Abstract

Politeness strategies are a crucial element in conversations. Choosing the appropriate politeness strategies would lead to a smooth talk between the Speaker (S) and the Hearer (H). Preferred politeness strategies are different among different racial groups and also genders. In the case of an interview, the interviewer needs to suit his/her choice of politeness strategies to the interviewee’s preference so that the interviewee would feel comfortable in answering the interview questions. Thus, this current study aims to (1) examine the politeness strategies used by Desi Anwar in the interviews with Queen of Denmark Margrethe II and President Erdogan; (2) examine whether or not the choices of politeness strategies follow the preferred politeness strategies for men and women. The research questions are 1) What politeness strategies are used by Desi Anwar in the interviews with Queen of Denmark Margrethe II and President Erdogan? (2) Do the choices of politeness strategies follow the preferred strategies for men and women? The findings show that in interviewing Queen Margrethe II, Desi Anwar used to notice H, including both S and H, seeking agreement, being optimistic, and giving compliments as the politeness sub-strategies; one of them, i.e., compliment, is in line with females’ preferred politeness sub-strategies. However, in interviewing President Erdogan, Desi Anwar does not give any politeness sub-strategies preferred by males. It shows that it is easier for Desi Anwar to choose the appropriate politeness sub-strategies when she has an interviewee of the same gender.

Abstract

This research used a qualitative approach with descriptive design in order to find the translation shifting utilized by the translator from English to Indonesia and the translation quality assessment. The data were taken from the novel entitled Me Before You written by Jojo Moyes (2012) and from Indonesian-translated novel by Tanti Lesmana published in 2013. Furthermore, this research used Catford’s theory and Nababan et al., with the other theories, to find out the answer in the analyzing process. Catford divided translation shift into two, level shift and category shift. There are four types of category shift; structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift. The result showed that there were category shift that found in the data, which consist 28 unit shifts (57%), 12 intra-system shifts (23%) and 10 class shifts (20%). Translation quality assessment in three data shows less accuracy level dan the overall data indicates high accuracy level, high acceptability level, dan high readability level. As the implication, the result of this research has provided several new insights regarding the category shift in a written work which can be such a reference for other researchers in doing the similar focus of research.

Abstract

The objective of this article was to analyse the types of movement transformation which is applied in Bahasa Indonesia. This article aims to collect ideas, theories, and reported empirical data within the context of scholarship in the library. The theory used in this article was taken from the theory of Transformational Generative Grammar (TGG) introduced by Noam Chomsky. This article was an attempt to highlight how Chomsky’s concept called movement transfssormation works in Bahasa Indonesia. The data were taken from some sentences in Bahasa Indonesia. In this article, the sentences were analysed by using IC analysis. IC analysis is a method of analysing sentences by dividing them into their constituent structures. The methods used in analysing sentences were bracketing and tree diagram. Some types of movement transformation that were applied in Bahasa Indonesia were Affix Hopping, Interrogative (Aux Movement), Wh-Movement, Passive Transformation, Dative Movement, Topicalization, Particle Movement, and Relative Movement.

Abstract

This study was the correlation between language learning strategies and students’ thinking styles. This study aimed to determine whether there is a significant correlation between language learning strategies and student thinking styles. This study used a quantitative correlational approach as a research method. The data were collected by Likert scale questionnaire. The research data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 program. This program was used to find out whether there is a significant correlation between language learning strategies (X) and students‟ thinking styles (Y). The result of the questionnaire showed there is a positive correlation between language learning strategies and student thinking styles. It can be proved by the correlation coefficient (r count) and significance value (ρ) got from the calculation r count = 0.507, ρ = 0.002 < 0.05. Based on the findings of the data analysis, there is positive significant relationship between language learning strategies and student thinking styles of students’ English education department IAIN Langsa.

Abstract

Until the 20th century, the AM script was extensively used to teach religious literature and for creative expressions among Mappilas (Muslims in Malabar) in Kerala. Most of the Mappila songs were written in AM script. The literary tradition of Mappila Muslims of Malabar is evident in the AM literature that includes Romantic Ballads, Folk Tales and Battle Songs. AM periodicals had an important role in the social reformation of the Mappilas. Several periodicals were published in AM language to preach the basic tenets of Islam to the commoners and to make them aware of the evil practices and superstitions existed in those days. This study treats AM as a contact language and it aims at isolating the contact induced elements in AM. The empiric foundation of the present study is the extensive data collected from AM literature representating different period and from different genres. The works used for data collection were Mohiyudheen Maala (1607 A D), Nool Maduhu (1737 AD), The Padappattu (War Songs) of Moyeen Kutty Vaidyar (1852AD to 1892 AD), and Chaar Dharwesh (1883 AD). The results of this study indicate that there are various borrowing patterns of grammar that occur in ARABI-MALAYALAM language contacts such as; Coordinating Conjunctions, Number Markers, Adjectives etc.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types of category shifts that can be found in this novel and translated novel. In this study, the translator uses category shifts for several sentences, words, clauses, and phrases, as evidenced by the 100 data the researcher collected. It has been proven that 35 data use the Category Shift technique, and 15 use the Class Shift technique. Furthermore, 25 data using the unit shift technique and 25 data using an intra-system shift in this study also analyzed whether shifting in translation would affect the quality of the translation. The quality of the translation was measured using parameters from Nababan and the obtained results. The use of shifting techniques on the quality of translation, as measured through Nababan's theory, produces an average score on aspects of accurate 3, aspects of accelerable 3, and readable 3.

