Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The article discusses the dignity and role of the Catholic laity. The author argues that the differentiation between the laity (laikos) and clerus (kleros) does not emerge in the Scriptures. The term used in the Scriptures is laos, which refers to the chosen people. The differentiation grew as a historical development and, to some extent, created an impression that the laity were the lower group in the Catholic Church. Second Vatican Council has promoted a fresh look at the laity. They are not simply the non-clerical members of the Church. Rather, they are equal members of the People of God with a unique vocation, stemming from one Baptism, to spread the Gospel in the temporal world.

Abstract

In this article, the author discusses environmental crisis, an unintended consequence of modern civilization, in terms of risk. The root causes of the crisis, namely domination of nature, population explosion, and growth-manic capitalist system, need to be properly addressed to avoid societal collapse. Environmental crisis threatens the sustainability of human civilization. Current environmental degradation, thus, must be regarded as a wake-up call for human societies to move toward ecological civilization

Abstract

Inspired by Charles Taylor’s Political Philosophy, the author will argue that to become a meaningful society, Indonesian society first of all has to respect various forms of life in the society. The various forms of life have to live authentically according to its identity, value, and customs in relation with other forms of life that co-exist in the society. The author will also try to apply Taylor’s political philosophy in the context of Indonesian society. In the end, Indonesian context can give certain critical remarks to the development of Taylor’s philosophy

Abstract

The subject of this article is a method that points at a mutually transforming effect. It is concerned with the mental construct (model) on how we understand “reality”. Reality is mediated by “meaning”, a meaning that we give it in the context of our culture or our historical period, interpreted from our own scientific horizon and in our own religious thought forms. The dialogical model presents a way of thinking that is strongly reflective as Asians do to grasp “reality”, their world. It radically shifts our entire view of reality and immensely expands and deepens our grasps of the meaning of life in order to grow in the perception and understanding of reality and then to act accordingly.

Abstract

This article discusses the figure of Vashti, the banished queen in the book of Esther for her refusal to appear at a party hosted by King Ahasueros for his quests. Vashti is a marginal figure in the book and often misjudged as liberal, vain, and wicked. Yet, the writer argues that Vashty can be an inspiration for women and minority groups. Feminist view of Vashti, the writer argues, has opened the possibility to revise the negative view of Vashti. Traditional view, that exalts Esther, actually perpetuates patriarchal system. Instead of Esther, Vashti is more suitable to be a role-model because she dared to challenge the patriarchal system. She can also be a model for minorities for her courage to defend her integrity. Vashti’s example can inspire minorities to stand up for their identity and defend their integrity against unfair threats from the majority. This, for sure, requires enough courage to take risk. Nevertheless, this is not really an option because people who do not have courage to defend their integrity has lost their humanity.

Abstract

This article intends to introduce lay readers to sociological perspectives. Exploring sociological perspectives is a troubling yet rewarding venture. Sociological perspectives stimulate critical questions that challenge people to examine many assumptions they have taken for granted in the course of their everyday lives. Exploring sociological perspectives begins with looking at the world as a socially constructed world reproduced by people in their interrelationships with others. Social world is sustained by social structures which influence and, to a certain extent, shape people’s awareness, choices and behaviors. This is not to say that social structures are immutable facts, exempt from the possibility of change. Reading sociological perspectives helps readers grasp the dynamic interplay between social structures and human agency which underpins the phenomena of social order and change. Sociology bears the badge of being “a trouble maker” for its aptitude to reveal things that are hidden, or sometimes repressed, in social life and perturbs the status quo and those who have benefited from it. Exploring sociological perspectives, however, is rewarding and even fulfilling for those who seek to comprehend society with deeper understanding. Such understanding, in turn, invites and empowers them to get involved in collaborative struggles to weave a better world.

Abstract

Subject and object relations is problematic. This problem is registered in the history of knowledge, especially in epistemology. The problem rises from the ontological status of subject and object. Man, as a subject, is homo rationale. Ratio means non-physic; meanwhile, object belongs to the universe of material being. If knowledge means an object’s mode of being in subject, the question is thus what kind of relation do subject and object have? What is the status of the object in this problematical relation? Karl Raimund Popper has elaborated this question, and this article wants to present this elaboration.
