Abstract

Background: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are one of the main health challenges in Indonesia, especially for the elderly. To reduce the risk of NCDs, prevention efforts are needed through education and implementing a healthy lifestyle. The CERDIK program (regular health checks, get rid of cigarette smoke, be diligent in physical activity, have a healthy and balanced diet, get enough rest, manage stress) is an effective approach in supporting the prevention of NCDs. This outreach activity was carried out at Posyandu Kemuning RT 01 RW 08 Made Village with the aim of increasing the understanding and awareness of the elderly regarding the prevention of NCDs. Methods: This activity included interactive education, practical simulations, group discussions, and simple health checks. The activity was attended by the elderly from RT 01 RW 08 and involved posyandu cadres and village midwives. The community service activities were carried out in four stages, namely preparation, implementation of socialisation, mentoring and evaluation, and follow-up. Results: This activity showed an increase in participant knowledge, participant understanding in doing simple physical activities, and understanding of the importance of healthy eating and exercising. The mentoring and education program provided showed an average increase in scores of 42.4% in three main aspects: knowledge, understanding of physical activity, and motivation for healthy living. Conclusion: This activity emphasizes the importance of a community-based approach to support the sustainability of a healthy lifestyle. With ongoing mentoring and education, it is hoped that this program can have a long-term impact in reducing the prevalence of NCDs in the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Efforts to protect the surrounding environment must start by oneself by doing small things. Education to students regarding environmental problems caused by landfills is needed to raise students' awareness so that they care more about the surrounding environment. Active participation of students can be carried out in the culture of disposing of waste in the appropriate place and according to the type of waste. This activity aims to increase environmental knowledge and awareness among children through video animation-based waste management education at the At-Taqwa Bulakan landfill. Methods: This community service activity utilised a pre-post test design to evaluate knowledge improvement. The target participants were students in grades 3–6 of elementary schools. Participants were selected using saturated sampling based on inclusion criteria, resulting in 18 children participating in the activity. Results: The results showed that there was an increase in participants' knowledge before being given the counseling with a p value of 0.032. The mean pre-test score of participants was 66.11 (SD 4.26) and the mean post-test score was 74.44 (SD 4.99). Conclusion: Counseling using animated video-based learning methods can be considered successful in increasing understanding and skills about the importance of maintaining the surrounding environment free from rubbish for children. Animated videos are recommended as an effective environmental education medium and should be integrated into children's education programmes to shape waste-conscious behaviour.

Abstract

Background: Anemia remains a significant public health issue among adolescent girls in Samarinda, with a reported prevalence of 20.3%. The condition, often linked to iron deficiency, poses risks to physical development, cognitive performance, and overall well-being. Contributing factors include unbalanced dietary habits, menstruation, parasitic infections, and low awareness of nutritional needs. This activity aims to enhance the capacity of adolescents to prevent anemia through participatory and sustainable nutrition campaigns and healthy lifestyle practices. Methods: This community service initiative was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 and SMA Negeri 10 Samarinda from November 15-21, 2024, involving 40 female students. A participatory and educational approach was employed, including group discussions, health counseling, and the use of visual educational media such as booklets and PowerPoint presentations. Pre- and post-tests were administered to evaluate changes in knowledge. Results: The participants, predominantly aged 16 years, showed low baseline awareness about anemia. The intervention led to a 22% increase in knowledge regarding the causes, symptoms, and prevention of anemia. Interactive discussions and visual media effectively engaged students, promoting better understanding and proactive attitudes toward healthy lifestyles and iron intake. Conclusion: A participatory and visual-based approach is effective in promoting health knowledge and behavior change among adolescents, with potential long-term benefits for school and community health. Recommended activities include interactive nutrition education sessions, visual media campaigns, peer-led discussions, and community-based monitoring to sustain behavior change.

Abstract

Background: Diarrhea remains one of the leading causes of death in children, making prevention and control efforts crucial. Health education, using media such as leaflets and audio-visual tools, plays a vital role in raising awareness. This activity aims to implement a school-based community service programme and evaluate the improvement in knowledge and attitudes towards diarrhoea prevention among fifth-grade students at SDN Temboro 1 after audiovisual-based health education. Methods: This school-based PkM programme presented audiovisual modules on diarrhoea prevention to 36 fifth-grade students and conducted pre- and post-tests to monitor their learning outcomes. Knowledge was measured using a structured questionnaire (multiple choice/true-false), and attitudes were measured using a 4-point Likert scale; both were administered immediately before and after the session. Results: Pre- and post-monitoring showed improvement in both approaches; the audiovisual group recorded an average knowledge score of 70.89 and an attitude score of 66.33 after the session. These findings confirm that audiovisual education is more effective in optimising understanding and attitudes towards diarrhoea prevention in the context of school-based PkM. Conclusion: Audio-visual health education proves to be an effective method in enhancing both knowledge and attitudes toward diarrhea prevention in elementary school students.

Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia has not yet reached 100%. One effective strategy to support successful breastfeeding is by educating mothers on how to express breast milk. Educating mothers on this practice is crucial to enhancing their knowledge and supporting the success of exclusive breastfeeding. This activity aims to implement a breast milk expression education programme for postpartum mothers at the Gantiwarno Community Health Centre and to monitor changes in knowledge through pre- and post-session. Methods: This community service was conducted in the working area of the Gantiwarno Community Health Centre, Klaten, in October 2022, targeting 23 postpartum mothers who were selected purposively. The intervention took the form of approximately 20 minutes of education on expressing breast milk using leaflets, preceded by a pre-test and followed by a post-test immediately after the session. Knowledge was measured using a structured questionnaire, and changes in pairs were analysed using the Wilcoxon test (α=0.05) after obtaining consent to participate. Results: The majority of participants were aged 20–35 years (73.9%), had a high school education (69.6%), were not formally employed (65.2%), and were multiparous (69.6%). Before the session, knowledge was predominantly in the ‘fair’ category (60.9%); after education, the ‘good’ category increased to 39.1%. Paired analysis showed a significant increase (p=0.03). Conclusion: Education on expressing breast milk positively affected the knowledge of postpartum mothers at the Gantiwarno Health Center. Therefore, it is important to provide such education to improve maternal knowledge, which can contribute to achieving the goal of exclusive breastfeeding.
