Abstract

Initial experience can be built through reading activities. With this activity learners will have a stock of knowledge. One method that can be developed for effective reading is PQ4R Robert M. Gagne (in J.J.J Hasibuan and Moedjiono, 1986: 5). The aim of this study:1) To know the activity of students with cooperative learning method PQ4R 2) To know Student learning outcomes with cooperative learning method PQ4R. The subject of the recipients of the action is the students of class XII IPA-1 SMAN I Beber, with the number of students 40 people with details of 19 male students and 21 female students. Data obtained through observation, field notes and review the validity of data examined and analyzed descriptively qualitative and quantitative. The results of Class Action Research: can develop student creativity, understanding the effective learning through the use of PQ4R method can change the teacher's habits from researcher to facilitator and can improve student learning outcomes in a positive direction. The result of research by applying PQ4R method obtained average value of student achievement average value from Pre Cycles stage equal to (69,8) with perfection percentage (17,5%). the average cycle of test II (81.5) with the percentage of completeness (80%) and the final test result of the whole cycle (76.8) with the percentage of completeness (42.5%), sub sumative) on average (86.3) with a percentage of mastery of (100%). Non-test results showed a change in the attitude and behavior of students in the learning process. sThe activities and skills of student cooperation are getting better, along with the development of students' understanding ability on learning English. Thus it can be concluded that learning English through PQ4R method on Explanation Text material, can improve students’ achievement class XII IPA-1 SMA N I Beber Cirebon. Abstract

This study aimed at (1) to figure out the process of the students’ learning in reading comprehension on narratives through Cirebonese local content as based text material at the second grade students of SMPN 1 Jatibarang and (2) to find out the result of the student’s achievement in reading comprehension by using Cirebonese local content based text material in improving their comprehension on narratives at the second grade students of SMPN 1 Jatibarang. The research focused in the second grade I students of SMP N 1 Jatibarang Kabupaten Indramayu in academic year 2017/2018 which consist of 37 students.The study was classroom action research (CAR). The steps of the study are planing the action, implementing the action, observation, and refleting the action. The use of Cirebonese Local Content in reading comprehension can also improve the learning outcome. It can be seen from the results of the study showing an increase in students’ reading comprehension, which is shown by the students’ mean score of reading test results from Cycle I to pre-action activity increased from 64.9 into 76.5. The number of students who achieved a completeness study in the pre-action stage are 14 students. In Cycle I students' mean score increased to 76.5 with 22 students who passed the completeness score. Abstract

Reader’s Theater is one of the strategies that use as a motivational strategy to promoting fluency and comprehension growth for the students especially. Readers’ theater offers students an opportunity for interpretive oral reading as they use voices, facial expressions, and hand gestures to interpret characters in stories. Readers’ theater builds readers’ confidence, brings stories to life through performance, animates content areas, and improves reading ability, comprehension, and oral reading skills.The objective of this study was to find out whether it is significantly difference on students` reading fluency and comprehension between the students who are taught by using reader theater and those who are not. And to find out the factors that affect the students reading comprehension by using Readers Theater. In doing this research, the writer used experimental method; she used one of pre-experimental designs. The participant in this study is the fourth semester students of English Study Program Baturaja University was 20 students from A.II.1. Based on the finding from statistical analysis, it was found that the mean between posttest and pre-test pair was 19.150,. The value of tobtained was 17.665 which was higher than the ttable (from df (n - 1 = 19) was 17,665. And it could be concluded that the used of Readers’ Theater could improve students’ reading fluency and comprehension. It was seen from the differences between the students’ mean score in pre-test and post-test in which the post-test was higher than pre-test. In implementing the readers’ Theater most of the students along this activities all of the students could played their role, express and enjoy reading the script, and it also could contribute to improvement in students’ reading skill. Abstract

This research is aimed at insvetigated; (a)The types of code-switching commonly used by the English teacher and students in class Bahasa. (b)The factors triggering the English teacher and students to use code-switching in class Bahasa. (c)The functions of code-switching used by the English teacher in class Bahasa. This research was conducted through descriptive qualitative method. The samples of the research consisted of one English teacher and students at MA Mafatihul Huda. In order to gather the data, this study used two instruments of research, they were: observation note, and interview. The types of code-switching appearing in the classroom were observed based on the theory proposed by Poplack, while the factors triggering the teachers to use code-switching in the classroom proposed by Holmes, and the functions of code-switching in the classroom were perceived through the functions proposed by Sert. The findings indicate that the types of code-switching are simply find in three types: (a) inter-sentential switching (without inserting new information and which inserts new information), (b) intra-sentential switching, and (c) ekstra-sentential (tagswitching). The factors triggering the English teachers to use code-switching in the classroom is find for four reasons, they are: (a) rhetoric reason, (b) differences of status and formalities, (c) quote other statements or proverbs, and (d) lack of vocabulary. And another factors gather from the classroom setting are: (a) the student’s ability in English are not the same, (b) code-switching emerges automatically or unconsciously, and (c) helping the students to share their ideas. Moreover, the functions of code-switching used by English teachers in the classroom are find for three functions; (a) topic switch, (b) affective function, and (c) repetitive function. Abstract

