Abstract

Abstract This study attempts to explain how the implementation of jeopardy game in teaching report text, and try to find the strengthnesses and the weaknesses in jeopardy game when implemented in teaching report text. MAN 1 Kota Cirebon was chosen as the place to conduct this study. This study used qualitative case study as methods of the study. A total of 33 students of class X MIPA 2 became participants consist of 13 male students and 20 female students. To obtain data, the writer used classroom observation to find out how the implementation of jeopardy game in the classroom. And to find out the strengthnesses and the weaknesses jeopardy game, the writer used interviews with student representatives from each group. There were 6 students to be interviewed. And the results of the study, the writer explain that the game jeopardy is considered successful because all students can follow the rules in jeopardy game when implemented. The writer also found four strengthnesses and two weaknesses in implementing jeopardy game. The conclusion of this study are Jeopardy Game is considered successful when implemented in tenth grade science two of MAN 1 Kota Cirebon. And the writer find out four strengthness and two weaknesses of Jeopardy Game in teaching report text. Suggestion of this study are Jeopardy Game more suitable implemented in small class or language center, and there is no research about Jeopardy Game implemented in teaching English except about reading comprehenshion. Abstract

The main problem of the recent study is how the concept of English teacher Continuing Professional Development is reviewed from Everett Rogers’ Innovation Diffusion Theory. So, the research aimed at finding the review of the Innovation Diffusion Theory of Rogers toward the concept of Continuing Professional Development of English teachers in Indonesia. This study employed library research as the method and the researcher himself as the instrument to collect data deriving from books as a primer resource and ministry regulation and journal articles as secondary resources. It was conducted through several stages ranging from selecting topics based on the problem; exploring information related to the topic; determining research focus; reading the books, regulations and articles as data resources; recording what was found as research data; and, processing the recorded data. Data were analyzed through induction and interpretation. The result showed that teacher continuing professional development is an implementation of innovation diffusion. It forms a cycle or an endless chain, in which, firstly, innovative work is invented and adopted by innovative teachers; next, it is reported, reflected and published in the form of scientific book, paper or article; then, the scientific work is presented in functional or technical education and training or teacher collective activity as a channel of communication with early adopter teachers; and, the adopter teachers are inspired to make another innovation. Abstract

This study focuses on the analyze the generic structures and language features the editorials of the Jakarta Post to classify the type of exposition text and to know the appropriateness of being teaching material examples in studying a kind of text types. As the subject, six of editorials of the Jakarta Post published in August, 2020 were chosen randomly. The object is the generic structures of the editorials. Then, documentation is used as a technique of data collection to be analyzed and classified by using a book entitled “Text Types” by Mark and Kathryn, and a book entitled “English for Social Purpose” by Jenny Hammond to determine the appropriateness to be teaching material of genre. The results showed each editorial of the Jakarta Post consist of three generic structures, (1) thesis that introduces the topic, (2) series of arguments, (3) Summing up or recommendation as a conclusion that restate editorial writer’s point of view. Based on the features of the generic structures the two editorials belong to Hortatory Text and the rest belong to Analytic Text. All of the editorials also contain four features of a good argument, (1) clearly expressing point of view, (2) using reasons to support the argument, (3) using evidence to prove the argument, (4) showing cause and effect (conclusion) and appropriate to be teaching material. Abstract

The objectives of the study are to describe and analyze the types of presupposition and the belief of those candidates. This study utilizes qualitative descriptive method. The writer picked archive document analysis research procedure in breaking down the information. This research applied the types of presupposition by Yule (1996) and Belief by Van Dijk (1998). The analysis showed that there are six types of presuppositions such as: Existential, Factive, Lexical, Structural, Non-Factive and Counter-Factual Presupposition. When delivering their belief, both candidates using conjunction, context, coherence and also cohesive. First candidate’s belief, Hillary Clinton, showed her personal beliefs because Hillary knew everything how to be a president, how to lead the country, how to work with other country and how to get new jobs to make American be better because Hillary had sufficient experience. Apart from that, Hillary takes the name of President Obama to strengthen the belief that all people have more confidence in her because she presents the facts in accordance with the actual situation. While, the second candidate, Donald Trump examines social beliefs because he explores what happens to their country, including the greatest financial crisis. Donald claims of his own great deeds as a result that had given birth certificates for president. Besides, Donald also claimed that Hillary who had experience as the secretary of the state was not so astute in leading this country and it was evident from the phenomenon occur, many failures made by the present government that making a loss for the country. Abstract

