Abstract

Black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) is one of the biological agents for organic waste decomposition and this process produced insect biomass with significant economic value. Giving of juvenile hormone (JH) which is thought to be present in nappier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) can increase the number of BSF egg production. The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of nappier grass extract on the reproductive performance of H. illucens based on the number of eggs produced, the percentage of eggs hatched, and the sex ratio of BSF flies. The research was conducted experimentally using a completely randomized design (CRD). The number of eggs produced and the percentage of eggs hatched analyzed using non-parametric analysis with the Kruskal-wallis test and followed by the Mann Whitney test. Statistical testing using SPSS version 16.0. The sex ratio of BSF flies was analyzed descriptively. Phytochemical test analysis was carried out to ensure the content of compounds present in nappier grass extract (P. purpureum). The result shows that nappier grass extract has significant effect (P<0.05) on number of eggs produced and the percentage of eggs hatched based on Kruskal-wallis test. Based on the results of the Mann Whitney test, it was found that all treatments of nappier grass extract on the number of BSF egg production and the percentage of eggs hatched was significantly different (P<0.05). The highest egg production effect which the average number of egg production was 209 mg at 600 ppm. At 600 ppm had the highest percentage egg that hatched effect which the average of percentage egg that hatched was 88,759%. The optimum sex ratio for the cultivation was at 200 ppm, which is 60.42% female and 39.58% male Keyword: . Black Soldier Fly, Pennisetum purpureum, Reproductive performance

Abstract

β-CGTase (β-cyclodextrin glycosyl transferase) is an enzyme that converts starch into CD (cyclodextrin). The CD is a high-value oligosaccharide used for modifying food, textiles, chemicals, medicines, cosmetics, and biotechnology. This research aims to obtain isolates of β-CGTase producing bacteria from sweet potato plantation soil. Screening is carried out using Horikoshi media which contains the color indicators phenolphthalein and methyl orange. Bacteria producing β-CGTase will give a yellow hollow zone if they grow on this media. CGTase activity was measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Three isolates producing CGTase were obtained, coded BSP6A, BSP6B, and BSP6C, which had the characteristics of being Gram-positive, shaped like bacilli, produced spores, were motile, had a positive catalase test, and could ferment acid. These three isolates were able to produce the optimum CGTase enzyme if incubated for 18 and 24 hours at a temperature of 37°C and pH 10 and were able to convert starch into CD if incubated for 30 minutes at a temperature of 37°C and pH 7.

Abstract

Bryophytes are a group of low-level plants that grow widely and are found in tropical areas. Their distribution is influenced by biotic and abiotic factors such as water, light, temperature, humidity, and altitude. The ecological role of lichens in tropical ecosystems is to maintain water balance, nutrient cycling, bioindicators of environmental change, open space for other plants, and carbon sinks on peatlands. The role of moss is very important for the ecosystem, and there is no data on moss species in the Silawe waterfall area, so researchers conducted this study to identify environmental factors that affect moss diversity. Data collection for moss plants was carried out through a combination of exploration and field observation methods. Based on the results of observations, 7 species of moss, 5 leaf mosses (Bryopsida), and 2 liverworts (Marchantiopsida) were obtained. The identified ferns came from 7 different families, namely Funariaceae, Dicranaceae, Fissidentaceae, Hypnaceae, Entodontaceae, Marchantiaceae, and Lepidoziaceae. The identified moss species were Funaria hygrometrica, Dicranum fuscescens, Fissidens sp., Hypnum cupressiforme, Entodon sp., Marchantia polymorpha, and Bazzania sp.

Abstract

River Mengaji originates from a water source on the southern forest slopes of Mount Slamet. Gastropods are important biotic components in river ecosystems and can be used as bioindicators due to their sensitivity to water quality changes. Gastropod abundance is closely related to the physical and chemical parameters of water quality. This study aimed to determine the abundance of gastropods, water quality, and the relationship between gastropod abundance and water quality in River Mengaji, Banyumas Regency. Species gastropod identified samples collected. The relationship between gastropod abundance and water quality was analyzed using Spearman's Rank Correlation. The result showed that the gastropods found in Sungai Mengaji consist of five species, namely Melanoides tuberculata, Sulcosprira testudinaria, Radix rubiginosa, Tarebia granifera, and Filopaludina javanica. The highest abundance of gastropods was observed at Station IV, followed by Stations II, III, and I. Water quality conditions were generally good enough, except for temperature and BOD at Station IV. The high abundance of F. javanica at Station IV is related to the high temperature and BOD conditions in Sungai Mengaji, Banyumas Regency.
