Abstract

This research is an analysis of the allegorical plot of Animal Farm and its clever usage of anthropomorphism in the change from a peaceful farm to a tyrannical one. This paper indicates the major features of the change from a utopian farm to a dystopian one, such as the perpetually increasing amount of labour that each animal has to undertake, the obvious decrease of ration which the pigs use for trading otherwise, the disturbing intervention into animals' personal freedom and thought by the totalitarian pigs and many more accounts that further establish such change. The aim of this was to shed light on those distinct paths that may lead any society towards dystopia, lest any community may have already begun going down such paths, to alert them and reverberate the sounding alarm. At the beginning, this research dealt with an introduction to the background of the time and literary movement that was present during the process of writing Animal Farm, namely the rise of the Stalinisit regime, and the surge of Utopian/Dystopian novels. The second chapter studies previous research written on the same topic as this one, the early events in Animal Farm and their effect on shaping the farm, and the significance of freedom within the farm. The third chapter consists of demonstrating the fundamental changes that contributed to the decline of the farm into its eventual dystopian nature, and a conclusion on the matter. The paper uses a textual and historical approaches in analyzing the texts of the novella.  Keywords: utopia, dystopia, orwell, labour, liberty, tyranny, commandment, censorship

Abstract

This study examines the primary conflicts within the novel Great Expectations, each paragraph focusing on a distinct conflict present in the narrative. The analysis applies Lewis A. Coser's theory of social conflict (2002), which categorizes conflicts into three types: conflicts concerning social statuses, conflicts of interest, and conflicts of role. The objective of this research is to identify these social conflicts within the novel and explore their impact on readers. The study identifies a total of 13 instances of social conflict: 7 related to conflicts concerning social statuses, 3 involving conflicts of interest, and 3 concerning conflicts of role. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes textual data to uncover these conflicts, which are integral to the story of the main character. The novel adopts a mode that combines personal narrative with written and spoken dialogue. The influence of these social conflicts on readers is significant, as they resonate with real-life situations, helping readers to understand and navigate various types of conflicts encountered in everyday life. Abstract

The paper aims to examine the cast of artificial intelligence (AI) character in solving the problem of love and belonging needs in I am Mother film. Today, the arise of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought controversial debate among society about ethical consideration and psychological problems. One of the concerns is that the integration of AI with character may open up new approaches and innovation toward AI. The data are qualitatively-described focusing on psychological problems of main character using the third level of the hierarchy of human needs of Abraham Harold Maslow. The data are collected from dialogue, visual capture, and cinematography of I am Mother film. The study reveals that AI has a significant influence on the main character's sense of loss of love and belonging. In this film, the main character undergoes loss of love and belonging needs in four forms, family relationships, friendships, romantic relationships, community, and social group. Consequently, the loss of love and belonging has affected the main character’s psychology, feelings of loneliness, isolation, and emotional instability. Fortunately, the main character (Daughter) can overcome her psychological problems, such as creating a close relationship with Mother, improving her self-development, having empathy and caring for their environment, searching for the truth in the outside world, and finding the truth and where she belongs. The study concluded that AI’s emotion still needs to be controlled and trained to make up something, such as how to express emotion and feeling because the AI doesn’t understand the context since they are still need human involvement in its process of development.

Abstract

Language acquisition is a process which is experienced by a child in acquiring a first and second language. It needs a natural setting of target language in order to convey and understand the message correctly. The research was designed as a qualitative study to describe the process of second language acquisition experienced by Afghan refugees living in Makassar City for 5 to 10 years. In addition to describing the language acquisition process for Bahasa Indonesia as a second language, the study also explored the factors influencing this process. The research took 10 Afghan refugees who were proficient in Bahasa Indonesia as participants. To gather data related to their language acquisition and the factors influencing it, the informants were interviewed. Observation was used to supplement and verify the data on Bahasa Indonesia acquisition from the interviews. Thus, the data were analysed based on Krashen's theory (1995) of acquisition learning and the factors that influenced the informants' language acquisition. The research revealed that the refugees in Makassar used various methods (self-learning, courses) to acquire Bahasa Indonesia. They progressed through the five stages of language acquisition. Internal (motivation, personality, aptitude) and external factors (learning situations, local interactions) influenced their learning. Despite challenges, they persevered by practicing with Indonesian neighbours.Keyword: language acquisition, Afghan refugees, efforts, interaction, local people

Abstract

Racism can trigger the development of an individual's resistance due to the inequality between ethnic minority and majority groups. This study aimed to discover the forms of resistance shown by Rich Brian through his Instagram account. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method by applying the resistance theory by Ellefsen, Banafsheh, and Sandberg (2022). The data source used in this research comes from Rich Brian's Instagram account with the username @brianimanuel (https://www.instagram.com/brianimanuel/). The data used in this study are verbal and visual components of Rich Brian's Instagram posts. The results of the analysis show that the emergence of Rich Brian's resistance against racism occur after he experiences various forms of racism while being part of an ethnic minority in the United States. Rich Brian's Instagram account only displays four of the five resistance forms identified in Ellefsen et al.'s framework: ignoring, confronting, protesting, and sharing experiences. Abstract

