Abstract

This study was motivated by the low reading skills (maharah qira’ah) of students and the importance of using a meaningful learning approach. It aimed to examine the effect of the contextual teaching approach on improving the reading skills of ninth-grade students at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Soebono Mantofani and to explore its implementation in the learning process. The research employed a mixed-method design with an explanatory sequential approach, in which quantitative data were first collected through pretests and posttests and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test, followed by qualitative data obtained through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student questionnaires to strengthen and explain the quantitative findings. The participants consisted of 42 ninth-grade students divided into experimental and control groups. The quantitative results indicated a significant improvement in students’ reading skills after the implementation of the contextual teaching approach, with an Asymp. Sig value of 0.000 < 0.05, supported by the N-Gain results showing that 81% of students were in the high improvement category and 19% in the moderate category. The mean score of the experimental class increased more substantially than that of the control class, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis and acceptance of the alternative hypothesis. Qualitative findings revealed that the success of contextual learning was influenced by high student motivation, the relevance of learning materials to real-life contexts, the use of text and image-based instructional media, an interactive classroom environment, and the accommodation of individual differences in students’ vocabulary and reading experience. Therefore, the contextual teaching approach was proven effective in enhancing reading comprehension and making learning more meaningful, practical, and oriented toward deeper understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the formation of shared meaning in the beseprah ritual within the Erau tradition of Kutai Kartanegara by applying the perspective of ritual communication theory, particularly through symbolic interaction and the construction of social reality. The research employs a qualitative approach with an interpretive case study design, using purposive and snowball sampling techniques to involve religious leaders, government officials, community figures, tourism ambassadors, and residents engaged in both the preparation and implementation of beseprah. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, then analysed thematically through stages of transcription, coding, categorization, and interpretation focused on ritual symbols, interaction patterns, and participants’ experiences of meaning. The findings reveal that beseprah creates shared meaning about togetherness and equality through the spatial arrangement of face-to-face seating, the use of white cloth as a food mat, collective prayers, the gong struck by the Sultan, and the practice of communal dining without social status barriers. These symbolic interactions construct a social reality of closeness between leaders and the people, a collective identity as a harmonious and cooperative community, and the preservation of local culture, which today is also mediated through social media. The study concludes that the beseprah ritual functions as a space of ritual communication that sustains identity, social solidarity, and the imagination of an egalitarian society, while simultaneously enriching the study of ritual communication and Islamic communication rooted in local wisdom.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the forms of da'wah communication interaction among pilgrims at the Tomb of Syekh Quro in Karawang, and to analyze how culture and religion function as a symbolic system from the perspective of Clifford Geertz’s interpretive theory. The research employs a qualitative approach with an interpretive ethnographic design, involving pilgrims, caretakers, religious figures, tomb managers, and village officials as informants selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation. The findings show that da'wah communication interaction manifests in the form of congregational prayers, recitation of tahlil and manaqib, oral advice, and nonverbal symbols such as gestures of respect and the arrangement of sacred space. All of these frame the pilgrims’ spiritual experience and reinforce the value of tawhid. Culture and religion appear as a layered symbolic system through the Sabtuan night tradition, narratives about Syekh Quro’s piety, and the presence of physical artifacts such as the tomb, mosque, and trees believed to bring blessings. Together, these form patterns of collective meaning and the community’s religious identity. The study concludes that the Tomb of Syekh Quro functions as a culturally based da'wah space, where local symbols become an effective medium for spreading Islam amid the dynamics of religious tourism and social change. These findings contribute to the development of da'wah communication studies and religious studies by demonstrating the relevance of the interpretive approach in reading pilgrimage practices as living cultural texts.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the ideal characteristics of society in the Qur’an through an interdisciplinary approach combining sociology and anthropology. Amid the contemporary crises of morality and social disintegration, the concept of a Qur’anic society offers an integrative model of civilization. This research employs a qualitative method using a library research design through thematic analysis of Qur’anic verses related to social life. The analysis integrates sociological and anthropological theories to examine how revelation functions as a system for the formation of civilization. The sociological findings indicate that the Qur’an establishes social structures based on the principles of egalitarianism (musawah), justice (‘adalah), and solidarity across social identities. Anthropologically, revelation acts as an agent of cultural transformation that shifts primordial and tribal mentalities toward a civilized and universal human consciousness (tamaddun). The study concludes that the characteristics of a Qur’anic society are not merely static theological concepts, but rather a dynamic system of values capable of integrating vertical transcendental relationships with horizontal social relations in order to achieve harmonious social order.

Abstract

The era of technological disruption has created new challenges for parenting, in which children are more exposed to virtual figures than to their parents, leading to a crisis of role modeling within the family environment. This study aims to integrate Abdullah Nashih Ulwan’s concept of exemplary behavior (Al-Qudwah) into parenting strategies in the digital era. The research employs a qualitative approach based on library research using content analysis through an interpretative approach toward Abdullah Nashih Ulwan’s work Tarbiyatul Aulad fil Islam. The findings reveal that the integration of Ulwan’s concept in the modern context requires parents to transform into “digital role models.” Exemplary behavior is no longer limited to offline conduct, but also includes wise technology use (digital wisdom), consistency in managing screen time, and persuasive supervision. This study further demonstrates that Ulwan’s concept of exemplary parenting can be reconstructed into a religious value-based digital parenting model that is adaptive to the development of modern technology. The study concludes that Ulwan’s values of exemplary conduct remain relevant as a moral foundation for shaping children’s religious character amid the massive flow of technological information.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the Balimau Kasai tradition in Air Tiris Village functions as a medium for da’wah communication by employing the perspectives of Social Interaction theory and Kurt Lewin’s Field Dynamics theory. The analysis focuses on four aspects: the social environment, cultural structure, social change process, and intergenerational interaction. The method employed is qualitative research with a case study design, involving customary leaders, religious figures, female figures, and community members as purposively selected informants, through in-depth interviews, limited observation, and documentation study. The findings reveal that the social environment of Balimau Kasai creates an inclusive and religious interaction field, in which customary practices and Islamic values are closely intertwined in ritual stages such as grave visitation, tabligh akbar, donation for orphans, mandi balimau, and traditional games, thereby effectively serving as a vehicle for the internalization of da’wah values. Social changes resulting from education, migration, and modernization do not necessarily erode the tradition; rather, they encourage meaning negotiation and adjustments in its implementation. Meanwhile, intergenerational interaction ensures the transmission of spiritual, cultural, and Islamic da’wah values through dialogical and collaborative communication patterns. In conclusion, Balimau Kasai in Air Tiris represents an adaptive cultural da’wah model that remains firmly rooted in Malay Islamic identity, and Lewin’s theoretical framework proves effective in explaining the social dynamics that sustain the continuity of the tradition.
