The site forms two separate parts due to its area which surrounded by the main road and separated by other collector roads. The goals of this project are how to design a campus environment that cares for the surrounding environment, can provide comfort to its users, and can create sustainable buildings. After analyzing and implementing the concept of green architecture, the final design concept are two building masses connected with sky bridge which can accommodate 723 seats, windows and inner court to allow the airflow and natural light enters the rooms, secondary skin and vines as its facade to buffer over sunshine and noises, water and trash recycling treatment to reduce clean water use, and solar panel as additional electricity energy.

Abstract

Nowadays, eating and drinking is not only a basic need but also has become one of the tourist destinations. Tongging Village is one of the tourist villages with views of Lake Toba and its grilled fish that has the potential to develop culinary and shopping tourism. Besides, Tongging Village is also directed by the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism to become a culinary tourism and shopping center on Lake Toba. In designing a culinary tourism center and shopping, the application of green architecture is the right choice by utilizing natural resources and not damaging existing natural conditions. The design method was carried out qualitatively by a sequential systematic process and taking data through field surveys and interviews with the headman and local communities so that it produces points that could be used in designing. The design of culinary tourism and shopping centers with the application of green architecture aims to utilize natural resources without damaging natural conditions and attract tourist enthusiasm so that culinary and shopping tourism centers become one of the main tourist destinations for the Lake Toba Region which will affect the income of Indonesia's creative economy. Natural and human-made heritage can be in the form of buildings for commercial, cultural, educational, and religious purposes, family houses, industrial areas or government buildings, parks, bridges, old cities, historic neighborhoods, or traditional residential groups. This study aims to identify the Al-Mashun Mosque as a historic building. Several features are compiled such as name, location, owner, date of construction, original and current use, category, condition, description, history, significance/value, photo, source, founder, and the recommendation for rehabilitation/ revitalization/ conservation /preservation efforts in the concerned area or other matters considered to be necessary. This study is expected to assist efforts to preserve the Al-Mashun Mosque as a historic building in Medan City by optimizing its potential through conservation, preservation, revitalization/adaptation, rehabilitation/restoration, and reconstruction measures. Hopefully, Medan City is expected to have identity and characteristics in formulating the beauty of the city and promoting cultural tourism, while still involving the private sector and community participation.

Abstract

Dutch plantation expansion in the city of Medan left many historical buildings. The plantation building is a historical legacy that must be preserved. G.H Mulder was one of the architects of the time, with his work on the Palm Oil Research Center (PPKS) and the Sumatra Plantation Cooperation Agency (BKS-PPS). The facade is an inseparable element of the architectural product, which is the first element that we capture visually. This research studied and analyzed the elements of colonial architecture that form the facade of The Plantation Development of the Oil Palm Research Center (PPKS) and the building of the Sumatra Plantation Cooperation Agency (BKS-PPS). The research method used in this study is a qualitative method with variables such as walls, columns, doors, windows, vents, roofs, balcony, and ground floor zones. The study founded that the two estate buildings had the characteristics of the transitional colonial architectural period, accompanied by a grouping of similarities in the elements of the two facade. Despite having the same function, architect, and construction period, the two buildings still have differences in the characteristics in facade elements and the visual quality.

Abstract

Kesawan sub-district is one of the sub-district that has many roles in the history of Medan. Initially, the Kesawan sub-district was a Malay sub-district in 1880, and then since the Dutch colonial era, ethnic Chinese began to enter the Kesawan sub-district along with compensation for the expiration of Chinese employment contracts as workers at deli tobacco plantations owned by the Dutch government. Over time, the Kesawan sub-district was sought by ethnic Chinese as a trading area to develop into Chinatown. Currently, the Kesawan sub-district has various ethnicities scattered in each sub-district area. Ethnic groups consist of groups whose members each identify themselves with the other by creating parameters. Ethnically diverse communities tend to group themselves, creating patterns of settlements. In some studies, it was found that kinship factors can be the determining factor in the formation of settlements closely related to social ties, cultural and religious rules, and economic activities. Based on this fact, it can be said that each ethnic group can influence the location of its residents and the principles it adheres to. Patterns of settlements created from ethnic groups can identify specific identities that are more highlighted so as to have differences with other settlements. The results of the study found that most of the settlement patterns of the Kesawan sub-district are influenced by ethnic Chinese who mostly work in the trade sector, while ethnic Tamils are also seen on the outskirts of the Kesawan sub-district.
