Abstract

Sundanese people are familiar with the traditional saying: silih asah, silih asih, silih asuh. This wise saying stands as an ethical principle to guide their attitudes in everyday life. This ethical principle is associated with 3 significant roles and their respective functions in Sundanese community, namely the reverend monk, the king and the father. These roles and their respective functions shape the Sundanese concepts of social relationship in a community, namely equality and functional interconnectivity. The Indonesian Catholic Church, especially in the Diocese of Bandung, can take into account the philosophical implications of this Sundanese saying in carrying out its mission. Bearing the principle of silih asah, silih asih, silih asuh in mind, the Church should proclaim the Good News through intensive involvements and caring services in local communities. This principle, in turn, helps the Church develop its identity properly in a local context

Abstract

This writing focuses on the ecclesiology of Calvin, especially his concept on the unity of the church in The Institutes of the Christian Religions (1536), the first version of the Institutes. In this Institutes we see that the primary accent of his ecclesiology falls on unity. By stressing on the catholicity and universality of the church, Calvin showed his clear thoughts about the unity of the church and the way to achieve it. For him, the way towards the unity of the church was not, first of all, an issue of building up a new structure or a bureaucratic organization for the church. It had to start with the basic issue of faith in Jesus Christ as the Head of the church, which is Christ’s body. Calvin’s view on unity is based on his vision of true catholicity. Catholicity means unity. In order words, Calvin envisioned the unity of the church in a spiritual way

Abstract

Jaques Derrida describes his philosophy as rightly pass for an atheist. However, he also uses the term what/whoever comes to point to God. For him God is the one who always in coming but never arrives and therefore there is nothing in the world and history that is able to represent God. This concept of absolute trancendendy arises the question about God’s immanency which is important to transform the world and history. Referring to Richard Kearney, a contemporary philosopher who creatively and critically intreprets Derrida, this article endevours to study the relationship between trascendency and immanency of God in the philosophy of Derrida.

Abstract

In this article I study the Greek text of Matt. 28:19-20a and search its’ implication for the baptismal and catechetical practices of the Catholic Church. Among the four verbs in this text, the main verb is only the imperative “make the disciples”, the others are participle verbs. It means that the activity of “go” must be directed to “make the disciples” as the purpose. “Baptizing” and “teaching” are the means how this great command can be realized. In this text nothing mentions any instruction or condition before verb “baptizing”, so that the infants can be baptized, as soon as they become Christ’ disciples. The participle of “teaching” follows “baptizing”, it refer any catechetical formation after baptism, especially in the orthopraxis, how become Christ’ disciples. This process is never finished because we are always only the disciples of Christ (cf. Matt. 23:8)

Abstract

In contemporary psychology, the humanistic-existential approach places its center on the sense of life but it should be distinguished from the meaning of life. In this article, after distinguishing the sense form the meaning of life, two specific tools will be considered: Purpose In Life Scale and the Self-Transcendence Scale. Then, other two useful tools will be presented for a clinical intervention: the metacognition functioning (MSAS) and the personality functioning (LPFS). A new proposal to clinicians will be to apply these last two tools in the self-administered form and for the best friend (BF) of the subject; so we can have the self-perception and the perception of others about both, metacognition and personality functioning. Mach more than single items on metacognition and personality functioning, the most relevant to present the basics of the humanistic-existential approach.

Abstract

This paper intends to look for a vision of Christian presence that might be applied in the context of a pluralistic society, such as Indonesia. Therefore, I ventured into the tradition of the 20th century Russian Orthodox Church to look for that possibility. It was Nikolai Berdyaev, a Russian theologian who redefined the direction of church in Russia in his day. He expressed a philosophy of creative freedom in the eschatological perspective of the Orthodox Church. He stressed the importance of human participation in the divine work to resist objectification of the world. I will construct the vision of Christian Berdyaev’s presence, I will look at the thoughts of a theologian of a Calvinist Church in Indonesia, namely, namely Kadarmanto Hardjowasito. He expressed his Christian vision which emphasized exemplarity and openness to other individuals and communities as visions of Christian presence. Both thoughts can build a theological construction for visions of Christian presence in the Indonesian context

Abstract

In this paper the author focuses on the theme of harmony by using the Beduruktradition in Medang hamlet as a starting point for reflection. The harmony in question is harmony between man and God, between man and fellowman and between man and nature. The author believes that so far the beduruk tradition has contributed to the values and wisdoms that are needed to build that harmonies. The emphasis on the theme of harmony actually departs from the author’s own concern about the destruction of nature and the environment, especially in Indonesia. Therefore, through this discussion, the authors hope that whatever forms of human work in cultivating nature, always respect the Creator, respect for human dignity, and respect for nature.

Abstract

Jesus’ teaching on the love of neighbor is excellently presented in the parable of the Good Samaritan. This parable elaborates narratively Jesus’ understanding of the love of neighbor. Learning from Jesus’ teaching from this parable, we can learn how to put in practice the love of neighbor which is surpassing all categories. This discussion and elaboration on the love of neighbor provides a biblical-theological insight into the personhood of the early human embryo. It also helps us to understand how to exercise our personal engagement to the early human embryo as an expression of the love of neighbor.

Abstract

The Dayak community is known as a community that is close to nature, and even, can be said they unite themselves with nature. Nature is a "home" for shelter, a "pool" for fishing and Savannah for hunting wilds animals. Short words, nature is a treasure that is not counted in their lives. Therefore, when nature was damaged by investors for mining and coconut palm plantation businesses, the Dayak community was faced with great difficulties to maintain the sustainability for their own lives, because the nature that sustains their lives today has been damaged and destroyed. The critical question that arises: "How to deal with this challenge and who should help them fight for their rights in the face of greedy investors?” Fighting alone, should be difficult, because they should faced not only investors, but also by two other forces, namely: security authorities and local authorities. For this reason, other institutions are needed to help overcome this difficulty. The Catholic Church is an institution which present among Dayak community and together with them, fighting and protect their rights and lives. The Church's partisanship is a clear evidence of the embodyment of its main mission, that is, proclaiming the Goos News for the people. This noble task, merely, does not layed down in the act of liturgical cult, but also in real action, in concrete actions to fight for the rights, freedoms and the goodness of human life. Through these actions, the Church presents salvation to human being. Of course, the effort and commitment to ptotect local community and nature will produce more a good and better result when done together with other institutions. Therefore, Pope Francis through his Encyclical Letter Laudato Si, invites all parties who are well-wished to be jointly involved in seeking salvation for everyone through concrete efforts, that is, to protect the earth, our common home.
