Abstract

Kesawan sub-district is one of the sub-district that has many roles in the history of Medan. Initially, the Kesawan sub-district was a Malay sub-district in 1880, and then since the Dutch colonial era, ethnic Chinese began to enter the Kesawan sub-district along with compensation for the expiration of Chinese employment contracts as workers at deli tobacco plantations owned by the Dutch government. Over time, the Kesawan sub-district was sought by ethnic Chinese as a trading area to develop into Chinatown. Currently, the Kesawan sub-district has various ethnicities scattered in each sub-district area. Ethnic groups consist of groups whose members each identify themselves with the other by creating parameters. Ethnically diverse communities tend to group themselves, creating patterns of settlements. In some studies, it was found that kinship factors can be the determining factor in the formation of settlements closely related to social ties, cultural and religious rules, and economic activities. Based on this fact, it can be said that each ethnic group can influence the location of its residents and the principles it adheres to. Patterns of settlements created from ethnic groups can identify specific identities that are more highlighted so as to have differences with other settlements. The results of the study found that most of the settlement patterns of the Kesawan sub-district are influenced by ethnic Chinese who mostly work in the trade sector, while ethnic Tamils are also seen on the outskirts of the Kesawan sub-district.

Abstract

Parapat is a village in Girsang Sipangan Bolon District, Simalungun Regency. In the Master Plan of Priority Tourism Destinations (RIDPP) of Lake Toba 2020-2045, Parapat became one of the Key Tourism Area (KTA) in supporting Lake Toba Tourism Priority Destination (DPP). DPP Lake Toba is one of ten DPP that the government has set in achieving tourism development goals. So that the government is aggressively developing tourism in Indonesia to be increasingly known both nationally and internationally, tourism development is more directed towards sustainable tourism development. The indicators assessed in this study are on seasonal tourism issues, which refers to the Baseline Indicators of Sustainable Tourism Development for Tourism Destinations by WTO. This research uses qualitative research with a descriptive approach. Award chose qualitative descriptive research because this study explores the assessment of seasonal tourism indicators in Parapat that will be presented in descriptive form. The results of the study analysis found that there was an increase in the number of tourist visits to Parapat. This is due to the many meeting activities and MICE held at the hotel both by various government agencies and the local agency area. Regarding tourist attractions, the Lake Toba Festival cannot be held because of the enactment of PPKM rules in Parapat. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic situation in 2020, all lodging establishments, restaurants, and attractions implement strict health protocols. Some hotels will have to take a policy to close their businesses until June temporarily. However, in July, they reopened their business with a low room occupancy rate. In addition, there are several implementations of health protocols in the dining establishment that must be applied to every dining business in Parapat, such as maintaining distance and providing a sink for visitors.

Abstract

This study investigated the prevalence and types of rhetorical fallacies in the argumentative sections of English education theses, despite overall grammatical accuracy. Drawing on Toulmin’s argument model, cognitive reasoning theories, and nexus-juncture analysis, three-fifty undergraduate theses from three universities in Indonesia were analyzed qualitatively. Common fallacies such as hasty generalization, false cause, strawman, circular reasoning, and either/or reasoning were identified and mapped onto Toulmin’s components (claims, warrants, backing, rebuttals). Findings revealed that students demonstrated competency in grammatical structures but often lacked logical consistency in their arguments which led to flawed reasoning that undermined their thesis statements. The findings recommended that integrating rhetorical fallacy identification into writing instruction could improve both the clarity and validity of student arguments. This study highlighted the need for focused pedagogical strategies to address both grammar and reasoning skills in argumentative writing to promote effective and persuasive academic communication in English education.

