization in the novel The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It aims to find the forms of attitude alteration found in the novel, and to analyze the motive of attitude alteration in pursuit of self-actualization in the novel. This research uses Burrhus Frederic Skinner’s operant conditioning theory to find the forms of attitude alteration and Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory to analyze changes in attitude towards self-actualization. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach for a close reading to analyze the novel’s narrative and character dialogues. The findings of this study revealed four forms of attitude alteration: positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment. Each form significantly influences how characters strive to meet their needs in various circumstances, ultimately leading to personal fulfillment. The results shows that positive reinforcement most often influences characters, enabling individuals to reach the stage of self-actualization more frequently. This research demonstrates that the adoption of positive attitudes empowers characters to achieve their goals and improves their ability to engage in social interactions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the signs and meanings found in the animated film Toy Story 4 using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. This study focuses on identifying the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings found in selected characters and dialogues from the film. This study uses a qualitative research method, in which data is collected by carefully watching the film, selecting important scenes and dialogues, and analyzing them through Barthes' semiotic framework. This analysis explores how the signs in the film function not only as narrative elements but also as representations of deeper social and cultural meanings. The results show that several characters, such as Woody, Forky, Bo Peep, and Gabby Gabby, represent different symbolic meanings related to leadership, identity, independence, acceptance, and the desire for love and recognition. At the denotative level, the characters and dialogues convey literal meanings based on their roles in the story. At the connotative level, they express emotional and social meanings such as responsibility, self-esteem, and personal. Lastly, the mythological level reveals broader cultural values related to acceptance, empathy, courage in the face of change, and understanding one's role in society. Moral messages will also be drawn based on the myths found in the film.

Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing the theories of Psychoanalysis, Marx’s Commodity and Bourdieu’s Distinction. This content analysis utilizes the text of Freud, Lacan, Marx and Bourdieu. Freud and Lacan flourish the theoretical worlds under the term of psychoanalysis. Each shows the different aspects of identifying human consciousness and unconsciousness. Freud, a neurosis, roots his theory of ego, id and superego from his dealing with his patients using dream works as his point of analytical which highlights the oral, anal and phallic stage of mental development of human beings. This study finds out that Lacan deconstructs Freud theory using linguistic aspect which theorizes the metaphor and metonymy use of an individual to the unconsciousness. Marx focuses on commodity exchange and fights of classes in social economy perspective which is more material perspective. Bourdieu with his term “distinction” views that an individual taste is shaped by educational, social and family background. Freud and Lacan focus more on psychology stream. On contrast, Marx and Bourdieu analyze the sociological appearance. After all, society is a group of individuals with heterogeneous backgrounds tied up by an ideological concept. In the long run, an individual identifies himself from the group that he should follow or leave.
