Abstract

This study tries to expose traditional singer (pesinden) or waranggana life in Kota Malang and Kabupaten Malang. Gender analysis aimed is an analysis carried out to recognize conditional background and problems causing different roles between women and men. Theory used is Giele theory (1977) modified by Hagul (1987: 2-3). This theory focuses on some options taken in life (life option) of traditional singer (pesinden) in Malang. Six measurements used include political activity and behavior, free movement in job field, family establishment and pesinden rights, educational level she reaches, health and sexual attitude in her family and cultural expression in wayang entertainment art community. Those six measurements are used to recognize the status and role of pesinden in family, entertainment art community, and public. Pesinden position in her family is her right in selecting her husband, living right in sexual aspect and her right to propose divorce if there is unharmony in her family, the high status of pesinden in entertainment art community with special reward as high as main ‘level’ niyaga (traditional music player) and status of pesinden in her public with good ‘image’ in her audiences eyes. Pesinden function in her family as mother, as main supporting artist in entertaiment art community and as public organization pioneer in her community.

Abstract

Myth of Murwakala in Javanese Ruwatan addresses fundamental human questions about the origin and arbitrary nature of evil. It tells how the monster Kala, born from the spilt seed of the god Guru, becomes a danger to mankind when he appetites for human flesh. Dalang Kandhabuwana, an incarnation of the god Wisnu, challenges the monster and ultimately neutralizes him by reading from his body the secret words inscribed upon it earlier by the god Guru. A Ruwatan based on the Birth of Batara Kala myth always contains, in some form, these two elements: a presentation of the Kala story; and prayers from a corpus of old and obscure mantras. This article studies philosophically the myth of Batara Kala and its origins discovered in the old Javanese literatures. It elaborates (1) what is myth, (2) the myth of Batara Kala, (3) symbolism of Batara Kala, (4) origins of Batara Kala in Javanese literatures, (5) concluding remarks. The understanding of myth is explored from Schelling’s philosophy, whereas myth of Batara Kala is taken from the Old Literatures of Sastra Parwa and Tantu Panggelaran, as well as from Indian Hinduism’s epistemology. At the end of elaboration I will offer some concluding remarks on Ruwatan in crystalized points of ideas.

Abstract

Ruwatan is an old Javanese ceremony for the purposes of lifting a curse, washing up impending danger, or neutralizing the harmful of evil powers inherent in certain events or situations. These customs are already known by the time of Majapahit periods as kown by literature and temple’s reliefs in that time. The old customs consist of telling “Ruwatan” stories (like the Sudamala). But contemporary Javanese for the “Ruwatan” perform the ruwatan Wayang Lakon Murwakala. We expose in this article those “Ruwatan” performance, and reflect on them, in order to get the deeper meaning of ruwatan in the Javanese culture.

Abstract

The article tries to describe the world the Balinese live, particularly the two opposing powers, namely the negative and the positive forces which influence deeply the way the Balinese lead their lives. Since these forces cannot be easily understood by ordinary people, and so they cannot properly live their religious lives, the role of the priests (Pedanda, Pamangku, etc.), medicine men and women (all kinds of Balian) and other mediums are of great importance. In time of troubles the people can always consult their problems to these elected ones who then recommed the best solutions the people need. The solutions would be any kind of rituals (offerings and sacrifices for the Dewas, propitiations for the Bhutas, cleansing rites, etc) which could maintain the balance between those two opposing powers. How does one call this complex way of life? One may proposes mythology and the other may prefers theology

Abstract

Ruwatan is part of Javanese tradition about the rite of salvation. It is a ritual traditional event by performing wayang puppets with the story of Murwakala, with purpose to live safely and happily, to avoid of becoming victims of Batara Kala, a bad son of god Guru. Those who are regarded as the victims of Batara Kala are called sukerta. This Ruwatan performance is considered as very sacred, it must be prepared carefully. In these recent days, actually the Ruwatan ritual, if it is performed for the public, has been simplified. Only the really crucial stages are held, such as siraman (bathing), having the hair cut, and the puppet show. Some of the Christian people still keep this tradition. It is true that ruwatan contains several moral and religious values. However, the adoption of this traditional rite to be a Christian ceremony needs several modifications and changes. This article offers some suggestions to reflect the ruwatan in the light of biblical perspectives.

Abstract

There is a widespread belief among Indonesian people (especially among the Javenese) that certain people (e.g. only child; a son who has only one brother but no sister) find themselves in a given situation, called sukerto, namely a situation which automatically brings to those people misery, misfortune or at least unpleasant situations. They are destined to be victims of an evil power, the socalled Bathara Kala. In order for them to be freed from this sukerto they should undergo a religious ritual called ruwatan (from the Javenese word ruwat, meaning to free, to release). This ritual consists of, among other things, a performance of Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet) with a special story. Some Roman Catholics (priests as well as lay people) perform ruwatan. They do this for the sake of inculturation of the Gospel, i.e. the process of integrating Gospel’s values into local cultures. They link the idea of ruwatan with some biblical verses; they also compare it with the notion of sin and of indulgence. This short article aims at showing that it is difficult, if not impossible, to adopt ruwatan and adapt it into Christianity.

Abstract

Issues on women in the recent time actually are very distinctive and significant. It is quite prominent that this issue belongs to the social question. In account of the concept that the terminology of “social” means it includes the interests, policis, needs, conscientisation of many sides. Speaking of woman means speaking of life, family, education, participation, human right, deliberation, etc. It is interesting that along its revelation, the Catholic social doctrine did not occupy sufficiently on this issue. Traditionally discusing, the major Catholic sosial doctine puts that issue on the question of man and family at all and generally, indicating that the nature of every woman is arround in the family busines. For that reason, one can pick up the impression that the doctrine does not care on the question yet. In this doctrine, however, issue on women more and more precious. From this point of view, the social doctrine also kept the evolution minded. Woman as the image of God begins the practical implications.

Abstract

In traditional Mariology theologians tend to reflect and present the real intervention of Mary in her relationship with the Church. The problem of this approach is that Mary is not put in her clear and explicit relationship with the Holy Trinity, Christ and the Holy Spirit that enable her to play an unique role in the history of salvation. Consequently, in popular devotion one can find expressions that do not reveal the real place and role of Mary based on the biblical inspiration. Now, in post-conciliar theology there is an urgent need not only to reflect and presentate Mary in her relationship with another mysteries of faith, and especialy in this context, with the Holy Spirit, but also to reformulate the devotional expressions in accordance with theological sensitivities of our day.

Abstract
