Abstract

The ability of junior high school students to solve algebra word problems in learning mathematics is an important part and must be mastered well.  However, the results of observations carried out by researcher at one of the junior high schools in Yogyakarta showed that students had difficulty solving and understanding algebra word  problems. In addition, when working on assignments given by the teacher, students tend to rely on the results of their friends' work without showing the initiative to learn independently. Therefore, this research aims to analyze students' difficulties in solving algebra word problems in terms of their self-directed learning. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with the research subjects being all class VII students in one of the junior high schools in Yogyakarta. The data collection techniques in this research used a self-directed learning scale and a learning difficulties test. The research results show that students with high self-directed learning are able to solve problems in algebra word problems, but are less careful in obtaining the final results. Students in the  middle self-regulated learning category are experiencing difficulties in writing descriptions and simplifying and operating algebraic multiplication and division operations. Meanwhile, students with low self-regulated learning have difficulty understanding the concept of algebraic operations and applying it in the context of algebraic word problems. It is hoped that the research findings will provide an idea for teachers to train students' self-regulated learning so that their ability to solve algebra word problems can be even better.

Abstract

Learning mathematics in inclusive classes has its own challenges. This is due to the heterogeneity of student characteristics in the class. Therefore, special knowledge is needed that prospective teacher students must have to deal with inclusion classes, so this research aims to analyze students' readiness to teach in inclusion classes. Qualitative descriptive research was used to describe the results of interviews regarding the readiness of 16 mathematics education students at one of the state Islamic universities in Indonesia. The results of the research show that students in semesters 5 and 7 have good understanding and show readiness to teach in inclusive classes, while students in semesters 1 and 3 also have good readiness to teach in inclusive classes, but they still need prior training in inclusive education courses before being placed in inclusion classes because understanding about children with special needs is still limited. This research has an impact on increasing the skills and empathy of prospective teachers, access and achievement of students with special needs, the quality and readiness of educational institutions, inclusive education policies, as well as public awareness of the importance of inclusion and social acceptance.

Abstract

Indonesia's mathematical literacy levels remain low, as evidenced by its poor performance in PISA rankings over the past decade. One contributing factor is the students' unfamiliarity with PISA-type problems, which emphasize content, context, and process skills. The Siger Tower, an iconic landmark in Lampung, offers a multifaceted context encompassing tourism, arts, culture, religion, and education. This study aims to develop valid, practical, and potentially impactful PISA-type mathematics problems using the Siger Tower as context to enhance mathematical literacy. The research employs a design research methodology with two phases: preliminary design and formative evaluation. The formative evaluation phase includes self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one testing, small group testing, and field testing. Data analysis is conducted using descriptive methods. The study produced ten PISA-type mathematical problems contextualized with the Siger Tower. These problems were validated in terms of content, construct, and language by expert reviewers and through one-to-one testing. Practicality was assessed during small group testing, and potential impacts on mathematical literacy were evaluated during field testing. The findings indicate that the developed problems effectively engage various basic mathematical skills, thereby promoting mathematical literacy.
