Abstract

Background: Low knowledge about vulva hygiene during menstruation among adolescent girls is a major problem that can contribute to the risk of reproductive organ infections. This community service programme aims to increase adolescent girls' knowledge about vulva hygiene during menstruation through education using silent audiovisual media. Methods: The activity was conducted in the Olehsari Village Office Hall on 4–5 June 2022, involving 76 adolescent girls aged 10–21 years as partners, selected using purposive sampling. Socialisation, counselling, and evaluation were carried out using a pretest-posttest method with a knowledge questionnaire, supported by question and answer sessions and direct explanations from the community service team.  Results: The evaluation of the results showed a significant increase in the average knowledge of the participants from a score of 62.43 (pretest) to 82.57 (posttest), as indicated by an average increase in knowledge scores of 20.14 points (p = <0.001; Wilcoxon test).

Abstract

Background: Hypertension remains one of the most common health problems experienced by the community and can increase the risk of complications if not managed properly. The low ability of patients to self-care makes blood pressure difficult to control. This community service activity aims to improve the self-management skills of hypertensive patients through self-management education using audiovisual media. Methods: The activity was conducted in the form of counselling and self-management practice for 52 hypertensive patients in Girilayu Village, Matesih Subdistrict, Karanganyar Regency. The activity partners were the Girilayu Village community with assistance from local health workers. Education was provided door-to-door using educational videos, leaflets, and interactive discussions. Evaluation was conducted by measuring self-care abilities and blood pressure before and after the activity. Results: The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' self-care abilities from moderate to high, with an average increase of 25–30%, as well as a decrease in mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure of around 5–7% after education. This improvement illustrates an increase in participants' hard skills in managing hypertension and soft skills in the form of independence and adherence to a healthy lifestyle. Conclusion: This activity had a positive impact on improving the health status of the community and has the potential to be implemented in other areas with similar problems. It is recommended that similar activities be carried out continuously and developed into applied service programmes in the field of chronic diseases.

Abstract

Background: The main problem in this community service programme is the low level of knowledge among pregnant women regarding nutrition in efforts to prevent stunting in the Cepogo Community Health Centre working area, particularly in three villages with high stunting rates in Boyolali Regency. The aim of the activity is to increase the nutritional knowledge of pregnant women so that they are able to effectively prevent stunting through education using flipcharts. Methods: The methods used included counseling with flipcharts and leaflets for 31 primigravida pregnant women. Participants were selected using purposive sampling according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The activity was carried out through door-to-door socialisation, pre-tests and post-tests to measure knowledge before and after education, and evaluation using a Guttman scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Results: The results showed a significant increase in the knowledge of pregnant women; before the activity, 77.4% of participants had poor knowledge, but after education using flipcharts, there was an increase to 77.4% of participants in the good category based on the post-test results. The p-value in the Wilcoxon test showed significance (p=<0.001), meaning that there was an increase in hard skills knowledge, with 87.1% of participants experiencing an increase in individual scores. Conclusion: The education programme proved to be effective in increasing nutritional knowledge, which is an important asset for the prevention of stunting in the community. Health and education agencies continue to conduct regular nutritional counselling for pregnant women.

Abstract

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a common health problem among the elderly, often interfering with daily activities and reducing quality of life. Aging affects the spine’s structure and function, increasing the risk of LBP. Non-pharmacological interventions such as core stability exercises have shown potential in reducing pain and improving function. This training program improved the knowledge and skills of both health cadres and older adults, making it a useful non-pharmacological therapy to enhance quality of life. Methods: This community service program was conducted in Tohudan Village, Karanganyar, Central Java, from February to July 2023, involving elderly individuals experiencing LBP and local health cadres. The intervention included educational sessions, training in core stability exercises, and evaluations of participants’ knowledge and skills. The exercises taught included diaphragmatic breathing, raising limbs, bridging, and quadruped positions. The evaluation was conducted through structured qualitative interviews with participants and cadres. Results: The program showed positive outcomes, with increased understanding and skill among health cadres and elderly participants in performing core stability exercises. Interviews with participants and cadres supported these findings—participants reported reduced pain and improved ability to perform daily activities after regular exercise, while cadres felt more confident in guiding others to perform correctly and maintaining programme continuity. Conclusion: Core stability exercise is an effective non-pharmacological intervention to reduce low back pain and improve the quality of life among the elderly. Training community health cadres ensures sustainable impact, enabling continued support for elderly individuals suffering from LBP. Further referrals to health facilities are recommended if symptoms persist.

Abstract

Background: School-aged children's knowledge of the correct way to wear masks is still low during the new normal era, which increases the risk of COVID-19 spread in the school environment. Objective: To improve school-aged children's understanding and skills in using masks through community service activities. Methods: The service activity was conducted using a method of counselling and practice at SD Negeri 4 Ngunut, Bandar, Pacitan. The number of partners is 34 students from grades 3, 4, and 5, who were randomly selected. Evaluation was conducted using pre-tests and post-tests with questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability, as well as behavioural observation of mask usage. Results: There was an 86.5% increase in participants' knowledge, as evidenced by an increase in the average score from 1.09 (pre-test) to 2.03 (post-test). This increase indicates a significant behavioural change in the correct use of masks, potentially reducing the risk of disease transmission. Conclusion: This community service successfully improved soft skills such as understanding health protocols and hard skills in the correct use of masks among school children. This interactive service program needs to be continued and developed to maintain the sustainability of health protocol adaptation in the educational environment.
