Abstract

This article aims to explore the intersection between comparative literature and adaptation studies, examining the theoretical frameworks and practical applications that underlie this fascinating field. By analysing the transformation of a classic work into various media, we will uncover the mechanisms of change and the cultural significance embedded in these adaptations. This article examines the film adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola. A comparative analysis is conducted on the novel and film to identify significant changes that occurred in the adaptation process. These changes include the addition of scenes, character modifications, and changes to the plot. One of the main changes is the addition of a romantic element between Dracula and Mina, which is not present in the original novel. This change transforms the theme of gothic horror into a more nuanced tragic love story. The study concludes that the film adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula involves a number of significant changes that alter the meaning and experience of the narrative. Further research is needed to understand the motivations and impact of changes in the adaptation process, especially from a cultural and sociological perspective. In addition, a broader comparative study could be conducted by comparing different adaptations of Dracula to see the patterns of change that occur over time. It is also important to understand how changes in adaptation affect audience reception. Adaptation research methodology needs to be continuously developed by integrating digital humanities approaches and new technologies to provide a more comprehensive perspective. More systematic documentation of the decision-making process in adaptation is also needed to understand the factors that influence changes from novel to film, so as to provide deeper insight into the process of adapting literary works to visual media. Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the factors influencing Trevor Noah’s use of negative politeness strategies in his stand-up comedy special “Atlanta Afraid of the Dark” (2016). Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research examined and explained the types and influencing factors of negative politeness strategies in Noah’s performance. The study utilized Brown and Levinson’s theories on politeness strategies, particularly negative politeness, to identify and categorize these strategies and their influencing factors. Additionally, Ramon Papana’s framework for the structural build of stand-up comedy techniques was used to analyze the elements of Noah’s comedy. The study found that Noah frequently used impersonal humor in his jokes. It also revealed that social context significantly impacted the content of the jokes, with Noah purposefully addressing social issues. The findings showed that Noah’s humor often employed negative politeness techniques, such as being indirect, questioning, hedging, and depersonalizing both the speaker and the listener. In conclusion, the negative politeness strategies of pessimism, questioning, hedging, and depersonalization played a crucial role in delivering the punchlines. Additionally, callbacks were created using negative politeness methods, such as showing deference and apologizing.Keyword: comedy, politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy

Data collection was conducted through document analysis. The findings revealed that John Terry's utterances contained several instances of maxim flouting: 25 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity (64.8%), 1 instance of flouting the maxim of quality (3.7%), 8 instances of flouting the maxim of relation (20.7%), and 4 instances of flouting the maxim of manner (10.8%). In contrast, Ashley Cole's utterances included 21 occurrences of flouting the maxim of quantity (80.7%), 2 instances each of flouting the maxims of quality and relation (7.7% each), and 1 instance of flouting the maxim of manner (3.9%). Abstract

In the realm of fine arts, it is common for one form of art to draw inspiration from another, a process known as transformation. This research focuses on the film adaptation of literary works, examining the ecranization of novels into films and the use of adaptation theory to convert novel texts into visual films while preserving the essence of the novel as a hypogram. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing close reading and close viewing techniques. It classifies the transformations using Pamusuk Eneste's ecranization (1991) approach and Seymour Chatman's interpretation theory (2018) of the change process in novels and films. The findings reveal that films often include additional stories to convey the setting more explicitly. Although various settings are altered, these changes are justified as it is often impractical to visually depict the atmosphere detailed in the novel. The introduction of new characters in the film aligns with the expanded plot, necessitating the inclusion of characters absent in the novel. Additionally, the visualization of characters in the film undergoes modifications, yet remains consistent with the novel's descriptions. Backgrounds are condensed to fit the film's plot, resulting in the omission of some novel locations in the film adaptation.Keyword: transformation, ecranization, novel, film, twilight

Discourse deixis refers to deictic references to segments of discourse relative to the speaker’s current position within the discourse. Discourse deixis, like anaphora and cataphora, can serve as a cohesive device within a text. The analysis found 53 deictic expressions in 38 utterances in the speech. The types of discourse deixis found in the speech were it (20 data), this (10 data), and (7 data), these (4 data), but (4 data), that (2 data), so (2 data), those (1 datum), there (1 datum), or (1 datum), and actually (1 datum). Moreover, 34 data contained anaphora functions, such as and, it, this. Meanwhile, 19 data contained cataphora functions, such as that, but, or, so, these, those, and actually. Therefore, paying attention to deixis leads to more distinctive, accurate, and compelling conversations.Keyword: discourse deixis, speech, suho EXO