Abstract

Abstract

Material management problems in construction projects are one of the main factors that affect efficiency, work safety, and environmental sustainability. Unstructured, mixed, and haphazard material arrangement often results in wasteful costs due to damage or loss of materials, slows down the work process due to time wasted sorting materials, and increases the potential for work accidents due to an unorganized environment. In addition, this condition can also cause disturbances to the surrounding community if the project is in a residential area. Based on the problems identified by construction project partners, the solution offered is the implementation of Portable Material on Site Pallet (PMOS), a simple appropriate technology that functions as a storage medium and grouping of construction materials practically and ergonomically. This activity is carried out through the stages of analyzing field conditions, identifying main problems, designing and making portable pallet prototypes, analyzing technical studies, and implementing and evaluating its benefits in the field. The results show that the socialization and implementation of PMOS can improve workers' understanding of safe and efficient material arrangement, reduce potential hazards due to scattered materials, and speed up the work process in the field. The effectiveness of the innovation is also seen from the reduction in material search time from 40 minutes to 5 minutes, with a total work time efficiency of 15.9%. The socialization of TTG has succeeded in triggering the adoption of tools by the project and shows great potential in supporting K3 and construction productivity in a sustainable manner. In addition to simplifying the material logistics process and extending the service life of construction materials, especially for materials such as steel or reinforcing iron that are susceptible to corrosion.

Abstract

This research examined systematic errors in pseudo-complement clauses and extraposition. The errors included subject-raising issues, verb-complement mismapping, nominalization drift, and filler-gap confusion. These were found in the English writing of Indonesian elementary school students in Medan, North Sumatra and Manado, North Sulawesi. The research used a cognitive syntax framework and applied a qualitative multiple-case study design. Data were collected through free-writing prompts. The findings revealed frequent clause misformations. Common patterns included overuse of “It is + Verb + That/To” constructions, blending of that/to clauses, mislearned subject raising, and poor control of nonfinite clauses. These errors reflected deeper cognitive struggles. Students had difficulty managing clause control, syntactic focus, and verb-complement alignment. The issues were partly influenced by L1 transfer and rote use of lexical chunks. Many students tried to express abstract ideas without sufficient syntactic mastery. These were not isolated mistakes, but signs of developing syntactic representation. The research emphasized the need for clause-based instruction. Such instruction can support both conceptual understanding and grammatical development. The implications for early writing pedagogy and future developmental studies in bilingual contexts were also discussed

Abstract

This study explores the spatial development of Rappocini District in Makassar, Indonesia, through the framework of urban morphology. Utilizing Roger Trancik’s urban design approaches, specifically the figure-ground and linkage methods, the research investigates the district’s land use distribution, building configurations, and circulation systems. The analysis reveals a predominantly angular figure-ground pattern, marked by dense, irregular building masses and minimal open space, indicative of organic, uncoordinated urban expansion influenced by functional and social factors. The linkage structure is dominated by a Mega-Form pattern, where a few primary arterial roads act as the main conduits for movement and connectivity within the area. These spatial characteristics underscore both the complexity and limitations of high-density urban development in the absence of comprehensive planning. The findings contribute to a better understanding of local morphological dynamics and offer valuable insights for guiding context-sensitive and sustainable urban design strategies aimed at improving spatial coherence, accessibility, and quality of life.

Abstract

This study explored how integrating fake news deconstruction, narrative reframing, and editorial simulation enhanced critical media ethics in EFL classrooms. Moving beyond conventional language instruction, it positioned English learning as a site of ideological negotiation and epistemic responsibility. Thirty education students as teacher candidates in North Sumatra engaged in an eight-week task-based curriculum analyzing ethically problematic texts drawn from real-world media. Guided by systemic functional linguistics, critical discourse analysis, and appraisal theory, students rewrote distorted headlines, clarified vague attributions, and reconstructed visual-caption misalignments. Findings revealed that students developed rhetorical precision, ethical awareness, and stylistic maturity, transforming from passive consumers into critical and active media agents. By combining language learning with civic literacy, this study proposed a replicable model for ethical pedagogy in digital times, foregrounding truth-validation, genre critique, and linguistic agency as core components of 21st-century EFL education.
