Abstract

The role of the spiritual heart in transformation and reformation is vital. However, the dynamism of change emanating from the heart is less understood. Using the work of al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111), this paper centralises the noetic of the spiritual heart and its roles as a learning medium and a change agent. The heart is then conceptually operationalised within the national settings, particularly its role in whole-of-nation moral learning. This is further illustrated by a whole-of-nation moral learning trajectory situated within Brunei’s governance context, which is the (re)Islamisation of the national education system during three periods: pre-independence 1984, post-independence, and the new norm. The case showed the important roles of virtuous leaders to push for moral changes, followers to also engage in moral learning to suppress immoral learning, structures and cultures to be institutionalised to perpetuate moral learning, and selective international relations to catapult local progress.

Abstract

This paper describes the thoughts of Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid on the theory of Al-Qur’an interpretation, with a descriptive-analytic analysis. The data were collected from various sources from Nasr’s writings, books, and journals that wrote about Nasr and his thoughts, as well as other sources that had relevance for analysis purposes. Abu Zaid tries to reveal the meaning and significance (magza) which then brings out the meaning of “the ineffable”. In this case, the meaning is represented by the text or in the sense that it lets the text speak about itself. Then, from that meaning, there is a dialogue with the conditions or contexts that surround a reader. Therefore, the meaning is static because it contains historical meaning, and the significance is dynamic in accordance with the horizon of each reader.

Abstract

In the context of the relationship between Islam and democracy along with human rights, Islam represents two opposing positions (the two faces of Islam). On the one hand, Islam is seen as a religion of compassion (raḥmat li al-‘ālamīn), respects plurality, upholds tolerance and cares about human rights. On the other hand, Islam is often identified with separatism, discrimination, intolerance and violent phenomena. In Islamic countries and Muslim-majority countries, violations of human rights frequently occur. Islam often appears with a double face. In addition to being a source of law to bring about peace, it is often used as the basis for violent ideologies from state’s repressive policies to terrorism movements. This article elaborates on the basic concept of human rights in Islam and the dynamics of protecting and upholding human rights. Using a conceptual approach, this study aims to seek religious awareness in the midst of globalization where religion can strengthen the concepts of human rights. When religion is used as a source in the rational policy framework of a country, especially the protection and enforcement of human rights, it can be ascertained that human rights in that country will flourish and will be accepted by the citizens.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the phenomena that occur in the community related to respect for the Red and White Flag and national commitment in the perspective of hadith. This study uses a qualitative approach. Qualitative approach is the process of solving the problem under study by describing the object of research in detail. The data collection technique in this study uses library research in the form of documentation studies, namely books that are relevant to hadith texts. The analysis technique used is through three paths, namely: first, data reduction, which is defined as the process of selecting data; secondly, presenting data; thirdly, drawing conclusions. As for the results of this study, the opinion which says that respecting the flag as a shirk behavior does not have a strong argument. They consider that respecting the flag is not included in worship. so respecting the flag means respecting inanimate objects, respecting inanimate objects is including shirk. The implications of the results of this study can at least provide input to policy makers that normatively, mainly based on hadith, that respecting the flag as a symbol of the state is permissible. In general, this research has provided an understanding that respecting the red and white flag is a form of national commitment that must be preserved continuously.