This study used weblog to improve the students’ writing skill and took the second-grade students at junior high school Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja. Then, to take the data, the reserchers used the pre-experimental design. The objective was to find out whether there was any significantly effective to improve students in writing skill by the use weblog to the eighth-grade student of SMP Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja. This study took VIII.B that consisted of 18 students as the sample by applying cluster random sampling. The data was collected by using test. The test was in from of writing test. The data obtained through test and analysis was done by using statistical analysis (paired sample t-test). The result it was found the mean score of pretests was 50 and the mean score of posttests was 73,55. Based on the data analysis the researcher concluded there was significantly effective to use weblog to improve students writing skill descriptive text at SMP Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja before and after treatment. Since, the sig. (2-tailed) =0.000 less than significant level (?=0.05), the writers concludes that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that there is significant effect in using a weblog to improve students writing skill at SMP Sentosa Bhakti Baturaja. Keywords: writing skill; weblog; descriptive text

Abstract

This study aimed to find out EFL students’ speaking ability in a descriptive text. This research was a descriptive survey. The participants were chosen by using cluster random sampling technique where there were twenty students at the eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 4 OKU. The data were collected through oral test in the form of online test and telephone survey. WhatsApp application was used as an online platform in data collection. The result of the study showed that the total of students’ score was 1142 and mean of the students’ score was 57,1. There were 1 student (5%) who gains score 80-100 in very good criteria, 2 students (10%) who gain score 66-79 in good criteria, 10 students (50%) who gain score 56-65 in enough criteria, 5 students (25%) who gain score 46-55 in low criteria, and 2 students (10%) got score 45 in fail criteria. Based on the data, there were only 13 students (65%) who passed the students’ speaking ability. In conclusion, the frequency of criteria of students’ speaking ability is in enough criteria. Abstract

While it is still rewarding nowadays to use storytelling in language classroom, it mostly used in kindergarten, secondary, adult, and higher education respectively. Studies of English by storytelling are uncommon in the higher education and undergraduate levels and the way to increase technology is preferred to be a part of the language classroom, particularly in teaching speaking.Teaching speaking has the function of reducing certain disincentives. The instructor needs to provide learning opportunities as much as possible.Then there is also a need for an engaging learning environment to stimulate the drive of the students to speak.Digital storytelling is a media-based story to help the learners find a better way to discover the target language's ability to communicate. Digital storytelling media is a combination of text, voice, narration, music, sound effects, pictures, and graphics to create a fictional or non-fictional interactive narrative. This study aimed at investigating whether or not digital storytelling effective to improve the students’ speaking skills. This experimental study was participated by 26third semester students of BaturajaUniversity,, majoring in English Education Study program.The study revealed that it was effective to use digital story telling in improving the third students’ speaking ability of Baturaja University. Abstract

The study is aimed at finding the students’ perception on the using of Google Classroom for writing skill at vocational high school. This research generally answered the question: What are student’s perception on the using of Google Classroom for writing skill? The data was collected through interviews. There were 5 students of tenth grade as the participant. This research explored the students’ perception which came from the students’ experiences during COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract

As a multicultural country, Indonesia has many cultures that must be taught to its people, especially to university students through some university subjects. However, not all students understand well about their own culture, which becomes one of the main concerns of the lecturer and the students themselves. Therefore, the curriculum is then designed to enable students to learn about the culture aside from their courses. One of the lessons that also allows students to understand their own culture is English. In this study, the researcher chooses English II, the English lesson given to second-semester students. Students are encouraged to learn the language during the English class while also learning the Indonesian culture to know more about it and raise their awareness to preserve it. Some topics included Indonesian Literature, Wayang and Other Indonesian Art Performances, and some other issues that may be closely related to the Indonesian culture substances. The lesson problems were presented in some ways, including presentation, discussion, storytelling, and role-play. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how Indonesian culture is embedded in students’ lesson materials. This study uses observation and documentation as to its data collection. Meanwhile, the study revealed some classroom activities and assignments that indicate the implementation of the Indonesian culture in English II Classes. Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the type of English learning strategies as foreign language used by athlete students and to analyse on how to use language learning strategies in learning English as foreign language to their achievement in English speaking skill. This research was conducted on six athlete students in Sport Language Center of Surabaya who are able to speak English in International Competition. The data for this research were taken from observation and filling up questionnaire analysis. It can be concluded that language learning strategies in learning English as foreign language for the students were very useful and helpful. The learning strategies are believed to be responsible for successful language acquisition and significant in language learning. Thus, in learning English as a foreign language, appropriate language learning strategies were significant. Athlete students who are swimmers in Sport Language Center needed to know how to learn, and swimmer coach needed to know how to facilitate his process in teaching English. Hopefully this research can also inspire other researcher who are interested in conducting research on other aspects of language learning strategies.