Abstract

Language performance is the output of an individual’s language learning. In specific, speaking may serve as an indicator of students’ language skills. Second graders at a private secondary school, Maqamam Mahmuda, Takengon, Indonesia, had poor proficiency in this skill, particularly in English, with a median score of 34. The inefficient teaching and learning methods were to blame for this low achievement. As a result, it was proposed that a focused approach to the learning process be used. This study aims to determine whether integrating the inquiry and learning community may improve students’ English-speaking skills. It is expected to encourage students’ engagement in a learning group, predominantly speaking. In detail, the study focuses on how appropriately students perform in simple dialogue and monologues, and personal recounts following social function, general structure, and appropriate and contextual language elements. An experimental strategy using a one-group pretest and post-test design was employed to accomplish the study’s objective. Twenty pupils were randomly chosen as the treatment sample from a total population of 58 students. The outcome demonstrates that the students’ comprehension and pronunciation of English were significantly enhanced, from 34 to 60. The finding promotes the approach as a positive way to enhance students’ interest, comprehension, and confidence to speak in classroom interactions.

Abstract

Productivity in conducting research and publishing articles is the obligation of lecturers as academics. However, due to their failure to follow international writing conventions, they have difficulties in writing for international publications. Various studies have investigated the rhetorical move of research articles; however, much still needs to be investigated on the rhetorical move of the research articles written by highly reputable lecturers by comparing their publications in low-impact versus high-impact Scopus-indexed journals. This study aims to analyse the rhetorical structures of research articles in low and high-impact articles written by highly reputable lecturers in one of the universities in West Java in science and technology. Eight research articles were analysed through the framework of the move proposed by Maswana et al. in 2015. The results showed similarities and differences between the two groups. Stating a purpose, methods, and results in the abstract section was obligatory. In the method section, recounting an experimental process was always present in both groups. Interestingly, the difference was shown in stating the research implications in the conclusion part, where high-impact frequently used the move more than low-impact articles. The results show that the impact factor partly projects rhetorical moves in the research articles. This study is expected to be a useful reference for Indonesian lecturers to develop their awareness of writing an impactful research article.

Abstract

Evaluation has been an essential component of the teaching and learning process for as long as it has been a part of the teaching and learning process itself, which is something that takes place all the time at every educational institution. This is because the assessment has a tight link with educators in the process of transferring information to analyze how much students' abilities have developed over the course of the learning process and while assembling each assignment in the process of learning. This study tries to shed light on the index of difficulty index found in a set of prediction test in Ekadanta tutoring book. This study employed descriptive qualitative approach. The data source was 20 questions from Ekadanta tutoring book. The subject of this study were 11 students of English Department at Universitas Iskandarmuda, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The data collection was carried out by instructing the students to do the test within 40 minutes. After the data obtained, they were analyzed using index of difficulty formula and categorized into its index level. The results shows that from 20 question, there are 8 questions fall under difficult index, 8 questions are categorized into moderate, and the other 4 questions are considered easy in the level of difficulty index. It is concluded that the test is good and descent from the perspective of the difficulty index. It is later suggested that future research would involve more questions and test sets as well as participants in studies alike.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced the traditional learning system to be replaced with an online learning system or remote teaching. Several studies outside the Indonesian context state that the implementation of the remote teaching method has become a common thing to do. However, in the Indonesian context, the remote teaching method is something new, so that it makes teachers face several problems during the learning process. Thus, the factors that limit the implementation of remote teaching are also definitely different, especially in the Indonesian context. This study aims to find out more clearly about teacher perceptions through limiting factors in the implementation of remote teaching related to what is found in the literature review matrix from several studies outside of the Indonesian context and in the Indonesian context. Many researchers have examined this case, but most only use one research method, qualitative or quantitative. Therefore, this study tries to present different data using mixed methods (qualitative methods using a literature review matrix and interviews, then quantitative methods using questionnaires) so that the data obtained is stronger and more valid. The participants in this study were three high school English teachers. The results of this study indicate that there are nine limiting factors found in the literature review matrix and these factors were confirmed by the subjects. Therefore, the obstacles in remote teaching must be identified to be used for improving the learning process itself, for the government (Ministry of Education and Culture), for the school, teachers, and students.
