Abstract

Ibn Rushd tried to reconcile the dichotomy of religion and philosophy, revelation and reason, in three ways: First, provide a different task area for revelation and reason. Revelation is associated with metaphysical issues, and information of life in the hereafter, whereas ratio is related to the physical problems and nowdays life. Second, reconcile the methods used to, according to Ibn Rushd, the rational method of burhani (demonstrative) used in the philosophical sciences can also be used to analyze the religious sciences. Likewise, the primary premises can be generated not only by rational analysis but also by the texts of revelation, so that the results of religious analysis are as valid as philosophical rational analysis. Third, integrate the goals of achievement; revelation and reason, religion and philosophy are both invited and want to reach the truth, if religion and philosophy have the same goal that is the truth. The truth one can not be in contradiction with the truth others.

Abstract

The development of Christian morality takes a long journey which was started when the Church was born. There were many typical moral cases faced by the Church at each period of time. From one period to another one, moralists came out to solve the cases by giving the right assessment according to the Church’s way of life. A period which was well-known in the journey of Christian morality is the period of the Fathers of the Church. The principle of Christian morality is love which is based on the Gospel and the commandment of Jesus Christ. This was documented in Didache which was used by the Christians at that time. It was the principal moral document of early Christianity. In the development, it was then added by other principals: freedom and justice which were applied in the Christian life. The three principals (love, freedom and justice) formed Christian attitude in respecting other Christians and all people which is applied perfectly by Augustine. The following development of Christian morality was the development of the practice and the profound of what had been laid down before by the Fathers of the Church, with addition of the figure which is excelling in the life as Job, who had been interpreted by Gregory the Great. This writing is ended at this point, because the research is limited from the beginning up to the first development of Christian morality during the period of the Fathers of the Church.

Abstract

This paper tries to search for religious portrait that supports the process of radicalization which is potential in rising social fragmentation; and to study process and dynamics of conflicts, and ethnic, social-economic, political, and intra and inter-religious based radicalism. This study finds out that: Firstly, Surakarta has been known as burning city in political and SARA issues in Central Java and national level. Facts has shown that since 1910 this city witnessed mass riots and amok which are nuanced by ethnic, religious, and political issues. Indeed, some riots outspread their excess and influences to other cities around, such as May 1998 and October 1999 tragedies. Secondly, ideologically Surakarta is one of the well known cities as the breeding ground of radical Islamic groups, and Javanese traditional belief (Kejawen), and they who still firmly grasp their ancestor values influenced by both Kasunanan and Mangkunegeran kingdoms. Lastly, some religious based conflicts and violence and terrorism seem to be contemporary trend of radicalism in Solo.

Abstract

The problem of the process of liturgical inculturation has a special urgency today in Indonesia, since many practices of liturgical inculturation in some catholic parishes tend to be spontaneous, experimental, and so relying on the good will to contextualize celebration of liturgy in their local culture. In this article the author tries to show how the process of liturgical inculturation should be done. The process of liturgical inculturation is always dialectical, given that it demands a reciprocal dialogue between faith and culture. There are some factors to be noticed for achieving a good process of the liturgical inculturation, that are historical factor of the liturgical inculturation in the Church, some criterias of a right and good liturgical inculturation, and the methods of liturgical inculturation. At the end the author shows some challenges of the process of liturgical inculturation in the Catholic Church in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

The focus of this paper is the convergence of Paul Ricouer’s and Emmanuel Levinas’ thoughts concerning the moral responsibility. The role of the mediation between subject and self-understanding would be an appropriate starting point to elaborate such an inquiry. The self-understanding which is one of the hermeneutical categories, according to Ricoeur, represents a decisive moment of the moral awareness. While in the Levinas’ perspective, the appearance of the face constitutes the birth of the moral awareness. Despite this convergence, there is a different approach between both philosophers. Ricoeur’s starting point is text and ego, while Levinas’ thought is based on the ‘other’. So there is a radical difference in the status of alterity which has an implication in the cognition and activity. Levinas refutes the ontology and emphasizes on ethics as experience. While Ricoeur aims at the conditions of possibility of an adequate interpretation which enables to better understand himself/ herself. The concept ‘better self-understanding’ integrates the epistemological and ontological dimensions.

Abstract

The phrase of “the knowledge based economy” has become one of our main questionings in our universities nowdays. With its basic assumption that science can be placed as a commodity that has its own price in the market place, this ideology pushes the concept of the culture of science out of the focus of the university. If before, science played its role as an important clue in the proccess of higher education, now this focus has been turned aside for the sake of money. This background invites us to think more and more about the idea of university. Instead of following the logic of market, this article tries to focus on the eros or the drives to learn as a fundamental nature of university as a community of explorers. The purpose of university is to have the intellectual excellence, to grow in the important truth and to serve the human and the nature.

Abstract

Conditions of religious pluralism are on the increase everywhere. Everybody is coming face to face with believers of other faiths. Those who are not sufficiently equipped with regard to the history and nature of other religions or religious traditions will find themselves in difficulty to interact with ‘the others’. Intolerances, conflicts, and violences of all kinds, which are fundamentaly evil, are just ‘understandable consequences’ that occur throughout our human history. This article tries to offer some insights regarding the struggles of the Christians to comprehend their own position among believers of other faiths and to accept others as partners of dialogue on their way to live out their inner being as Imago Dei and to build up a more humane society, namely a world of friendship and love. Today’s era of dialogue of civilization is actually a great challenge and fertile times for Christians as the pilgrim Church to intensifly develop their spirituality which is intercultural by nature
