Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of critical thinking skills among junior high school students in solving mathematical word probleims, as evident from previous studies and the researcher's initial observations in the field. This study aims to describe the profil of junior high school students' errors in solving mathematical story problems in terms of critical thinking skills. The method used is qualitative descriptive with 32 seventh-grade students as subjects at a public junior high school in South Tambun in the 2024/2025 academic year. The research instrument was an essay test containing five story problems developed based on critical thinking ability indicators, including providing simple explanations, providing further explanations, determining strategies and techniquies, and drawing conclusions. The data were analyzed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that most students were in the low critical thinking ability category (63%) and the rest were in the moderate category (37%), while no students reached the high category. Students with low critical thinking abilities tended to make mistakes in almost all indicators, while students with moderate abilities were able to meet most of the indicators but were not consistent, especially in determining solution strategieis and drawing conclusions. These findings indicate that the main weakness of students lies in the aspects of strategy planning and drawing conclusions, so mathematics learning that emphasizes the development of critical thinking skills through non- routine story problems and the use of targeted assessment rubrics is needed.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning ability is an essential aspect of mathematics education, especially for Tadris Mathematics students who are prepared as future educators. One internal factor that may influence this ability is personality type. Introverted and extroverted students differ in the way they process information and make decisions, which may lead to distinct characteristics in their reasoning abilities. This study aims to analyze the mathematical reasoning abilities of students in solving linear programming problems by considering introverted and extroverted personality types at the State Islamic Institute of Kerinci. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling and consisted of four Tadris Mathematics students whose personality types had been identified through the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test. The research instruments included a personality questionnaire, a mathematical reasoning test, and interview guidelines. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that introverted students tend to demonstrate more thorough, in-depth, and systematic reasoning when solving problems. They are more careful in choosing methods and drawing conclusions. In contrast, extroverted students tend to reason more quickly and directly. They focus more on the final result, present their answers concisely, and are more flexible in selecting problem-solving strategies, although they sometimes pay less attention to process details.

Abstract

Students' mathematical problem-solving abilities are classified as very low, in part due to the lack of use of media variations linked to contextual materials. Based on these conditions, this study focused on developing digital learning media in Articulate Storyline using an ethnomathematics approach to ensure validity and effectiveness in improving eighth-grade students' mathematical problem-solving abilities in the topic of relations and functions. The research and development method applied is the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The sample of this study consisted of eighth-grade students at MTs Satu Atap Biroyatul Huda Cilongok, with the instruments used including interview guidelines, validation questionnaires, interestingness questionnaires, and tests. Media experts assessed this media as very valid based on validation results, with an average of 83.33% for the ethnomathematics material and context experts 83,5% and 95% for the mathematics teachers. The results of small-group trials showed that the percentage of interestingness reached 96.67%, and field trials reached 89.06% with a very interesting classification. The effectiveness test using N-Gain showed that the experimental class had an average N-Gain of 0.755 (high), while the control class had an average N-Gain of 0.3979 (moderate). The N-Gain effectiveness interpretation shows that the experimental class is classified as effective at 75.5%, while the control class is classified as ineffective at 39.79%. Therefore, digital learnin media based on Articulate Storyline, with an ethnomathematics approach, have validity and effectiveness in improving students' mathematical problem-solving abilities.
