Abstract

The aimed of this article is to describe the use of denotative and connotative meaning in writing poetry. Writing as an activity carried out by someone in expressing thoughts, idea, and feeling through words. There are several kinds of writing activity that someone can do; one of them is writing poetry. Poetry is one of literary works besides prose and drama, poetry consists of stanzas, lines, rhythms, and rhymes. The meaning used in poetry usually uses two meanings, there are denotative and connotative meanings, and denotative meaning is literal or actual meaning of the word itself, while denotative meaning is a meaning that has a sense and emotional feeling of the word. By using connotative or figurative language, the poetry can be seen more beautiful and contains aesthetic effect. It is also used by the poet to convey something indirectly as variations in writing poetry.

Abstract

The learning process of early childhood emphasizes the process of learning through play, to practice basic skill acquired through play activities. Through play activities children can involve themselves and explore to strengthen the things they have and find new knowledge. The learning process carried out aims to optimize aspects of child development. The learning process by playing strategies are carried out is appropriate with the goals determined goals, and the learning model through play used is guided and directed play, because it tends to use props. The learning process tends to be classical with the same material and method simultaneously and applied to all children, and the learning process has not varied according to the uniqueness of each child, so that the learning process has not conditioned the child to choose the angle of play according to their interests and choices.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has changed many aspects in human life worldwide. Some aspects such economy, social, politic, and education have been impacted by this pandemic. Education is one of crucial aspects that should be concerned. Learning activity has been conducting for several months not through face to face meeting but through online learning and other forms of learning. Some challenges appeared because online learning having some obstacles including in language learning activity of EFL class. This article tries to elaborates some challenges in conducting online learning in listening class at university level. The first challenge is related to the choosing of suitable technological devices, system and application used during the class. The second challenge is the packaging of material delivered so that it will be simplified but not to decrease the quality level of the material. The third challenge is the application of effective method and strategy suit to online learning in listening class. Besides the challenges which are discussed, the solution upon the challenges will be elaborated also in this article.

Abstract

The Problems of the study concerned with whether or not the students’ need English for specific purposes in reading. In addition, the study was done to find out the student’s need in reading comprehension. Total sampling method was used to take the sample. The sample was 11 students from the eighth grade in academic year 2019/2020. A Descriptive method was used in this study. The writer used questionnaires and documentation in collecting the data. The result of study from view of Target needs (necessities) showed that 72.8% claimed that they hope that learning English could support their future works. The result of target needs showed that 45.5% were in beginner level. 81.8% want to be able to master both general vocabulary and Islamic world terms. Moreover, the result of learning needs, input in reading comprehension 72.7% claimed that reading can add English vocabulary. From procedure in reading, 54.5% said that they were agree with arranging random paragraphs or sentences into a correct or logical paragraph sequence of sentence. Next, 90.9% students wanted to do the study outside the classroom, 45.5% claimed that they were strongly agree with activity in discussing and being active in investigation. The last, 54.5% students were strongly agreed that teachers must create an active atmosphere to solve problems and doing assignment.

Abstract

Content analysis can be widely applied in language and literature learning in schools, for example to: describe learning trends (trends); know learning patterns / models; uniqueness of the school / teacher in overcoming problems; predict attitudes, values and school cultural patterns; describe teacher perceptions; and describe learning management ideas. In addition, it can also be used for language and literary research, such as critical discourse analysis, describing elements of literary works, values of literary works, and readers' perceptions of literary works. Content analysis requires researchers who have and can take advantage of their analytical acumen to knit the content of communication phenomena into socially readable phenomena.

Abstract

This research on non-conventional Implications is based on the 5 cm Novel by Donny Dirgantara. A literary work can be researched, enjoyed, and lived in, as well as studies related to real-life images used by the author. Readers can look for implicit meanings, or something different from what the speaker actually says. Therefore, the aim of this study is to look at the conversations of the characters in Donny Dhirgantoro's 5cm novel non-conventional. The method used in this research is descriptive method through a qualitative approach. Based on the results of the research, there are twelve non-conventional data that have the meaning of meaning, namely wanting to imply something with the truth.

Abstract

This article discusses icons, indexes, and symbols in a short story. The semiotic approach is used as a literary approach to discuss this. The short story to be analyzed is the short story Three Stories About the tongue by Guntur Alam. The titles are (1) the death of the bitter tongue, (2) the tongue which tells of jurai; (3) Storyteller Tongue Wars. Each story title will be analyzed using icon, index, and symbol theory. Following is the explanation of the analysis results of the three story titles. Study of icons, indexes, and symbols in the death of the bitter tongue. The icon in the story of the death of the bitter tongue can be seen from the word "bitter tongue", the index can be seen from the incident "the death of the character Mak Yun", and the symbol can be seen from the people's actions, namely distrust of the medical world. Study of icons, indices, and symbols in Tongues that tell the story of jurai. The word Ebok is an icon of a father figure who has passed away. The index can be seen from the condition / fact that the father of my character is a bad person (has two wives). Symbols can be seen from the word sharp nosed, dark skin, bridesmaids, curly hair with thick lips are symbols of someone who is hedonistic. Study of icons, indexes and symbols in the Storyteller's Tongue War. The word coffee shop or coffee shop is an icon of the setting where the tongue war took place. The index was marked on the incident of the tongue war between Cik lam and Cik Mim. Symbol seen from the word grunt which means to breathe hard which indicates a heartbeat that is also beating fast (anger).

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know the instructional analysis in teaching speaking skill. This study participated by one of the Eleventh grader English teachers in SMAN 8 OKU. Data from this descriptive study were gathered by observation. The observational result showed that the English teacher of SMA N 8 OKU used certain types of classroom instruction in the teaching speaking. There were five types of classroom instruction: setting objectives and providing feedback, cues, question and advanced organizer, homework and practice, reinforcing effort and providing recognition, and generating and testing hypotheses
