Abstract

Due to the abstract nature of Arabic grammar and the lack of engaging classroom resources, students often struggle to understand kāna wa akhwātuhā material. To enhance students' understanding of the subject, this study aims to develop and evaluate the viability and effectiveness of UNO-based learning materials. The R&D methodology for this study used the ADDIE model, which comprises the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Students from MAN 20 Jakarta carried out the study. Questionnaires, expert validation sheets, and pre- and post-test instruments were used for data collection. Expert validation and positive student responses, both classified as very achievable, indicate that the developed media are very achievable. In addition, the performance test shows a high N-Gain and increased average scores, indicating a significant improvement in student achievement. This study focuses on the teaching of kāna wa akhwātuhā and progresses towards the production of game-based Arabic grammar teaching material. UNO cards are an alternative learning tool that can help create a more dynamic, engaging, and student-centered learning environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze research trends in the development of communicative Arabic teaching materials integrated with digital technology. The review also examines how QR Code technology and gamification have been incorporated within this broader development trend. The method used is Systematic Literature Review with reference to the PRISMA procedure which includes the identification, selection, eligibility, and inclusion stages. The data source was obtained through national and international scientific articles published in the 2022–2026 range and according to the topics of communicative teaching materials, digital technology-based learning, and gamification of Arabic language learning. The results of the study have shown the development of Arabic teaching materials still tends to lead to the integration of digital technology to increase interactivity and student involvement. In addition, a communicative approach has proven to be an important foundation in supporting the mastery of Arabic language skills in a contextual manner. Furthermore, the application of gamification, especially through educational games such as monopoly, shows significant potential in increasing learning motivation and active participation of students. However, there are still research gaps related to the simultaneous integration of communicative teaching materials, QR Code technology, and monopoly games in one complete learning design. Therefore, this research provides important implications as a conceptual basis in the development of innovative Arabic teaching materials that are able to integrate communicative approaches, digital technology, and gamification to improve the quality of Arabic language learning.

Abstract

This study evaluates the universality claim of Noam Chomsky’s generative grammar by examining its applicability to Arabic, particularly the syntactic structures of the Qur’an, in comparison with Arabic syntax. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach, it analyzes three purposively selected verses QS. Al-Fātiḥah [1]: 5, QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 286, and QS. Al-Ḥijr [15]: 9 representing object fronting (taqdīm wa ta’khīr), negation-restriction, and tawkīd (emphasis). The analysis involves deep and surface structure identification, transformational analysis, Arabic syntax based interpretation, and comparative evaluation. Furthermore, each verse is examined not only from the perspective of transformational syntax but also through the interpretative principles of classical Arabic grammar, allowing a more comprehensive understanding of how syntactic structures interact with semantic and rhetorical functions in Qur’anic discourse. This comparative perspective enables the study to identify the strengths and limitations of both linguistic traditions in explaining the complexity of Arabic syntax. The findings show that generative grammar effectively explains formal mechanisms such as movement and insertion but remains limited in addressing the semantic and rhetorical dimensions of Arabic, especially in Qur’anic discourse. In contrast, Arabic syntax provides a more integrative account of structure and meaning by considering grammatical, contextual, and communicative aspects simultaneously. The study concludes that the universality claim of generative grammar is only partially valid, thus requiring an integrative framework combining formal and functional approaches. Such a framework is expected to provide a more balanced and comprehensive explanation of Arabic syntax, particularly for texts with rich linguistic, stylistic, and rhetorical characteristics such as the Qur’an.

Abstract

This article examines women’s discourse in Nawāl as-Saʿdāwī’s Al-Ḥubb fī Zamān al-Naft through corpus linguistics-based literary research and Qāsim Amīn’s reformist perspective. The study responds to the limited integration of corpus evidence, textual quotation analysis, and Islamic reformist thought in Arabic literary criticism. It applies to an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design: the first stage produces quantitative corpus evidence, while the second stage provides qualitative interpretation through selected quotations from the novel. The corpus consists of 28,419 tokens and 9,327 types, with a vocabulary density of 0.328, a readability index of 9.818, and a mean sentence length of 29.1 words. Sixty-one quotations were selected through purposive sampling and categorized into six thematic fields. The findings show that women’s discourse is constructed through profession and work, education, hijab, marriage, divorce, and socio-political participation. Profession and work form the dominant discourse with 33 quotations or 54.1%, followed by education and hijab with 10 quotations or 16.4% each, marriage with 5 quotations or 8.2%, divorce with 2 quotations or 3.3%, and socio-political participation with 1 quotation or 1.6%. Close reading of Arabic quotations shows that women are represented as rational, speaking, working, educated, and socially negotiated subjects. The study contributes to Arabic literary studies by demonstrating how corpus-based thematic distribution can guide Qāsim Amīn-based interpretation of women’s discourse in modern Arabic fiction.

Abstract

This study extends multimodal discourse analysis by demonstrating how Arabic verbal texts and visual grammar jointly construct ideological representations in extremist propaganda posters. In particular, this article examines the verbal and non-verbal (visual) dimensions of the posters disseminated by the Islamic State (ISIS) through internet media, including Twitter, Facebook, Telegram, and YouTube. The data comprise posters released by the Islamic State and its affiliated organizations that circulate in cyberspace and are limited to Arabic-language posters. To uncover the dimensions of radicalism embedded in these posters, the study employs van Leeuwen’s multimodal analysis, treating each poster as a discourse approached through the perspectives of communicative events and the order of discourse. The analysis concludes that the propaganda posters employ a range of textual features, including the use of fi’l amr (imperative verbs), emphatic constructions, jumlah ismiyyah (nominal sentences), and jumlah fi’liyyah (verbal sentences). These propaganda posters are produced not only by the Islamic State itself but also by affiliated organizations such as al-Abd al-Faqir, al-Bawaba, and al-Furqan, with social media users as their intended audience both followers and the individuals or parties targeted by the propaganda. Through its posters, the Islamic State attempts to call for jihad, strengthen its existence, and spread terror among others.
