Abstract

This study evaluates the alignment of reading passages and comprehension tasks in the SPLASH English textbook for Grade 10 vocational high school students, claimed to target CEFR B1 level under Indonesia's Merdeka Curriculum, with CEFR B1 descriptors and national learning outcomes. Employing a qualitative descriptive content analysis, all 83 reading passages across units were systematically assessed using a CEFR based checklist covering text type relevance, vocabulary range, sentence complexity, comprehensibility, organization, inferencing potential, and cognitive demands of questions. Findings reveal high overall alignment, with unit scores ranging 92.85 to 96.42 percent (Highly Aligned), strong performance in vocabulary (92.73 percent Fully Supported), main ideas comprehensibility (81.82 percent), and question demands (87.27 percent), though sentence complexity (21.82 percent Minimally Supported) and text organization (18.18 percent) show minor inconsistencies. Dominant categories include Identifying Cues and Inferring (36.14 percent) and Reading for Orientation (34.94 percent), supporting B1 independent reading skills but lacking correspondence genres. The materials substantially align with Merdeka Phase E outcomes for information seeking and inferential skills, yet require broader text variety for full curriculum consistency. These results affirm the textbook's B1 suitability, contrasting prior misalignment studies, and recommend enhanced discourse features and genre diversity for optimal vocational EFL instruction.

Abstract

Speech motivation in animated films is generally influenced by the emotional dynamics and psychological needs of the characters involved in a particular speech situation. The relationship between internal drives, affective conditions, and language realization has not been fully understood in animated film studies, especially from a psycholinguistic perspective. This study aims to identify and describe the forms of speech motivation of the character Don in the animated film Jumbo (2025) through a psycholinguistic approach supported by pragmatic context analysis. The issues examined in this study are how Don's emotional state and psychological needs become dominant factors in shaping the construction of speech motivation and how this circular pattern of motivation works in speech dynamics. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a psycholinguistic approach. The research data consists of quotes from Don's dialogue that contain indications of speech motivation in the film. The data collection technique was carried out through listening and note-taking, while the data analysis technique used an interactive analysis model that included data reduction, data presentation, and verification and conclusion drawing. The research findings were then integrated into a contextual circular model of speech motivation as a conceptual analysis tool to map the relationship between situational stimuli, emotions, psychological needs, communicative goals, and social responses. The results showed that Don's speech motivation was dominated by the needs for belonging and recognition, which emerged through various emotional conditions such as happiness, fear, anger, disappointment, regret, and longing. Each utterance is formed through a circular process involving external stimuli, cognitive evaluation, activation of psychological needs, and linguistic realization in the form of verbal and nonverbal expressions. The circular model of speech motivation formulated in this study shows that speech is the result of psychological drives and becomes an evaluative mechanism that re-influences the

Abstract

This study investigated whether English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ instructional management (IM) and behavior management (BM) approaches vary according to gender, teaching experience, and academic qualification in Ethiopian middle schools. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was employed. Data were collected from 42 EFL teachers using a structured classroom management questionnaire comprising instructional and behavior management subscales. Internal consistency reliability was acceptable (α = .78 for IM; α = .78 for BM). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to examine group differences, and effect sizes (η²) were calculated to assess practical significance. The findings revealed no statistically significant differences in instructional or behavior management across gender, experience, or qualification groups (p > .05). Effect sizes were small or negligible (η² ranging from .001 to .06), indicating that demographic variables accounted for minimal variance in classroom management practices. These results suggest that classroom management approaches among middle school EFL teachers are relatively stable across demographic categories. Institutional norms, shared professional training, and contextual factors may exert a stronger influence than individual demographic characteristics. The findings have implications for teacher professional development and educational policy design.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the low writing skills in simple texts, particularly reconstruction texts, among fourth-grade elementary school students. These difficulties are caused by struggles in developing ideas coherently, limited vocabulary, lack of self-confidence, and teacher-centered teaching methods. This development research aims to design, validate, and assess the effectiveness of the "Pametra: Panduan Menulis Teks Rekon Anak" E-Book, based on the synectics model, to improve the reconstruction writing skills of fourth-grade elementary students. The research method uses the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The research subjects consisted of students from classes IV A and B at SD Negeri Salaman Mloyo, Semarang. Data collection was carried out through observations, interviews, questionnaires, tests (pretest-posttest), and expert validation. The findings are as follows: (1) The Pametra E-Book was developed based on a needs analysis that identified students' difficulties in writing reconstruction texts, limited learning materials, and a preference for visual learning styles. (2) The product design was developed using the Canva software application, considered highly suitable based on the validation of content experts (93.75%) and media experts (91.67%). (3) The Pametra E-Book effectively improved reconstruction writing skills with an average N-Gain of 0.60 (moderate category), and the paired sample t-test results showed significance of 0.000 (p<0.05). The product implementation demonstrated improvements in understanding text structure through the "Story House" analogy, the ability to develop ideas using the adiksimba table, and the "Film Camera" analogy, as well as increased creativity, motivation, and student independence in learning. Therefore, the Pametra E-Book based on the synectics model is suitable and effective for use as an innovative learning medium to improve reconstruction text writing skills among fourth-grade elementary school students.

Abstract

Rapid technological advancement has encouraged the integration of gamification in English language teaching to enhance student engagement. However, the effectiveness of technological tools largely depends on teachers’ perceptions and instructional decisions, particularly in inclusive learning contexts. This study aims to explore teachers’ perceptions of the use of ZEP Quiz in an inclusive English reading classroom, particularly regarding its influence on students’ motivation to develop reading skills and the challenges teachers face during its implementation. Employing a qualitative case study design, the study involved an English teacher and a shadow teacher teaching ninth-grade students in an inclusive classroom with a slow learner. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and documentation and were analyzed thematically using the ARCS motivational framework (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction). The findings indicate that, from the English teacher’s perspective, ZEP Quiz enhances students’ attention through interactive features, supports reading comprehension when combined with structured guidance, increases students’ confidence in answering reading questions, and fosters learning satisfaction through engaging and competitive elements. In contrast, the shadow teacher perceived that while ZEP Quiz could stimulate motivation and provide reading exposure for the slow learner, its effectiveness in developing independent comprehension remained limited without continuous scaffolding, emotional support, and peer assistance. Several challenges were also identified, including limited device availability, restrictive school policies regarding gadget use, unstable internet connectivity, and the need for ongoing pedagogical adaptation to accommodate diverse learner characteristics in inclusive settings.

Abstract

This study focuses on the sociolinguistic study of the linguistic landscape in Papaya Supermarket. This study's objectives are to identify and classify the signs based on language display and function found in Papaya Supermarket. The writer utilizes Landry & Bourhis' (1997) theory of linguistic landscape and uses a descriptive-qualitative approach to analyze the data textually. The data consists of 73 signs. Then, the writer classifies the data based on the language display: monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual. Monolingual signs consist of 21 signs, bilingual signs consist of 32 signs, and multilingual signs consist of 20 signs. The languages that the writer has found consist of Indonesian, English, and Japanese. The function of these languages is classified by the writer into two: informational function and symbolic function. The informational function consisted of 67 signs, and the symbolic function consisted of 6 signs. The primary function of language is to convey information, as seen in signs that guide, prohibit, or inform everyone. Language, on the other hand, serves as a symbol in advertisements and products from other countries that use foreign words to evoke a specific emotion.