Folklore has moral value that is meaningful. Moreover, systemic functional linguistics has three lines of meaning to analyse the transitivity of a clause. In this research, the writer tries to figure out the transitivity of folklore, Indonesian and English folklore. This descriptive analysis has 74 clauses for Indonesian folklore and 45 clauses for English folklore. Having analysed the data, the writer found that material process is the most process appeared in both Indonesian and English folklores. Meanwhile, the transitivity’s of Indonesian folklore are material, mental, verbal, relational, and existential. Furthermore, the transitivity’s of English folklore are material, mental, verbal, relational and behavioural. Keywords: transitivity, Indonesian folklore, English folklore.

Abstract

The researcher conducted research about role playing activity in English for business at Gentiaras College. English for business is a compulsory subject for non-English study program. The purposes of this research are to identify the students’ attitude toward role palying activity in the class and the implementation of role play in the class. The participants of this research are 25 students from management study program who take English for business. Questionnaire and interview are used for collecting the data. Those data were then analyzed and tabulated. The result of this study is most students have positive attitudes to role playing activity during studying English for business. Given situation based on the topics and playing the role in the class makes the students more motivated to speak English. This activity eases them to improve and practice their English speaking ability. Key words: Role playing; English for business; students’ attitude

Abstract

The belief and value of teaching as a lifelong learning has long rooted in educational environment. Indonesian context is no exception. Despite of that emerging phenomenon, yet, there are only few evidences that can depict on how such point of view is constructed among EFL teachers in Indonesian context. This study was aimed to investigate EFL teachers’ perception towards teaching as a lifelong learning and to depict the factors that contribute to shape it. This study employed qualitative approach with a case study design. The participant involved were 16 EFL teachers from five different schools in West Java, Indonesia. The data were collected by using questionnaires and interviews. This study used several dependent variables on philosophical of teaching and lifelong learning in order to describe the component that arised from the data collection. The results showed that firstly teachers do believe that learning is inseparable from their identity and profession as educators. Secondly, external factors such as societal and governmental expectation and value have contributively shaped teachers’ belief in teaching as lifelong learning. Abstract

Kahoot! is one of game-based students' response systems (GSRS) that can be used as formative assessment. Formative assessment helps teacher to identify students who struggle to understand the material, to develop skills that they are difficult to acquire, to meet standards competence. Therefore adjustment should be made to the lesson. However, the use of Kahoot! as formative assessment is rarely implemented in Indonesian universities. To fill this void, this study aims to explore the lecture who uses Kahoot! as a formative assessment in their class. The researcher used the construct by Wiliam & Thompson (2007) to characterize formative assessment. The purpose of this study is to reveal more information of the use of Kahoot! as formative assessment in higher education. A qualitative method was presented in this study. The tutor who used Kahoot! as a formative assessment in their class was chosen as the participant. The data were acquired through observation of the tutor. The research findings found out that through Kahoot! as formative assessment, the tutor could develop activities such as clarifying information, doing classroom discussion and also providing feedback. An attractive finding also found that Kahoot! as formative assessment also provides students self-assessment and self-improvement. The result shows that besides being used as a tool for assess students, Kahoot! also provide learners to clarify the question, classroom discussion and also provide feedback, it depends on how the teacher used and forced it. Abstract

This study was implemented in private Islamic secondary school in Yogyakarta. This study aims to support student motivation in studying English with multimedia as the assistance. The use of multimedia such as pictures, videos, and games are expected to create an active atmosphere of learning and teaching. This practice was conducted for four times and the result show that students were very engage while studying English and the class atmosphere become more fun and less monotone. How is the use of multimedia mediates activity to teach formal invitation in a private Islamic Secondary School? I learned that students demonstrated better learning engagement during the lesson. Abstract

The objectives of this study entitled “An Analysis Of Moral Values As Portrayed By Mark Watney’s Characteristics In “The Martian” Movie Script, are: (1) to describe Mark Watney’s characteristics in “The Martian (2015)” movie script. (2) to analyze the moral values as portrayed by Mark Watney’s characteristics in “The Martian (2015)” movie script. The investigation of moral values in this study used a definition proposed by Thomas Lickona. This study used qualitative content analysis approach. The instrument of this research is human as the researcher and the data sheet. The data used of this study are words and sentences. The validity used is theoretical validity and investigator validity. This study indicated that characteristics of Mark Watney is a sense of humor, a supremely chill guy, and a spirit of survival and soul. Moral values that portrayed by Mark Watney’s characteristics is sense of humor, self-control, self-confidence, humility, intellectual curiosity, hard-working, problem solving, courage, and integrity.