Abstract As a language learning resource, an English as a foreign language (EFL) or English as a second language (ESL) textbook plays a pivotal role in students' pragmatic development. There has been a plethora of studies conducted to evaluate the quality of textbooks across the countries regarding the proportional content of pragmatic uses. However, there is still no evidence of the study in Indonesia. Thus, to fill this void, the study aims to explore types of speech acts included in an EFL coursebook for senior high school students and to what extent those speech acts meet students' learning needs. This study employs a qualitative content analysis method, with one nationally mandated English textbook for senior high school students chosen and analysed. The analysis included categorizing dialogues in the textbook using Searle's (1976) Speech Act Theory, which comprises directive, commissive, representative/assertive, declarative, and expressive speech acts. The research findings indicate that the pragmatic content in the coursebook is still inadequate. This inadequacy may affect students' pragmatic development since proportional use of all types of speech acts would help learners use an appropriate speech act in an appropriate social setting. There is a call for more studies on the evaluation of EFL textbooks which use textbooks from all grades at senior high school level. Keyword: EFL textbook, pragmatics, speech act analysis

Abstract

This study investigated the phenomena of code-switching and code-mixing as employed by Boy William and Valencia Tanoesoedibjo, focusing on identifying their types, underlying reasons, and contributing factors. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study analyzed non-numerical data, specifically the spoken utterances of Boy and Valencia in a vlog, where instances of code-switching and code-mixing occur. The classification of code-switching follows the framework proposed by Poplack (1980), while the identification of code-mixing types relies on Hoffman's (1991) model. Additionally, Hoffman's (1991) framework is utilized to explore the reasons behind their use of code-switching and code-mixing. To further examine the influencing factors, the study employs the theoretical framework of Bhatia and Ritchie (2004). The findings indicate that Boy and Valencia employed five of the seven identified reasons for code-switching and code-mixing: discussing specific topics, expressing emphasis, using interjections, clarifying speech through repetition, and ensuring clarity for the interlocutor. Regarding the influencing factors, the analysis reveals that participant roles and relationships, situational contexts, message-intrinsic features, and attitudes towards language, including dominance and security, are significant contributors. Moreover, an additional factor identified in the study is their prior experience of living overseas, which further shapes their linguistic choices. Abstract

This study aimed to identify the codes used, the types, and the reasons of the use of code switching found in the conversational expression in You and Insecurities novel by Ayya. The researcher analyzed the types of code switching using the theory proposed by Poplack (1980) and the reasons of code switching based on the Hoffmann's (1991) theory. The findings showed that the characters employed three languages in the conversations, those are Indonesian, English, and Sundanese. The most frequent types of code switching found is inter-sentential switching. It can be seen that the characters in the novel have good English skill because they have the ability to intentionally switch the language from Indonesian to English and vice versa. The most frequent reasons of code switching found is talking about particular topic. The characters employed code switching in their conversation to talk or discuss a certain topic because they feel free and comfortable to express their feelings and to make the communication easy to understand. By analyzing the codes, the types, and the reasons of code switching found in You and Insecurities novel using sociolinguistics theories, the researcher realized that a sociolinguistics approach can reveal how language in a novel reflects different social groups, the dialects and languages used by the characters, and how the social and cultural context influences the narrative. The communication style of urban people of Jakarta, in particular of the young executive group identity, is reflected in the studied novel that is You and Insecurities by Ayya. Abstract

Media challenges in presenting information are increasingly complex. Mass media sometimes fail to maintain the ethics of journalism, which require them to remain neutral. Large-scale events, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, trigger varying interests within particular social groups or even countries. However, Fairclough argued that there are several conditions under which the media become dependent on or affiliated with power holders or governments, as revealed in a specific branch of Critical Discourse Analysis. This research aims to examine how 9News uses certain language in conveying issues and managing the production and consumption of texts. It also analyzes the social practices created by the discourse of 9News, employing the concept of Media Discourse as a branch of Critical Discourse Analysis, as proposed by Fairclough. As a result, the research found that articles on the 9News website tend to discriminate against Russia and support Ukraine. This bias is influenced by ideology, which affects the delivery, production, and consumption of text. Consequently, the social practices produced by these texts result in injustice, revealing 9News' tendency on the issue.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze lexicon choices, word formation, and reference in English culinary lexicon on food and beverage menus in restaurants and cafes in Kudus City. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, collecting data from 25 establishments, Focusing on lexical choices, word formation processes, and references. Semantic theory and morphological analysis were used to interpret the data. The results show that the lexicon contained in the beverage menu is more diverse than the food menu, as beverage variants are used more on menus than food. In addition, compounding is the dominant word formation process found in the menu. The findings illustrate the influence of local culture in the choice of words used on food and beverage menus, as well as showing creative trends in word formation through compounding. This research contributes to the understanding of how the English culinary lexicon is adapted in local cultural contexts and how word formation processes reflect communication needs in the culinary industry, so that people can mention menu names without changing the pronunciation.
